What I like about January 1 is that is tends to be a nice and quiet day, usually quite relaxing, like a breath you take before a new year starts.

We drove over to my parents' yesterday in the morning for the New Year celebrations. We always celebrate at home as it is a family holiday for us. We Skyped with relatives in Minsk and in California to wish them Happy New Year and just to chat and chilled a bit. Around 5:30 we all dressed up, mostly in red and pink colors, for the upcoming Rooster year, (except Bear who was a black rooster), and took lots of annual photos around the New Year fir tree. Then we had our holiday dinner. So much yummy food! My Mom made the usual olivier salad and pod-shuba (beets with herring), crab salad, fish liver salad and beets/plums/nuts salad. She also made regular veggie salad and cabbage/egg pie. And for main course there was meat french style (meat covered with potatoes and dried apricots). And there were open faced sandwiches with salmon and also with caviar. And bread, of course. So much food! (and lots of leftovers for today). In the past, I wasn't always a big fan for beets and herring classic, but I'm really into it lately.

After this giant meal, we did bedtime for Tanya and I put her to bed. I was pretty much falling asleep with her but my Dad made sure to get me up by 10:30pm to sneak out of the bedroom so I could come downstairs and have some desert - they got fruit tart cake, and there was zefir (marshmallows in chocolate), and dried fruit, with tea, of course.

Then we mostly watched TV and hung out until midnight and watched the ball drop while drinking some sparkling juice. Then I just went to bed, I was very tired. But, of course, I couldn't easily fall asleep once I was in bed and the night was a bit restless. Still, it was a good calm new years, full of deliciousness and family time, just the way I like it.

In the morning, Tanya slept in until 7:30am, but then we all got up, got dressed and went downstairs to the New Year tree to open presents that Ded Moroz (Russian Santa) left for Tanya (and a couple for Bear and I) under the tree. Tanya got 4 books (2 from me - Crocodile Gena in Russian and one of the Elephant and Piggie books in English, and 2 from my parents - both in English - 5 minute Princess Stories and When the Tiger Came to Tea). And she got a little magnet fishing game, which is also a puzzle, and a nice tea set with toy dishes, cups, tea pot, forks and spoons. She is playing with all her new toys. I got Bear a Deadpool graphic novel he wanted (we split our presents to each other in two - some for Christmas and some for New Year) and my parents got him an Amazon gift certificate. I got "Star Trek Beyond" from Bear and the last Leonard Cohen CD and a book by Stefan Zweig from my parents. I was very happy with my presents. I'm listening to Leonard Cohen right now - which is a little bittersweet.

Around 9:30am, Bear, Tanya and I went to the playground. The weather was beautiful today, not too cold, and sunny. Tanya went on her little tricycle, which she actually pedaled by herself a little bit today. It felt like the whole world was still asleep. There was no one about and very little cars on the road. We had the playground to ourselves. Well, and the three squirrels who kept chasing each other. I had fun watching them. There was also a field full of geese right outside the playground - we watched them walk around a bit in the little puddle. They had black necks and white faces with black beaks and white bellies. Tanya really liked watched them. It was just very relaxing to spend time together, chase Tanya a little around and go down a few slides. It was only when we were about to leave after 11 when someone else came. New Year is definitely a nice quite day.

I even got a little nap in when Tanya went for a nap and read my book too. I'm reading "It's hard to Be a God" now and the main character's attitude to the culture he's studying is driving me a little crazy. I go from liking the book to slowing down in wanting to read it because of the whole "civilized" attitude of the protagonist. Reading Strugaski brothers is always strange though.

We came home after all the naps, I unpacked (including all the holiday food my Mom passed along, yum), paid the January bills (at least for this apartment, still have to do the new one), and just catching up online a bit. Overall, a nice day.

I don't do New Year resolutions but I guess I want to try to be more present and not waste too much time online. And read and write, of course.

I'm not very concerned about LJ issues, I don't write anything that should matter to any government, and I have been cross posting from Dreamwidth for years - in fact it remains my face. But if anyone wants to add me on DW for back-up, I have the same username .

My Remus/Sirius Small Gifts story was posted a week or so go. It's called Christmas in July. If you are curious you can read it here.

And finally my Book List 2017 is here with books I would like to read this year.

We are back home after spending New Years at my parents. We are all unpacked and Tanya is finally sleeping (I think she's getting like five teeth at once, poor baby) and I'm sitting here, listening to all my new music, and writing out the new book list for the year. I always like the hope of the new year, so much potential for good things.

Happy New Year!

It feels quite appropriate that at this point of our Dante project (I just finished Canto 27 of Purgatory this week) we just said goodbye to Virgil and Dante is about to enter the Earthly Paradise. Feels auspicious.

This week I've been doing a lot of cross stitching in the evenings. I'm done with cross stitches, almost done with half-stitches and will just have back stitch and french knots left. And once Janna's baby is born, I will add the personalized details. I love seeing the picture grow.

I've been watching 'Friends' episodes in the background as I cross stitch. It's perfect since I mostly listen and don't have to look at the screen as much. I miss that show. I rewatched Monica and Chandler proposal and Phoebe's wedding. I can't believe how long ago it ended.

2015 overall was an even keel year for me. I was mostly either at home with Tanya or at work two days a week during the semesters. I didn't really have vacations but I did spend a week at my in-laws and Bear and I had 3 dates - Hedwig on Broadway, Jeremy and Fran's wedding and our recent hike and Star Wars date. I also went to Yeva's birthday party at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan.

Other than the whole business with the apartment, nothing really upset the status quo.

I read fun books and saw some good TV. I finally watched "Spartacus", which clicked for me this year and I loved "Sense8" and "Jessica Jones". I only saw "Star Wars" at the movie theater this year but it was fun.

The best thing about the year for me was meeting new LJ friends and making my LJ flist much more alive and fun. And getting more book recommendations that I can ever read! And finally reading the eight Tomek book to resolve a 20 year cliffhanger. And my flist led me to the Hamilton biography, which then fed into my interest in Hamilton the Musical - I'm listening to the soundtrack on repeat.

And, of course, watching Tanya grow and learn to walk and talk has really been amazing. At 17 months she is a different person from her 5 months self (with the same core personality though -she's my little hooligan).

I don't make resolutions but I do hope to write more and to master pies in the new year.

Happy New Year to those who celebrate it!

This evening I went to YouTube to play some shofar sounds for Tanya, who pretty much ignored it and played with her toys. I also did apples and honey thing. That's pretty much it. But it still feels like renewal. I was trying to show Tanya some pictures from my Jewish holiday book and there was a little prayer/poem there which I didn't notice before despite having this book for years. It was lovely and I wanted to share it (the last two lines were not in the book). I especially like "from defeat to defeat to defeat" until one realized that life and journey are the victory:

Life is a Journey )

Six years ago (Jewish calendar years) I started my blog on Dreamwidth. I kept a journal on and off since childhood and in September 2009 I transitioned to the online one. (I got a LJ account in 2011 to participate in a fanfic fest). I was not in the best place health wise and in life overall, and I wanted to write more. I also wanted to finally actually read the Torah, so I made a goal of reading 5 chapters a day (for example Genesis 1-5) and writing out a WTF Moment of the day. It's amusing to read it now. I used to post every day. I'm glad I have the record now.

I want to try to get back to posting more often. There are two memes floating around - a fanfic meme and me meme. I'm going to try to do them even if I can't often post from my laptop and have to use my phone.

30 Days of Me Meme; Day 1

Day 1: Your current relationship or how single life is

I'm married to Bear (not his real name but I call him that in real life). We met when we were eighteen years old on the second day of college in the college bookstore 17 years ago. College hasn't started yet; it was orientation weekend. We were both in an astronomy class, which I took for my science requirement. I was a history major and he did psychobiology so this was our only class together. We met by the astronomy textbooks and then the next day by the mailboxes. A week or so later we started dating and we've been together ever since. After three years of dating in college and seeing each other all the time, we were in a long distance relationship for a very long time since I started grad school. We did not get married until three years ago, after fourteen years of dating. So I never really been single as an adult. But because of the long distance, I feel like we both got to be independent and grow, so I don't think I missed out. I'm definitely very happy not to deal with the dating scene because I would be horrible at it. He is the only person I ever loved romantically and I'm perfectly happy with that.

30 Days of Fanfic; Day 1

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

When I was a kid I used to make stories up all the time and live in imaginary worlds. Often I was writing fanfic in my head without knowing that was what I was doing. It was a lot of Mary Sue stuff.

I read fanfic for a long time, maybe five years before I wrote anything down. It was 2009 and a rainy day and I just wanted to write down this idea I had. It just needed to be written. It was for Harry Potter fandom and for Snape. I sort of wrote a very short Snape/Lily sketch. It was called No Words Needed Harry Potter was the first fandom I really got involved in - it got me into fanfic after I saw an article on fanfic in USA Today. So it was pretty natural it was the first I would write in. After a couple of stories, I didn't really write again until December 2010 when I was too shy to join an awesome Highlander fest but wanted to try writing anyway as if I was participating. It was fun and I got good responses after posting that story ( Holiday in the Sun ) so in 2011 I really started writing more often.

Here are all the questions for both memes )

Happy New Year!

I did stay up last night to watch the ball drop but I was a little too sleepy to appreciate it. And Tanya tried new food so it made her wake up frequently. It is a sleepy new year so far.

But we got dressed up last night to take our annual pictures, and we had a New Year feast and this morning Ded Moroz (Russian Santa) brought lots of presents for Tanya, Bear and me. My parents don't get any. Presents are just for kids but my parents still give me some too.

I was just expecting a book. And my Dad gave me 'The Martian' by Andy Weir, but my parents also decided to give me a new laptop. Granted, mine now is pretty crappy as it pauses and freezes all the time, but I really wasn't expecting it. My parents jokingly called it a bonus for giving them a grandchild. Bear gave me the second season of 'Community'.

Tanya got blocks with Russian letters and blocks with numbers from me, several books from my parents and a stuffed hedgehog. She loved the bows on the wrapping paper the most and the hedgehog.

I got Bear the new John Cleese autobiography and my parents gave him a set of Harry Potter movies, a fancy sweater and jacket.

Not a bad start for the year.

P.s. 9pm - My Dad's cousin Lenya and his 8 year old son Edik (Edward) came over in the afternoon. Edik got 2015 Guiness Book of Records for New Year and I got the 3d app so we could scan some pages and see 3d images through the phone. Like the tallest man rising out the book and standing in our living room. That was fun.

On the other hand, my mood was spoiled at bit because one federal job I applied to decided to use New Year's Day to let me know that they won't hire me. Couldn't they have waited until tomorrow?

Happy New Year!

I don't really do New Year resolutions. It is impossible to keep it up. But I think if I do small resolutions, something each month it might work better. So or January, especially for the next three weeks before a new semester starts and I go back to work, I'm going to try to update my blog much more often, be more productive with my break (i.e. not just be passive with Internet or TV) and write more in general.

Bear and I had a good New Year celebration. We, as usual, went to my parents' house where my Mom makes a big holiday table. We all dress up and take holiday pictures. She made duck this year and lots of delicious holiday food. I had to pace myself so I wouldn't eat too much. We also chatted with my Aunt and Uncle in Minsk over Skype when they had their New Year. My Dad got a new Kindle Fire for his birthday a month ago, so we used that. (I generally been playing with it when I'm over there - yesterday I watched the "Doctor Who" Christmas episode on it). My Dad downloaded a Russian New Year concert that just aired in Moscow eight hours earlier and we watched that on their big TV. It was pretty fun, actually. And at midnight we watched the ball drop. It is always weird to me that on regular days when I usually go to sleep at midnight, I have no problem getting to midnight but when you are waiting for it, it seems to take a long time.

In the morning, Bear and I opened presents (only the youngest get presents - I didn't have to get anything for my parents). I got a lot of nice things; my parents are really great.

List of New Year Loot )

So it was a nice low-key celebration, just the way I like it. I have a lot of hopes for 2014 so I wish that it will be a good year. I need to make a new Book List for this year - that will be one of my projects for tomorrow since I will be stuck at home due to the coming snow storm. Reading more is always a goal!

I hope everyone has a good, healthy and prosperous New Year!
