Happy New Year to everyone! I hope the New Year will bring only good things.

I’m back to posting and being back online consistently – it was nice to take a short break although I did still check email and watched videos online. I also just caught up to posting the last week on my journal. I didn’t want to overwhelm anyone’s reading pages so I posted them just on my journal, in case anyone wants to read it.

But here is a short summary of my Christmas/New Year/holiday week: I had a very nice Christmas with Bear’s family where I got four books among my presents (yay), including Stephen Fry’s latest autobiography, and a pocket watch so I could pretend to be in Doctor Who universe. Then Bear and I went to Montauk for a nice relaxing vacation with hiking every morning and even time at a spa! And in the middle of this vacation on a beautiful Waking Dunes hike, Bear proposed with a lovely ring, which I thought was just perfect for me. It has an art deco design on the sides. So I got to be a bit giddy and girly.

2011 A Year in Review in a list )

Today itself was a low key day. While Bear set up his laptop in my room and was doing some work I read Karen Armstrong’s article “Homo religiosus” which I will teach next semester. I do love her stuff but she is dense and complex. The students will certainly be challenged.

I did go outside to go to the bank with Bear but otherwise I stayed home and read.

Of course, in the evening I had to get ready for our holiday celebration. It was just my parents and Bear but since it is New Year, we all dressed up – with yellow and orange themes since next year is the year of the Dragon. So I’m wearing an orange shirt I got for my birthday, a black skirt and stockings with make-up and everything. I look more like a tiger. Mama made a delicious table of holiday food including a chicken and we took our annual holiday photos with the tree.

I hope 2012 will be a good year. That is the best part about the New Year celebration a hope of a new beginning.

Another lovely summer day. I went for a walk to the bank around noon and I did an extra block loop since I didn’t want to go inside and just wanted to enjoy the sunshine. This weather certainly contributes to my good mood. And I got a little tan reading on the balcony again this afternoon.

In honor of summer, I painted my toe nails red. I’m not a girly girl, really – I don’t really wear make-up or bother much about my hair or care for shopping (shoes and clothes shopping bore me) but I love painting my toes nails especially in the summer for the sandals. That and summer t-shirts and tops make me a happy girl.

Last night I figured out why I prefer regular books to Kindle and why that is unlikely to change. Now, I don’t mind the Kindle, it is certainly easy to handle and fine for the eyes and I read lots of things on the computer (like fanfic) so it is not new technology but I can’t skim ahead with Kindle. The way I read, I start a book in a regular way and at some point I skim ahead a few chapters just to see what happens and then I go back and read it slowly. There are occasions when I restrain myself like with the last Harry Potter book when I peaked ahead just once. With Kindle I can’t really do that. And also while I can see on the bottom just much of the book I read and how much I still have to read, I really would like to see it physically. I have no actually sense of the book.

Cross-stitch: I’m done! I was cross-stitching for two hours this evening with TV on and I finished all the dark grey backstitch. I used every single thread of this color too. But since the little bear’s eyes also needed this color I did have to pull out my box of thread. And then I figured I just have stem-stitch (green for balloon strings) and French knots (eye sparkle and cuffs), so I might as well just get it done. It took another hour. I never done stem stitch before so that was interesting but I got a handle on it pretty quickly. And then I just did my cross-stitch signature and I was done. The baby is due any day so I made it on time. I do still have to wash it and make the backing for it and buy the fabric for that but the cross stitching portion of it is done. I started this on January 1 but almost half was done this month. Yay, I'm done

Here is the picture of it:

I feel like I’m in the zen state today since I don’t really interact with people all day since I’m working from home and I have a house to myself. I did talk to Bear and then Papa on the phone today but for the most day I exist in my head. It is nice in a way but a little weird – it really has been awhile.

It is finally summer. It is warm and I can wear my summer shirts. I can get a little tan. I sat on the balcony in late afternoon reading “Hunger Games” and it was so nice to feel the sun and warm wind. I smell of summer now and I love the heat and the sun.

“Borgias” keeps being excellent. It is not as great as “Rome” was but it is very good. I love the characters.

Cross-stitch: backstitch of middle bear, balloons, and big bear’s head. Not long now.

Weather continues to be gloomy. I’m a bit melancholy today, maybe because of it. Also it has been a while since I was home by myself. I no longer have anxiety issues of three years ago and I do look forward to the next two weeks alone in the house but it is just weird. Bear left around 3 today and he will be back here in a week. So it is just me and dissertation. And I need to finish my cross stitching. I just could not get into it today.

I watched the fourth episode of “Borgias” with dinner. That show continues to be awesome. I like it a lot.

As I got up this morning, first thing I did was book the vacation Bear and I have been talking about for the last month. Orlando and Harry Potter World here we go. I’ve never been to Orlando and I’m looking forward to Disneyworld too; I did want to go ever since I was eight and read the first Mickey Mouse book. So in one month I will finally get to see it and be a kid for a bit.

This evening I also watched “Borgias” (I do love having on Demand): the rest of the first two-parter and Episode 3. I like it a lot and can’t wait to see the rest of the season. All that scheming. And I’m enjoying the characters. I do prefer it to “Game of Thrones.” I’m really liking Cesare, which is unexpected.

When will this rain stop. It is making everything so depressing.

Cross stitch: with yellow and gold for the balloon I finished all the cross stitches for the blanket. Now I just have to do backstitch, stem stitch and French knots and signature and I’m done. I’m thinking of adding the baby’s name somewhere too.

I’m too stressed to sleep lately. Last night my brain refused to work after 11pm and I recognize the need to go to bed, but then I still couldn’t fall asleep for a while. Normally, I’m pretty good about sleep, it takes me a very short time to fall asleep but in the last few weeks I’ve been waking up early and it takes me awhile to fall asleep. This morning I woke up at 5 something, gave up being asleep at 5:40 and graded papers instead. I finished one class but not the second class so for them I postponed the deadline for Paper 5. Having teacherly powers of extensions is great sometimes.

Class itself went fine – the students didn’t mind the extension and we worked on thesis and how to make sure that when they give a quote, they explain it in context.

I got a bagel between classes and after classes I returned the library book and paid $5 late fee. At least it is not $62. But now I’m tempted to use that money to get “Farscape: Compete Series” on Amazon since they are selling it for ridiculously cheap price of $59.

Then for the late afternoon my brain refused to work again. I will try to get more sleep later.

I saw the "Borgias" trailer - I do love Jeremy Irons and I am getting geeky over this.

We went to Brooklyn for most of the day, first to visit my grandparents and then for Papa’s doctor’s appointment. Most of the afternoon, Mama and I did some errands and some grocery shopping. I got some nice veal liver. Mmm. Can’t wait to fry some up on egg and flour. We also got lunch and walked along the boardwalk while waiting for my father to finish some tests. Mama was actually pleasant most of the day, and then had to ruin it by lecturing me on my relationship with Bear. I get where she is coming from and she is my mother so of course she will butt in, but it really doesn’t help my general state of mind. End of venting.

I saw the trailer for Julie Taymor’s “Tempest” again and it looks so wonderful; I realized that it has been awhile since I read the play and I barely remember it or even most of the characters. So I decided to reread it. I have The Norton Shakespeare so first I even read the intro to the play by Stephen Greenblatt. (When I got this book in college I didn’t know who Greenblatt was, and then I read lots of his stuff in grad school). It was a good intro, it really gave good introduction to all the characters and the play itself. Usually when I read Shakespeare (and it has been awhile) I read an act a day, so today here are some thoughts on Act 1:

After Dexter there was a teaser about “Borgias,” a new Showtime series coming next year. I’m intrigued. The preview is next weekend (and because of music awards no “Brothers and Sisters” so I will try to see it). I didn’t like “Tudors” so I’m not sure about Showtime handling another historical drama but I will give it an episode. That family was insane so the possibilities for this series are fabulous. We’ll see. I’ll certainly check it out.
