This was a morning of chores: bank, post office, doctor’s office. My tests were fine but I need to do more since there are still some slight white cells without an infection and the doctor just wants to rule out as much as possible.

I get a house to myself again for Fourth of July long weekend. My parents left for a mini vacation in Canada (they usually like driving somewhere for 4th of July and I sometimes come along, but not this year since I just went on vacation.)

Today was our day to recover from all the park walking and just relax. We decided to do two days in parks and then a day off. So today was day off. Which included sleeping in past 9. It is relaxing and recuperating day. We spent all morning until 1:30 at the pool at the hotel. I swam a bit and tried for a tan – for some reason I’m not really tanning that much. It is weird.

I read National Geographic June issue, which I saved for this trip – there was a great article on the earliest human Temple 11,000 years ago in Turkey and ideas about the causes of Neolithic Revolution (which I should incorporate into my lecture for Global history next semester).

We went to find lunch and actually explored around the hotel area a bit – we got pizza buffet with really good desert and then we explored the gift shops – I got Mickey and Minnie pens and crayons for Alexis and Andrew and a shell owl for Marianna.

It started to rain in the evening as I walked to Dunkin Donuts to get tea and a bagel with cream cheese for dinner. I love the smell of rain on a hot day.

In the evening I went on the internet for a bit (Bear brought his netbook, but it is on public access so I’m not really logging in on anything with a password) and then I watched some TV.

I finished “Queer as Folk US” Season 2. I think I liked it better than Season One since the characters are better established. But it is a show I like but not love. I will watch other seasons and everything but it is not must watch for me.

Happy Birthday, Bear!

Bear is being a bit grumpy about his birthday so I was calling him all day with the mission to make it a fun birthday. I told him that instead of one day of celebrating he is getting a week.

For me, the day is pretty ordinary which is fine. I don’t like that I can’t just drive myself to the beach to go rollerblading and have to rely on other people who while they promised to take me this summer so I could exercise usually need to be persuaded. But I did get to go today. And today apparently was my one day a year where I fall on my bum. There are speed bumps on the beach road (I don’t know why, it is not like there are cars there) and, while I’m ok with smaller ones, there is one big one I always try to avoid by going around. Well today I overbalanced in going around and fell nicely. I did fall properly and in the sitting position but I did pull my right arm just a bit and it is never that pleasant to fall. These things happen and I just kept rollerblading, of course. As long as I don’t break anything.

I chose my prompt for RSGames today. Just like I knew it would work – one poem/song stood out and I could see the story in my head. Well, more the mood of it and that it will a contemplation piece. A journey of grieving, probably, but a hopeful one. I need to let it ruminate in my brain more. There is another Remus story that has been sitting in my head I need to write first.

RS Big Bang is really good. Really well written stories.

I’m actually doing RSGames this year: Go Team Remus! This will be the first actual fan participation with other people and not just lurking and reading everything and it is a little nerve wracking. But I am looking forward to it. Prompts are tomorrow.

I had a good birthday today. I like being 31 already.

I woke up in a really good mood today because presents! My parents told me where they put them before they left on vacation.

And I got a Kindle! Usually Papa gives me a book or two – this time 61 on Kindle! (Except I accidentally lost them when I re-registered my Kindle to my name, but then once I creates new categories I saw that they were still in memory, just not organized like Papa wanted). He got me a Kindle! I briefly suspected this a week ago in the conversation with Mama because she used the phrase “Dad’s Kindle” but then I dismissed the idea because why would Papa get me one, I never really expressed the interest or used his before the last two weeks – but he did get me one! With a pink cover with a night light. (I’m not really a pink person but it will match my laptop). And I can use it to read things like Burton’s travel accounts and his Arabian nights translation (which I already downloaded for free) and other free old books that are out of print. So I am happy to get one although I still prefer regular books.

My parents, who are awesome, also got me $25 iTunes gift certificate (Lady Gaga and SYTYCD music here I come), Mozart’s “Magic Flute” CD and “Torchwood: Children of Earth” DVD. And I got a Ralph Lauren orange t-shirt and green cargo pants.

In the afternoon, I went to the store to take a walk and also to get the Chinese menu in case I wanted Chinese tonight. And I wanted to get ice-cream too or some sort of desert. On the way I saw an ice-cream truck and I figured it was a perfect place to get ice-cream. Very summery. So I asked for a mixed cone with chocolate sprinkles. The guy asked me how I was doing as he made the cone and I was in a very good mood and I told him it was my birthday. He didn’t initially really believe me but I had my driver’s license with me so I showed it to him. He asked if I was doing anything special for it and I said not really. So he told me to put my wallet away and then he tossed the cone he was making and took the Big Gigantic Waffle Cone and not only filled it with gigantic amount of ice-cream and put sprinkles on it but also put the whipped cream on top! It was sugar overload! I don’t think I will have sugar for a while! And it just contributed to my happy mood. Thank you, Robert, the ice-cream guy for making my birthday great.

I decided on pizza in the evening and I invited my neighbor Laura and the kids over for it. Alexis came over earlier around 6 since she wanted my help with her school project. She is in the 3rd grade and was doing a project on Israel. Each kid in her class had to pick a country in Asia and research it. She already found many things. I showed her an Atlas and how to use it. Laura gave me very tasty tea and tea cups as a present. I got half cheese, half mushroom pizza, garlic knots and buffalo wings.

Then we watched SYTYCD and the Spelling Bee. Those kids always amaze me. It is insane what they can spell. It makes me love language and words even more.

And, of course, my favorite thing about today is that I get to speak to all my loved ones – family and friends who call to wish me happy birthday. Like my friend Sveta who called from across the world and my aunt.

Weird things customers say in bookstores . Really funny.

So apparently the Governor of NJ went insane and passed a law that only residents of NJ should be considered for public positions in the state. This includes Trenton employees, Rutgers University and other people who work for the public sector. Many people who work in NJ don’t live there because New York and Pennsylvania are so close. I know Rutgers negotiated with the state government to come up with some exceptions to this highly ridiculous law because, hey lots of professors want to live in New York City, but this law will affect many people. Not everyone can just move. The Governor calls this law “New Jersey First Act” and it even sounds stupid. I realize he is trying to reduce unemployment in the state but is it really feasible?

This day has been a bit weird – I was a bit lazy and I really can’t afford to be. Well, tomorrow is a new start and I’m going to make it count. A year ago I was in Minsk, visiting my family and my birth city, waiting to turn 30. And it has been an interesting year. I really like being in my 30s. This year I got to teach history again, which was unexpected and interesting and I really learned a lot about world history myself. And I started writing fanfic too. And I met interesting people online too. I had good trips to New Hampshire and Montauk. I watched and fell in love with “Highlander” and “Queer As Folk UK”. And my friends and I are really adults now, it feels like, especially with Marianna’s baby about to be born any day. This past year definitely had many good memories. I’m looking forward to being 31 because it actually feels like a crucial year. Either I finish my dissertation or I’m done. Either Bear and I move in together or …not something I want to contemplate but I know I can’t be in limbo anymore on anything. So this year feels important but I really need to take it one day at a time and figure out my life.

SYTYCD Atlanta auditions were great - great girls with bodies of real people and great guys too. (I refused to watch the last ten minutes of wacky auditions and went to the other room to go online). New York auditions were great too – lots of impressive people. And I really love it that this year the producers are showing mostly great auditions and very little terrible ones. Very excited for Season 8.

“Men of Certain Age” is back! I love this show.

There was a TV spot for TNT’s “Falling Skies” the Spielberg’s alien invasion tv show. I won’t have time for it this summer but I would be interested in reading reviews for future reference.

SYTYCD Season 8! I started watching this show in the second season and it is my favorite reality show and the only one I watch (I did used to watch “Amazing Race” occasionally). It is so representative of summer for me. And I love it. I love the choreographers and the dancers and it is just fun. And Cat is very lovely and the best host. And they learned from last year with having 20 contestants this time and only bring All Star for top 10 – that is great news. And I’m glad to see Mary back – it wasn’t the same without her. I was very excited just to watch the auditions. Now it really feels like summer to me.

Hee. Funny clip of the day. Michael Sheen rocks. He did a dramatic reading of Twilight fanfiction. It is only a minute and a half. Now I never read “Twilight” nor do I want to but this was really funny nonetheless.

For some reason, the 12th of this summer stand out. In June, it was the musical or actually I remember most the night before, sleepy on the train with Bear’s amused face looking down at me. In July, it was the hospital waiting room. And now, just marking time.

“A Family Wedding” Wow, it is not funny and offensive movie. And the jokes are very very stupid and badly telegraphed. And who wouldn’t know Spanish curse words? This movie is really a waste of time.

SYTYCD. Finale. Lauren won! I do feel a little bit bad for Kent. But in this season, so heavily focused on boys, having a girl outlast them all and win is just wonderful. And it was fun to see so many good routines of the season.

SYTYCD Performance Finale - Top 3

Kent got into this great emotional space with his routine with Allison. The routine was about a marriage with perfect public face, breaking down in private. And by the end of the routine, Kent was not smiling his regular smile, he had a face of a man angry and tired from all the fighting. That was really good to see.

Mark and Robert were dancing to “Whip it” Yeah. Tyce sometimes surprises me. I still wish Sonya got her jazz hands on these boys.

I like all three finalists, but I am puling for Lauren a bit more. But I don’t care too much this season and any of the three can win, really. It is an OK season, but I it was not my favorite one. I think it was the new format. And lack of many girls.

Day 1 of New Hampshire trip.

Today was mostly a travel day. Yeva picked me up at10:20, so we could avoid morning traffic and we only got to the Lake region at 7pm with all the stops for lunch and dinner. I was ready at 9 but I know that for Yeva time is relative. The traveling actually went really smoothly. There wasn’t a lot of traffic and Yeva avoided a massive travel delay due to accident with a church bus next to George Washington bridge.

We met up with Bear, Marianna and Adama at around 12:30 at a rest stop in Connecticut and had a picnic lunch at one of the tables. I brought my little Swiss army nice and we had sandwiches with bread and turkey and tomatoes and cucumbers. Then we switched cars as I got into Bear’s car and Marianna and Adama transferred into Yeva’s car.

Then it was a lot of smooth, non-trafficy traveling to Manchester, New Hampshire where Yeva wanted to stop by for dinner at a sea food diner she found online. The road is pretty much the same as going to Boston and it is actually very familiar. I’ve never been in New Hampshire before and I was comparing the scenery to my trip to Vermont last year. The mountains certainly look different and so did the foliage.

At the seafood diner, I got crab cakes with baked potato, a salad and ice-tea. The ice-tea had a ridiculous amount of sugar in it. Yeva got lobster to our general amusement. Before we ate, Bear and I walked a bit in the plaza to stretch out legs a bit.

We drove another hour to get to the Lakes and got to our hotel at about 7:30pm. Close to there, Bear and I stopped at a gas station where I really needed to use the restroom and also we needed to pick up milk for breakfast.

The hotel was nice and fancy and not something I could afford on regular basis, especially not individual rooms. But we rented a cottage that goes with the hotel complex which is much more affordable for a group. We still get to use all the amenities of the hotel like the pool and the weight room but it is cheaper. The cottage had a living room with a fireplace and a flatscreen TV and a big window showing the lake. There is a fully stocked kitchen and a little balcony to enjoy the sun. Downstairs was the queen size room and a room with bunk beds. The only bathroom on the floor was in the room with the queen bed which was not that comfortable for Yeva who was staying in the bunk bed room. There was a staircase off the kitchen that led upstairs to a huge room with a king size bed and our own bathroom and another TV. There was a huge window with a lake view there too. Since I found the place and the trip was in honor of my and Bear’s 30th b-day, we took that fancy room. We also decided that in fairness we won’t split the cost of the cottage but pro-rated it so that Bear and I would pay a bit more and Yeva would pay least.

Pictures of our cottage )

Our room had the most amazing view. Just gorgeous. And the whole place was just nice and fancy.

pictures of our room )

After we unpacked we all went to the hotel indoor pool/Jacuzzi area. I think it is the first time I went swimming this summer. I was late enough in the evening so it was only the five of us. As we walked back to our place, there was this big moon over the lake and it was just amazing.

As we got back to the cottage, I caught the end of SYTYCD Top 5 (6) elimination. Billy and Jose were sent home. I feel sad about Billy, but it was definitely time for Jose to go.

Yeva fretted a bit over a bug she saw which she thought might be a bed bug. I turned on my computer and the internet to check and reassure her that the bug was just an ordinary bug.

Our bed was just so soft and wonderful and the shower had good pressure too. So far the trip has started really well.

SYTYCD One of 7 goes home. Well it is five guys to one girl. It is because Ashley was injured, but still. This show isn’t even trying this year. I hope Lauren at least stays for a while and not get injured as she is the only girl left. Jose in bottom three was nice. He needs to go home next. Guest dancers – both kids and adults were good. And musical guest based of a song used on the show and with all-star dances is a really good decision, show.

Emmy’s. They are on the lower scale of award shows I look forward to – mostly because I generally watch different kind of TV than the Emmy voters. I do look through the whole list of nominations, mainly because I want to see who gets choreography. Before SYTYCD I didn’t even care about this category. How is Cat Deeley always left out of Best Host category? This is definitely an injustice. Mia got a nomination for Addiction dance and Koop Island Blues and One from last season and Stacy Tooki got a nomination for the fear dance (which I don’t remember). Chelsie Hightower, a former contestant, got a choreographer nomination for Dancing with the Stars. Now that is awesome. I’m also excited that Andre Braugher got a nomination for “Men of a Certain Age” and that Sharon Gless got one for “Burn Notice.” “Moonshot” and “Special Relationship” got a nom for TV movie. Both movies, I liked. “Caprica” has one for visual effects. I’m disappointed that “Community” has been totally excluded. The lack of women writers is also pretty sad as there weren’t a lot of women writers nominated.

The spy exchange feels so ridiculous. The whole thing is like a big farce. Did we step back in time here?

Daily Show women respond to media stirred idea that just because there are few women writers and correspondents, women are not part of the show.

I was in a waiting room today for a while so I read an article in July’s National Geographic about Pakistan. It is nice to get a perspective of what life is like there and what people really think about religion and extremism. And this article was great in presenting multiple points of view.

“Friends with Money” I got this movie because Jason Isaacs is in it, frankly. But he wasn’t even in the movie too much. I had to look up the movie on IMDB to see what everyone’s name was after I watched about fifteen minutes and still couldn’t tell. The movie was alright. I didn’t like very many characters in it. I liked intellectually the issues the movie raises about life and money and economic disparities and all sort of relationship stuff – but I really couldn’t care much about most of the characters. So, in the end, I don’t think this was a successful movie.

Highlander. S1E14. Killer mimes! This was a very silly episode with some very hammy acting. It was worth it just for the adorable flashback of when Duncan meets Tessa for the first time. Still, killer mimes! Someone had to write this and think it would make a great episode. Why do two French policemen speak English to each other? This was a really good bad episode. Very silly in a lot of ways.

Bear’s father, who is a very Catholic conservative Republican, apparently thinks I share his views? He forwarded a very anti-Islamist email/chain letter which to my amusement laments killing of Jews in Europe because then they we replaced by many more Muslims. This email emphasizes the worst in Muslim men, and ignores that many Muslims are non-extremists, to advocate racial profiling. And hilariously, compares this to accomplishments of the Jews (like why did we try to kill them, the other threat is so much worse). Now, since I’m a historian, I can really appreciate the ridiculous irony of this. Did he think that because I’m Jewish I would appreciate the sentiments in this?

This email chain letter also somehow links terrorism to “socialist transformation brought on by current administration.” If my students wrote this kind of causation without any links and evidence, I would fail them on the spot. The letter also ends up as a plea for support for Israel (which I agree on for other reasons than Republicans usually give). All these jumping back and forth is such bad writing. There is no thesis to the letter as it addresses several points and not very clearly at that. And the letter is sent as a “memorial chain in memory” of all those who died during WWII. Yeah. I’m sure they would have been glad of that. We never talk politics in Bear’s house with his parents - they really don’t know what I (and Bear even) believe. But I think I need to somehow share the information that I’m a liberal Democrat, then this kind of stuff won’t be forwarded to me. Although it did provide entertainment for the day.

In other news, I got payroll paperwork for the fall semester by email today that I should fill out. My official contract hasn’t shown up yet (I know what I’m teaching and when because I got an informal scheduling email in May). Sometimes bureaucracy is silly. Hopefully, this time, payroll would pay me properly on time.

My National Geographic issues came – both June and July issues. The pictures sure are pretty.

SYTYCD 1 of 9 is voted off. Melinda goes home. Very predictable. At least the bottom three had two guys and one girl this time. And as much as I wish they tried to balance the genders, Melinda really needed to go home; she just irked. Still, now we are up to 6 boys and 2 girls. Next week, one dance with all-stars and one dance with another contestant – which will be wonderful. I guess, they will need to do two same gender dances. I was switching the channel for most of the episode tonight. Yay to solider-dance of guest dancers. Very cool. Group dance was set to Carmina Burana – but it wasn’t that special. Mark and Courtney danced “The Garden” again – I love that dance.

Cheesy ‘Highlander’ tonight (S1E7). Cue Duncan running in slow motion without a shirt on, with hair loose, through a shallow river with water all over him. I cracked up at that a lot.
