Netflix is putting “A Bit of Hugh and Laurie” on Instant later this month, damn it
(I just finished Season 1 DVD at home). Well, that does mean I can watch later seasons online which is really convenient.

I went to my neighbor Laura’s house to ask if they are going to Kol Nidre services on Friday and ended up staying for two and a half hours. I helped the Kid with her creative writing class. She is easier to teach than my students and she is eight. Then I hung out with Laura a little bit. It was nice to get out of the house and socialize a bit.

I keep losing my pens. I don’t know where they disappear to.

This morning I had a fairy lazy morning. It is raining and with five hours of sleep it feels like a lazy Sunday. I made Bear oatmeal for breakfast. Then I downloaded pictures from the restaurant. We also got a professional picture done in the restaurant last night. Bear had to leave for work, by until eleven when he left we relaxed and read our books together. He read that new Harry Dresden story I picked up.

After Bear left, I caught up on the summer finale of “Leverage” online.

I spent the afternoon reading rough drafts and using a “Highlander” episode as a reward. Every five brain numbing papers that can’t use quotes or know what a topic sentences is and tell me how religion provides morality or, the opposite, that religion should stay out of science because science doesn’t need morals to do its job, I get some sort of a TV episode. Then I have enough sanity to point to logical flaws in their ‘arguments’ and to tell them to be less vague.

Bit of Hugh and Laurie. S1E5. The teacher sketch where everything Hugh Laurie tries to teach about “Romeo and Juliet” is met by black stares was hilarious in its accuracy of what it sometimes feels like to be a teacher.

It is a teaching day, which means my body doesn’t like to sleep that much knowing I have to get up early. I woke up without the alarm clock at 6:40. Way too early.

I read some Stephen Fry this morning while eating breakfast in a lounge near my office; I finally got to the part where he falls in love for the first time with a boy at his school and I love his description of bowled over nature of it.

This was a Peer Review Day – the easiest day to teach. I printed out the Peer Review sheet on Tuesday. All I had to do today was collect one copy of their drafts and look over them and give some comments to the students while they read other student’s papers. Many don’t know why topic sentences matter. They like to start their paragraphs with a quote. I already got one guy who thinks he knows better and tries to argue with me when I point out that his thesis is unclear. Seriously, dude, if you want an “A” do listen to your teacher.

I got grilled chicken for lunch and finished the National Geographic article about King Tut’s family. Through DNA analysis, they discovered that his parents were full siblings. With CT scan, it was also apparent than Tut had a club foot and walking was very painful. He is always show with a walking stick – it is not ceremonial. I discovered that I really like archeological articles in this magazine. I think school is the perfect time to read this magazine too.

SyFy channel will show the rest of Season 1 of “Caprica” this year. They will start on Oct 5 at 10pm. Yay. I hope there will be a second season. This is my second favorite current TV show after “True Blood.” “House” is third, “Brothers and Sisters” is forth, followed by “Community” and “Modern Family” and “Dexter.”

Neil Gaiman is doing an interview at the New Yorker Festival in October and the tickets went on sale today. After some thinking about it and staring at the $30 price tag for a while and talking to Papa, I decided to go for it. I do enjoy seeing authors I like to read in person. One of my favorite outings remains J.K. Rowling, Stephen King and John Irving at Radio City Music hall many years ago. So I bought one ticket. Papa would have went with me but this is not Mama’s cup of tea, and she doesn’t like to be left by herself.

“Bit of Fry and Laurie” S1E4. Heavy metal recitation –hee. And I really liked the poem sketch in the beginning.

“Bit of Fry and Laurie” Finished ep 1 and watched ep2. I like how they turn the sketches on their heads often and change direction. I think I love English humor because it depends on language so much and puns too. And silliness. And snarkiness. And mocking. But mostly language. I am so glad that I got to be fluent in English to catch all subtleties, although I’m not as proficient, of course, in strictly English slang (as opposed to American one). Still, English humor feels as much home to me as Russian humor (which very much depends on context and which I found many Americans just don’t get).

Tomorrow is Bear and mine’s twelve year dating anniversary. We met the second day of college orientation our freshman year and after a week of circling each other, we started dating on Labor Day weekend. I count our anniversary from the time he asked to hold my hand since that was an unambiguous sign of his interest. (We were eighteen and very innocent and very young). But the whole Labor Day weekend was full of events like watching “Princess Bride” in a crowded college dorm and Bear putting his arm around me. (I had to rewatch the movie later in the year since I really was not paying attention to it.) Since then for our anniversary we usually go out to dinner, which he pays for, and he gives me one red rose. This year it was up to Bear to plan on own anniversary date.

So today was our anniversary celebration date. Bear came over around lunchtime as usual with my pretty rose and then we had lunch at home before going on our date. He took me to the botanical gardens about thirty minutes away from my house. I never been there but I did always want to see it. The weather was perfect – all blue skies. And we spent more than two hours just walking around the gardens. There was a white garden which was filled only with white flowers. And there was a greenhouse with bamboo and a small pond full of little red fishies. And some mosquitoes who do like eating Bear ankles. We also saw a large wedding party who were using the gardens for their wedding later and there were way too many bridesmaids in non that pleasant red/purple dress color. The bride wore shoes that matched those bridesmaid dresses and that was weird.

After we left the gardens, it was still early for dinner, so we drove my beach where we walked a bit until dinner. Then we went to have some Indian food at the restaurant near me we both like a lot. I got a cocktail, since it was a celebration after all (Bear never drinks alcohol). I had a “Tsunami” which was a combination of three types of rum. It was very delicious. (I think I prefer rum in my alcoholic choices not just because I like the taste – and I do – but also because one of the fictional characters in my favorite adventure books as a child liked it.)

We ended our evening by watching “Black Adder Goes Forth” (now on Netflix Instant Play) and some snuggling. I really can’t believe it has been twelve years, it really seems like yesterday.

Today was my actual first day of school as I was teaching my first class of the semester.

Waking up at 6 something just means that by 3pm I’m wiped out. I do forget over the summer how to get into normal people morning schedule. Why does someone want to be awake before eight?

I got to school early as usual and had lots of time before my class. In the morning, I read my Stephen Fry book and had some breakfast outside by the fountain. Then I came up with Assignment 1. And printed my own Writing sample to replace the standard school one. I’m really glad I gave my own because I can really gauge their reading ability. I already have a silly writing sample with chimpanzees not having supermarkets or police. The girl is misreading Goodall and instead of answering the question, she focused one line about chimps and went off topic into la-la land.

I found over the years that when I teach two classes I always like my first class than second (with few exceptions) and I think this still holds. There is more boy/girl balance in the first class and also the classroom is more square and feels more friendly.

Freshmen are so cute. They still raise their hand to go to the bathroom.

I was just pretty wiped by the time I got home after 4:30 and I spent the rest of the day pretty much relaxing on my bed.

“A Bit of Fry and Laurie” Pilot. God, they are so young. Late twenties, I think. It is very English humor and lots of fun to watch. I do love these kinds of comedy shows. I’m glad Netflix has the DVDs.
