I worked on my WWI lecture in the morning and I marked their Response Papers. But since it is Easter break in Local College starting tomorrow, many students went on vacation already so this lecture will have the least impact. I let them go early too – many were just mentally not there and it was tiring.

And since I knew no one would come to office hours, I hung out with Abena a bit outside in the sunshine. A little socializing is very nice and being outside is doubly good.

The computers are conspiring against me. I guess I shouldn’t name my computer prematurely after characters that die early (since I got a Toshiba this time, I wanted to name my computer Tosh, after Toshiko Sato of Torchwood. She is a computer genius and I thought it would be appropriate.) But I went to set it up, pressed the power button and the screen didn’t work. Half white with lines all over. Seriously! There is a computer conspiracy! So I went to Amazon website and ordered a replacement and then went to UPS story to send this one back. At least Amazon makes this process easy. New model should get here on Monday hopefully. I really, really hope it works this time.

After trying to do anything on my Sony again and failing, I just sat down and ordered a new laptop. I’m getting a Toshiba this time and I went for $450 one, which less memory – since it is still a lot more memory than I ever use and I will spend $150 less than the other version I was looking at. And since computers now have a tendency to break so much faster, I feel good about that decision. I hate doing this – I really could have spent that money on something else. I also decided to spend $100, get a new LCD screen online and follow those YouTube videos that show how to replace your screen. That way maybe my Sony can get more use and I’ll have a backup laptop or something. I can’t risk just fixing it first; I do need a laptop now, especially since I need my Powerpoints and lecture material when I teach. And I don’t like being in front of the main house computer, on a chair. (I like to sit on the bed and use my laptop). I really, really hate this whole situation.. Anyway, this is my new laptop .

In the afternoon, I went for a walk and bought a few lottery tickets since the lottery is so ridiculously high right now. I obviously didn’t win, I just matched two numbers. But it is fun to be part of the craze sometimes.

I had to put together the Colonialism Powerpoint in school because my laptop doesn’t want to work for longer than one hour before flickering. The LCD screen is really going. My Dad will ask around how much repair shops would charge but I think I will be buying a new laptop this weekend to my chargin. Sony definitely will not fix it for less than $500. I will not buy a Sony laptop again, that’s for sure, because three years is not long enough for this breakdown.

In much more fun news, well for me, today at Black Circle DJ Fest, my Harry Potter fic went up. It is my first story from Sirius’ perspective.

After school, we also drove to the mall so I could order Bear’s ring. There was a sale at Macy’s today that the salesperson told up last weekend about. So that is done.

My Vaio is teasing me by being fine this morning. Yesterday it was barely working. I know it won’t last but I have a very tiny, tiny bit of hope. And of course, it only worked when I was sitting in a specific position. I really can’t just hold it with my thumb on the left side of the monitor for long.

I asked Papa to do some laptop research for me because I can’t bring myself too, nor do I want to spend much time on it. When I was in Best Buy yesterday, the Toshiba looked interesting and very light, so I’ll probably get that. (I also bought a new shiny laptop bag at Best Buy, ignoring the small print that in California some chemicals that the bag is made from might cause cancer). I’ll decide next week, once Sony guy will give the call with the final verdict – he was writing a email to Sony to see if they would cover my LCD replacement (they charge $500 otherwise, which is so not worth it).

I did discover a new ice-cream flavor from Ben and Jerry that did cheer me up since it is like they were reading my mind – “Greek Frozen Yogurt Raspberry with Chocolate Chunks”. It was very delicious.

Crap! I need a new computer. It is only 3 years old and I love my Vaio – but my screen is acting up. I need to actively hold it for it to work and it would be cheaper to get a new laptop than to fix it. I hate this. I really, really do. But I can’t work on it one handed.

So I’m very frustrated and cranky today, especially as I got a Sony run around and they raised my hopes up before dashing them again. There is a small possibility that they can replace the LCD screen but I’m not sure. There was a known problem with my model involving an LCD screen and there is a warranty extension of five years to fix that. The chat person online told me my problem would be covered. But when I went to the Sony store in NJ they sent me too, the technician was not sure since that problem involves a horizontal line on the screen and not the screen freezing a whiting out. At least I know for sure it is LCD screen not the video card since the technician connect me to external monitor to check it. This whole day has been running around and trying to figure it out.

And I don’t really want to spend $600 to buy a new laptop when my hard drive works just fine. And I am really emotionally attached to my computer too, as silly as it sounds. Just a frustrating day.

I watched “Angel” and “Buffy” in the evening to make myself feel better.

I really need to get my computer checked out. I don’t want to get another one but it has been messing with me. My screen doesn’t want to stay steady – I need to hold my computer in certain positions. And it is getting worse.

I had lots of student meetings after I finished grading those last six papers. Onwards to Paper 3 grading this weekend. Today was just a long day. We did a discussion of Boyarin in class and I had better ones in the past. Matt, one of my best students, came up with the thesis of the fourth paper just after class. He and students like him give me hope. I’m throwing them an easy question for Paper 4, asking them how physical symbols matter in personal identity.
