I finished all the grading! I woke up really early and just read all the rest of history papers and them used Excel for all the grading formulas and then put them into the system and I was done! Yay, for no more grading until September.

Two of my students plagiarized in their term Research Paper which was worth 35% of the grade. One guy, who was writing a paper on Plato, started taking about Plato and More and it was so clear than I had to google it. After I sent him an email telling him that because of plagiarism (and explaining that I used Google to catch it) he would fail the paper and the class, he responded back that he didn’t do this and he wanted to meet me and show his notes and he didn’t go near the internet. I pointed out that I have a specific website (I’m thinking he got someone else to write the paper for him or something) but I could always submit his paper to Academic Honesty Committee and let them decide. He emails back a minute later willing to just let it go “what’s done is done.” That amused me to no end.

Another student’s paper was pretty crappy, C level paper and I was ready to give him that C but then on the second to last page, he left one of the sentences he copied from the internet highlighted. Yes, he was that stupid. So, of course, I googled it too. He didn’t deny the plagiarism but has been begging me for a D, in numerous emails – have some dignity and admit responsibility there, kid.

I needed to grade history papers today, but I didn’t do much, mostly because I was recovering from all that grading yesterday for my folder review. So some time off is totally justified.

May 14: My semester is finally over so I can catch up here. I will try to keep most of it off the Reading page so not to spam anyone. It is really nice not to be grading anymore!

I signed up for R/S Firsts Fest, knowing that by end of the semester I won’t have time. But I could write a very very short story. So I did just in time for a deadline today. And I got Bear to beta it since it was such last notice. How much do I love my fiancée for his willingness to read my slash stories!

Mama and I went to Brooklyn to do my wedding hair trial. Yeva recommended the hairdresser so off we went. And I did like the style and her and the hair did hold all day. Lots and lots of pins in my hair. So although it would involve a lot of traveling on the day of, I will do my hair with her.

Mama and I went looking for a hairdresser for the wedding hair today and we tried someone close to home. It was a tactical mistake on my part of not bringing a book. So I pretty much sat there looking at magazines (and the wedding magazines are ridiculous – who actually spends 30 hours a week planning a weeding – there isn’t that much to plan). Feels like wasted hours too, since my Mom’s hair style didn’t really hold that long and she doesn’t like it – so we’ll keep shopping. I’ll call the hairdresser Yeva recommended and do a trial with her; she is supposed to be great at styling hair.

I need to pick up cross stitch again – I haven’t done it in so long but I really want to get back into it.

Today the weather was so nice and so summery that I just wanted to go rollerblading for the first time this year. My parents did not want to drive to the beach, they were too busy watching a movie so I walked to elementary school about 20 minutes away to try the parking lot there. That didn’t turn out to be practical since there was baseball and just not good surface so I did go one the nice paved sidewalk beside the school – even going down a hill at one point which made me nervous. I also rollerbladed home despite the ridiculous sidewalks. Yeah, the beach area is the best for this.

I watched “Swimsuit Issue” on Netflix. It is a Swedish movie Netflix recommended about a father and daughter story. I liked it; it was very sweet. That is why I don’t even miss having DVDs come to the house or rarely watch regular movies anymore. When I need a movie fix, I go for unusual on Netflix.

Today was Easter, which we celebrated in a pretty low key way with Bear’s family. There are no small children, so I heard a lot of stories of finding baskets from Bear’s childhood, but there are not really those traditions around. We just pretty much went to his Grandma’s nursing home and played card games while watching a religious channel with the surprisingly interesting biography of an Archbishop. And we all had Easter dinner at Bear’s house in the evening.

I did finish watching the episode of Grimm with the bird egg, which I liked as usual, especially the look on Nick’s face when he realizes he sees a creature on vacation (“not again” look).

The best part, though, was going to see Titanic in the evening to get out of the house and also to see the movie. Bear had never seen it on the big screen and he surprisingly agreed to go when I asked him and I haven’t seen it in a while. When the movie originally came out, I was 17 and seen it during opening weekend, before there was even hype. And it still holds the record for the movie I’ve seen most often on the big screen. I’ve seen it three times during the original run, although the last time, I sort of snuck in after watching another movie. And watching it today reminded me why I loved it so much. (“Dirty Dancing” is still my favorite movie, but I do really like this one.) Bear had only seen it once - when we were eighteen and just started dating and he was, of course, game for anything I wanted to watch.

“Titanic” It is even better in 3D – I could see the details of the dresses and it felt even more visceral. This was actually the first time I’ve seen a movie in 3D where I felt the 3D truly added something and was so not just there. Now, Leo is not my type, so it was never about the love story for me, not even when I was 17. Besides, it is only love story because he dies – so she elevated her rebellion fling to something grander. The story for me was always about Rose and her finding herself and finding her own path. So the scene I get teary at, every time I watch this movie is the photograph scene at the end where we see her full and happy life.

After trying to do anything on my Sony again and failing, I just sat down and ordered a new laptop. I’m getting a Toshiba this time and I went for $450 one, which less memory – since it is still a lot more memory than I ever use and I will spend $150 less than the other version I was looking at. And since computers now have a tendency to break so much faster, I feel good about that decision. I hate doing this – I really could have spent that money on something else. I also decided to spend $100, get a new LCD screen online and follow those YouTube videos that show how to replace your screen. That way maybe my Sony can get more use and I’ll have a backup laptop or something. I can’t risk just fixing it first; I do need a laptop now, especially since I need my Powerpoints and lecture material when I teach. And I don’t like being in front of the main house computer, on a chair. (I like to sit on the bed and use my laptop). I really, really hate this whole situation.. Anyway, this is my new laptop .

In the afternoon, I went for a walk and bought a few lottery tickets since the lottery is so ridiculously high right now. I obviously didn’t win, I just matched two numbers. But it is fun to be part of the craze sometimes.

Folder review was today – My director actually complimented to me several times that I was doing a great job (and she heard before that I was good) - which is always great to hear. I didn’t actually finish grading all of the papers, so I’m not always that great – I just presented those I had concern about. I did finish all the midterms for Writing class last night and I did get up at 6 to grade papers. But I will need to grade more over Spring Break together with history midterms for two classes and one response paper. Grading doesn’t end. On better news: Spring Break – no teaching next week. Yay. And I’m happy Folder Review is done. Those matter in future hiring decisions.

We went to Costco afterward and I got bottles of wine for Passover – that is coming up in a month already. How are we a third way into March already?

I found the best way to sit and fold and stuff all the invitations. I put episodes of “Angel” and “Buffy” to watch on the laptop and then just folded. We actually have three extra invites, which was unexpected. Oh, the “Angel” episode was the one about the stalker guy whose eye and hands could separate from his body and it is one of the creepiest. It is even creepier the second time.

It is my favorite day of the week this semester. Mostly because I use it to decompress after a long week. I did mark the Response Papers for Global but in general I take it pretty easy, especially after a long grading day like I had yesterday. Yay, Friday.

Bear picked the invitation style online. So we are going to order them tomorrow.

Long day, as usual. I was going to grade in the evening, but after so much teaching and prepping to teach, and office hours, and reading some rough drafts and basically working from 7am to 6pm, I just have no energy. So I caught up to blogging instead and I’m going to read a little more.

I gave a lecture on Mughal Empire in my Global History class. The Department Chair emailed me last week asking if she could come observe me teach, which was not really a question. This is the first time I was observed teaching in years and years, and certainly the first time since I started teaching at Local College a year ago. I also knew very little about Mughal Empire until last week, when I started working on the lecture. But I think the lecture went very well. I did background for India, Babur and Akbar. There was Powerpoint, a video clip for students to watch and the discussion of two primary sources. So good variety. It is not like I was teaching differently or anything – I’m pretty set in my methods. And I don’t really get nervous teaching but I was a little more hyperaware because the Chair was sitting there. And this is my favorite class this semester, which I really did not expect.

So I did order that summer type white dress from that Chinese website. We’ll see what happens. I have no expectations whatsoever.

I didn’t want to watch “House” today. Too tired. So I didn’t. I’ll just catch up to it in a few weeks. I used to look forward to it so much but not lately. And there is only half a season left. I also don’t want to watch “HIMYM” anymore. I think “Glee”, “Grimm,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Modern Family” are the only full season shows I’m interested in anymore. The rest are seasonal.

“Story of India” is a very nice BBC series recounting India from 2,000 BCE to the present. I watched Part 5 in preparation of Monday’s class on the Mughal Empire since I want to show them some clips. (It’s on Netlfix Instant and YouTube). It was pretty interesting.

I also went to the bank and to the store to get a Valentine’s Card for Bear. We don’t really do anything other than exchange cards. I did spend almost 30 minutes picking one out rolling my eyes at stupidity of Valentine’s Day Cards. Oh, the sentiments. No, I don’t need anyone to ‘complete’ me whatever that even means.

Yep, I have a cold. Mostly a terrible sore throat. It is not very comfortable. Which is probably why I woke up at 7:30 even when I couldn’t fall asleep last night until pretty late. Lots of tea and throat candy for me. I hope that I can actually handle 4 and a half hours of class on Monday and my voice won’t go to hell.

On a better note the new Leonard Cohen CD came and the two Sandman comics. Leonard Cohen CD is so good. So good. And the booklet has lyrics – such poetry. His songs gain more meaning the more one listens to them. I have a feeling this CD will be on my rotation over and over for a while.

Question: does anyone know how I can take a PDF of a book (one of Google e-books) and make a PDF of only the first 43 pages? I tried converting to Mobi format through Calibre but the conversion didn’t work well.

Is Gingrich seriously think that if he points out that Romney speaks French it is some sort of bad thing? Wow. That is sad.

An interesting article on teaching kids about gender and how to appreciate the difference in people.

Local College is making all employees to do online sexual harassment seminar and a one on sexual abuse. I think this is partly a response to recent events. A lot of legalese. This online thing also gives very specific legal definitions like when the institution is liable. Mostly this seminar is for institution to avoid liability by ‘education.’ But I think it is useful overall. I’m just glad I can do this online and not attend a class on it. A lot is common sense, like don’t make advances on anyone especially students or others, especially if you are in a power position. No kidding.

I did like some of the questions we had to answer to test our understanding. Basically, it is report everything if there is any problem and be extra cautious. Some examples after a cut.

sample questions )

The sexual abuse online seminar was a bit boring since it was mostly listening to computer reading aloud what is written on a page- I would rather just read. It would be faster and I would have tuned in to more information, although there was nothing surprising or new. Just how to read the signs and the obligation to report it.

Grimm S1E8 ) I love this show more and more with every episode.

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope the New Year will bring only good things.

I’m back to posting and being back online consistently – it was nice to take a short break although I did still check email and watched videos online. I also just caught up to posting the last week on my journal. I didn’t want to overwhelm anyone’s reading pages so I posted them just on my journal, in case anyone wants to read it.

But here is a short summary of my Christmas/New Year/holiday week: I had a very nice Christmas with Bear’s family where I got four books among my presents (yay), including Stephen Fry’s latest autobiography, and a pocket watch so I could pretend to be in Doctor Who universe. Then Bear and I went to Montauk for a nice relaxing vacation with hiking every morning and even time at a spa! And in the middle of this vacation on a beautiful Waking Dunes hike, Bear proposed with a lovely ring, which I thought was just perfect for me. It has an art deco design on the sides. So I got to be a bit giddy and girly.

2011 A Year in Review in a list )

Today itself was a low key day. While Bear set up his laptop in my room and was doing some work I read Karen Armstrong’s article “Homo religiosus” which I will teach next semester. I do love her stuff but she is dense and complex. The students will certainly be challenged.

I did go outside to go to the bank with Bear but otherwise I stayed home and read.

Of course, in the evening I had to get ready for our holiday celebration. It was just my parents and Bear but since it is New Year, we all dressed up – with yellow and orange themes since next year is the year of the Dragon. So I’m wearing an orange shirt I got for my birthday, a black skirt and stockings with make-up and everything. I look more like a tiger. Mama made a delicious table of holiday food including a chicken and we took our annual holiday photos with the tree.

I hope 2012 will be a good year. That is the best part about the New Year celebration a hope of a new beginning.

I’m so so happy today is done. I still have history final exams to finish this weekend, but those I just have to read and grade, no need for commenting. I got up at 6am to get to campus and pretty much graded non-stop from 7 to 2, with a break for Folder review with the program director. I got 18 papers done – which is a lot. On a marathon day 16-18 is the most a brain can process and only under duress. I graded maybe 80 papers this week – I bought a new pen on Monday and it is almost done.

The folder review itself was fine. I was very happy with the grade distribution for my students and got the director to agree to an A for one of the guys even as this last paper since needed a little bit more. But he had a great complex thesis. And he came to pick up his folder and I love seeing the joy in these kids faces when they see they did well or even passed. One guy was taking this class for the third time and was thrilled with a C+. (It is a requirement). I had lovely students in both my sections this semester – definitely one of my favorite semesters.

After the folder review I went to the main campus to pick up the textbook for next semester and filled out all the paperwork too. Then tea and jelly thing at DunkinDonuts and some relaxation.

And to make me even happier, on top of being done with writing stuff for the semester, I got the most awesome story as my gift at RS Small Gifts exchange. It has Teddy! And it is just perfect. Thank you [personal profile] deathjunke!

I’ve had a ridiculous amount of déjà vu today from teaching and music and conversations to story reading. Even stuff I know I never read before. This is really weird. Three, four times today at least.

Turns out there is a new edition of Expos book this year! Good thing it came to my attention today. I basically figured out my readings from next semester after I borrowed the department’s book. I need to make my way to the main campus next Friday and pick up a copy for myself. I think I will start with Carr article on how Google is making us stupid – something for students to respond to.

Since my writing students started their day one of two of their final exam, I just graded history papers at that time. I caught some plagiarism in one paragraph and borrowed an iPhone from one of the students. And it was Wikipedia. Sigh.

After office hours, I made my way to the other campus, got tea and a Boston crème donut and caught up on some TV on the computer. Why did TNT and USA no longer want me to watch either “Leverage” nor “Burn Notice” online? That just seems so wrong.

I graded the remainder of Final Paper 3 this morning. Paper four will be for next week. Since the class did Peer Review I did not have much to do in class. I talked to some about their papers but mostly I just read my own stuff. This is rare for me, usually I do actual work, but it was their last day before Thanksgiving break (due to weird schedule next week) so they were fine with it.

I got home earlier since my parents had a concert to go to.

Eastenders singing Queen for Children in Need was a lot of fun. YouTube rocks sometimes. And now I got "Radio Ga Ga" stuck in my head and want to get a Queen album.
And I liked the Doctor Who Christmas trailer which premiered today too. They are doing “Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe” this year. Should be fun. Just the Doctor, no companions suits me just fine.

11/11/11 and Veteran’s Day. My students did not know why Veteran’s Day was on this day which is a little sad but not unexpected.

I had a really busy day, working non-stop from 7am to 3pm. I finished grading one of my sections. And I had full office hours since seven people showed up. This usually happens for Papers 4 or 5 and I do like seeing then try. After 3pm I took a bus to the campus where Papa picks me up and caught up on some Thursday TV and internet. My brain was a bit shot from this week.

Speaking of TV: What is going on in the soap world today – Syed is crying and Chrolli are both crying – it is like they planned to make all storylines extra miserable with too much drama. I know everything should be fine by Christmas but this is soap world so drama is great but both at the same time is a little depressing. I want happy boys.
