Labor day weekend ended up being very pleasant as the hurricane passed us by. So no rain, like anticipated, but sunny and breezy. On Sunday, Tanya ended up going to the playground in the morning with Bear, to the butterfly house/nature house with me, Bear and Regina (Bear's Mom), and in the late afternoon to the beach playground with me, Bear and Regina. So lots of outings.

I walked around the nature house - they had a colony of bees behind glass, parrots and other little animals - but I didn't go to the butterfly house - there wasn't enough time and I didn't want to pay $5 for 10 minutes. Tanya went in with Bear and Regina while I sat outside. It was lovely scenery but Bear and I were a little hectic and stressed. Regina wanted to go here with Tanya but by the time she got back from church, and ate breakfast and got ready it was 10:40. (We were ready at 10). The butterfly house was only 15 minute drive but Tanya usually eats lunch around 11:30 and we don't like to mess with her routine much. But we were visiting Bear's parents and she wanted to do this, so we went, but I was looking at the time. Tanyaended up eating at 12:15 and didn't seem too cranky, so it worked out but we did feel rushed.

We came back to our apartment in Brooklyn at 9pm on Monday night and by 8:30am the next morning we were back in the car. Bear drove Tanya and me to my parents's house in Staten Island, before heading to work (he's away until Saturday). It will be nice to finally stay put at home next week.

This afternoon my Mom, Tanya and I went to the local zoo. We went June 1st last time and Tanya still remembers white and black llama that she fed there. No llamas today, only goats. She was afraid to feed them directly so I told her to throw food pellets on the ground. She enjoyed that. And I would put a pellet on top of the wooden gate and one goat would lean his head and grab it with a big toungue, to Tanya's amusement.

We saw a flemish giant rabbit today, they are always sleeping, in the afternoon, and I liked Geoffrey's marmoset, emperor tamarin, Patagonian cavy and a lemur. Woodchuck Chuck was out, playing with his stuffed toy, I think owl. Tanya rode the carousel twice, she loved that. And just three months and already I saw different reactions to animals in the zoo, more attention, although she still runs around with too much energy. Still, 2 years and 1 month is definitely different that 22 months.

We are still waiting for the Recognition agreement. It's getting a little ridiculous. Fingers crossed for getting it by the end of the week.

On Monday, I finished reading Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice . I really ended up enjoying it very much. The middle section was very tense and in general I liked the story. I was very impressed with the author's ability to convey several 'I' of the ship at the same time, to show AI with many bodies and how that built tension. And I liked the Empire not placing emphasis on gender by using 'she' throughout (my kid is confusing gender pronouns in Russian right now, and gender word endings, which makes me even more aware how our languages teacher gender). I am going to wait before reading the sequels though, because it is a little too much. Word building sometimes makes my head hurt. But I'm reading them in the future for sure.

I got Naomi Novik's Uprooted from the library for my Kindle and I'm reading that now. I don't know if I like it yet. Twice already I'm one step ahead of the main character. We'll see.

Tanya and I have been staying at my parents' since last Wednesday, April 13th, because of Bear's work schedule. He only had half a Saturday and Sunday off last week, so it made more sense for him to just come visit it us here on those days. But in return he has a three day weekend this coming weekend so we can do our yearly Seder at Marianna's on Saturday, which I planned already and almost finished shopping for. My parents will drive us back on Saturday morning.

I had a lot of grading until this Monday, but I wasn't willing to give up the warm summery weather this weekend. So I ended up grading at the playground a lot. I got to sit in the sun, play a bit, and got a lot done. Now I'm enjoying my week of no grading until next Monday when I get the last batch of papers. The end of the semester is in sight.

On Tuesday, I went to my hairdresser for color, highlights and cut, so my hair is a bit shorter now, shoulder length, and much neater. I also went to vote. New York had its primary yesterday and since I'm a registered Democrat since forever, I could go participate. I've trying to avoid all the election coverage as much as I can, since it all just depresses me and annoys me. But obviously voting is something I wasn't going to miss. Go Hillary!

Meanwhile, since the weather has finally became warm and lovely with blue skies and t-shirts, we spent last Wednesday afternoon and today's afternoon at our local zoo. Staten Island Zoo is very small but cute and it's free on Wednesday from 2 to 5, which makes it a perfect outing. We went twice last year, but Tanya is older now and talking, so it was different.

She is still not into all the animals; monkeys and leopard bore her, apparently. But donkeys and geese and swans and ducks are her favorite. When we ask her what she'd seen in the zoo, first thing she says is "eeah" which her word for donkey, based on Russian name for Eeyore (she loves Russian Winnie the Pooh cartoons). And she loves starring at the water. Meanwhile I was enjoying the kangaroos. Last week they were mostly napping, but today they were skipping around. The Emus are pretty fun too.

The rabbit and pig where mostly napping, but the woodchuck Chuck came out today and we took a look at him a bit. Between last week and this week, alpacas and sheep were shorn, so that was a funny contrast. Today, the otter and the Arctic Fox where also out more, enjoying the sun and grooming themselves. It was warmer today so they were probably just enjoying the sun. Eagle, on the other hand, was hiding today, while last week he posed for my camera and spread his wings.

Today I brought my actual camera, not just my phone, to take some photos and in paying attention to the ducks, I think I found my favorite. It's called a smew (real name), and it is white with black stripes. When it's swimming it looks like a superhero duck with a black mask on. It was pretty cute.

Tanya also liked the reptile section, but not for the snakes themselves, more for water in the crocodile tank and the scary snake noise that starts playing if you step on a certain square. I think she would like horror movies when she grows up because she would go up to it, hear a noise, run to hide by my legs, and then would go "again!"

She is talking so much more. Distinct sentences, constant repetition and answering questions. This morning, when I got to the garage to go outside and she was there already playing with her green toy shovel, she saw me, showed me the shovel and said in Russian, "Mama, Tanya is playing with shovel. Green." She is talking more in Russian now, although she does say English sentences occasionally.

I need to make a separate TV post on Grimm, Supergirl and Flash.

How is August half over already? It's really going by fast. We are starting another heatwave for the next couple of days. That should be fun. At least there is a beach by my parents.

Tanya and I stayed at my parents's house from Tuesday to today this week. We got back this morning. I think she's teething again because she's crankier today and clingier too. It is cute when she says 'mama' all the time and wants to hug me but she doesn't want me out of her sight lately.

We did have summer fun at my parents. On Wednesday afternoon we went with my Mom to the zoo. We went in May last time, and as she is older, Tanya was certainly paying more attention to the animals. She really liked starring at the kangaroos and emus and at the donkeys, the rabbits and the cows. She also liked sheep. The zoo has two black swans and one white one and four type of geese - that was engaging. This time in a little pond under the bridge I also saw white swans with black heads and necks. I've never seen those before and they were certainly pretty. Of course, for all the animals, Tanya really wanted just to play with the cooler that we took with us the most. It was pretty funny.

The zoo is free from 2 to 5 on Wednesdays but my Mom wanted to drive in early to fit Tanya's nap in and grab parking. We ended up on an impromptu hike as we found a nice park with nature trails near the zoo. It was quiet and very pretty with a pond and ducks and high trees. I haven't gone on a hike in a while; it was just lovely.

On Thursday and Friday mornings we went to the beach. On Thursday it was just with my Mom and on Friday with both my parents since my Dad had a day off. Friday outing was a little better since on Thursday there were a lot of vicious flies. I don't think I ever encourtered flies on the beach before much less these nasty evil biting ones. Friday was much better. The water at least was great to dip feet in (I don't really like swimming in the ocean but I love to walk on the shore).

I also managed to watch a movie yesterday since my Dad took Tanya to the playground. (My Dad played with her after work on Thursday and Wednesday too but she wouldn't let me leave the room. I settled for reading a book on the couch but she would periodically come over and climb up for a hug and a kiss. Super sweet but not quite relaxing). I watched 'The Butler' on Netflix. It was a bit too much. I liked parts of the movie and the scenes of civil rights protests were very effective but plot felt too constructed occasionally. This movie probably had all the actors of Hollywood in it and the acting was good but it just didn't gel for me overall.

I got Harry Potter stamps today! I was in the post office, mailing our lease and I saw them right in front. So, of course, I had to get that stamp book (20 stamps). I don't think I can bring myself to use them. I want to keep that Snape stamp, at least. And the stamp of 11 year old Hermione raising her hand high is pretty awesome too. They come in a pretty little booklet too. I can't believe I didn't know there were Harry Potter stamps. (I was wearing my Ravenclaw summer baseball cap that I got in Harry Potter World in Orlando too; I'm a proud nerd.)

I went to the post office in the first place today because my Mom and I made a trip to Baby R Us with Tanya napping in the stroller to get organic baby food. I do love going to Baby R Us for that because of both sales and variety. I got 20 squeezables for $15 and 20 Earth Best jars for $16. And we had $5 in reward points. She is set for a while. The store is maybe 15-20 minutes away walking and post office and bank are not too far from there to make it worth the walk.

The weather got to lovely 68F today. It was warm with a bit of wind to require a light jacket with gorgeous blue skies. My morning walk was over an hour too, so my feet are nice and tired.

Yesterday we went to the Zoo. It's free from 2 to 5 on Wednesdays and the weather was finally warm enough. It's not too far, about 30 minutes by car with a free parking lot. We took a cooler with Tanya's homemade soup with us since she eats at 3 and drove there right after her nap.

We spent an hour and a half there and it wasn't too crowded yet. Lots of kids and families. Tanya was very serious most of the time - she is an observer when it comes to new environments - and she is too young to really understand or pay attention. Still, I like showing her new stuff. She did smile a lot at the alligator, but that was probably because first we looked at the eyes sticking out of the water and then had to go lower to look at his body underwater. She liked going up and down. We came back to that alligator maybe an hour later and he didn't move at all.

We saw kangaroos and emu, children's zoo with sheep and goat and Llama like brown creature and big fat pig being led on a leash, geese, ducks, 2 black swans, etc. I liked children's zoo a lot; you can feed the animals and we read about all those animals. I can't wait until she is old enough. The famous groundhog Chuck was lying on the steps of his wooden house in a very relaxed position, just chilling. It was pretty funny.

We also saw otters, amur leopards, different monkeys, lizards and snakes and some fishes and many other small creatures and birds. At 3pm we found an area with picnic tables which was pretty empty except for various loud peacocks roaming around. Tanya had her soup and then I nursed her as we watched one peacock unfold his big magnificent tail.

As we made our way through the zoo I got to be quite social and talk to other moms or grandmothers, which I generally don't do. But with so many little kids around and Tanya looking cute too, it was pretty easy. We met a little 7 months old girl named Ophelia (which is kind of an awesome name, although I immediately thought that being named after a disturbed suicidal fictional character might be hard for the girl later).

And when we were standing by the leopard area, instead of looking at the leopard, Tanya saw and focused on the bright green Ninja Turtle hat a little 1 year old boy was wearing next to us. She loves hats. Reaches for all hats all the time. The little boy smiled at her and both babies reached out to say high. She is nine months old and it already starts!

Bear was sad a little that missed the first zoo trip (and was suspicious of the little boy's motives :) ) but we are going to aquarium in a few weeks for my birthday so he gets to do that with her.

Back to summer schedule week with four days of canvasing all over various areas of the city. Canvasing means long hours, achy feet, going up and down stairs, getting into buildings - but it also means going to different parts of the city each day. I do really like that part. Today was closer to home too, which was nice since Bear came to pick me up when I was done. (probably also why I ran into Yeva today, completely accidentally, while I was canvasing although it wasn't that close to her place)

But even with the regular schedule and back to work this week, I still managed to have three fun events, this week - one totally unplanned. So I'm make it a list.

1. On Wednesday, after a long summer of planning to do, Bear and I drove to the Bronx Zoo to spend the day there. Regular zoo is free on Wednesday and Total Experience Zoo is $15 instead of $34, so we just decided to go for it. I haven't been in the Bronx Zoo in maybe nineteen years. We had a lot of fun. We saw the gorilla house and bears and elephants and giraffes and so many others. And we didn't even get to do the whole zoo. There was just so much. So lots of fun. We got Chinese food on the way back and then Bear dropped me off at Yeva's for a few hours. I think I might do a picture post in a week when I'm not so busy.

2. The second fun event was completely not planned. I was in the fellows meeting in the campaign headquarters around 5pm on Friday, waiting for the meeting, to start when another girl mentioned that Amanda Palmer was giving a free concert at Lincoln Center at 7:30 that night. Since Bear was hanging out with his best friend that night and would be home late and my meeting got out at 6, I thought that it would be awesome to just go. So I did. I took the subway up, got frozen yogurt for dinner (I wasn't that hungry and frozen yogurt is a great dinner in that mood). I caught the tail end of Hungry March band and Vau de Vire Society - which was like a circus mixed with a brass band (they also did one song with Amanda Palmer later). And then I moved to the other stage for the show. Rosin Coven opened the show - they describe themselves as pagan lounge ensemble - I like the voice of the main singer very much. And then at 8:30 Amanda Palmer came out with her band with the special appearance for one song of the Dresden Dolls partner. My favorite parts were the ukelele songs - I think those songs and lyrics are much more personal and interesting and I heard them before more. She played a new song - very sad one "bigger on the inside" but it was very, very emotional and touching at the end. Very lovely. I was also amused by many people there who just came for the free Lincoln Center Summer stage concert and had not idea who she was or anything - that was fun to watch. But mostly I was just exited to see Amanda Palmer live and for free.

3. And the last fun event was planned for almost two months - Janna's baby shower . I got to Yeva's in the morning, since she was driving. She did my hair in a fancy braid. The shower was in this brunch place on the Lower East Side and we spent maybe four hours there. The food was very good, especially the cake = passion fruit meringue cake. And all the cute little baby girl clothes were so adorable. The presents were so fun to see Janna open. I gave her the stroller blanket with animals she wanted, and two bibs I cross-stitched. (I'm going to put the pictures of those soon too). Janna and Bert are going to name their baby girl Josephine, Jo for short.

So it was a pretty good week. Bear and I also tried a new board game yesterday - it's called "Pandemic." It's a cooperative game, which means all the players need to work together to win to find disease cures. It was pretty fun. I like working together and figuring it out and not just competition - that was certainly different.

This morning I went to visit my grandparents and to a farmer’s market nearby. They live about half an hour away, but over a toll bridge, and we go visit them every two weeks. On a way I heard one of the most fun things on the radio. They started with a classic Russian song, on the accordion, which after a verse transitioned into a modern hip-hop commentary on the song, the singer and the lyrics. It was very amusing and clever. A good combination of musical genres that did not feel tacky.

Bear came over in the afternoon and we went to a zoo. It was raining all morning, pouring really, and I was feeling very lethargic and didn’t particularly wanted to go outside but we overcame the inertia and went on a date we were planning. This is a very local zoo but one that boasts a big reptile house with pythons and all kinds of rattlesnakes and turtles. I learned more about snakes then I ever knew. They even had an example of snake heart and the how it beats. They also had a small tropical wing with spider monkeys, which looked at people just as much as people looked at them, bats, tarantulas, and lots of marmosets. I’ve never seen marmosets before and they were very cute creatures that looked like small balding old men. The zoo had Geoffrey’s marmoset. They are a type of primate, small in size and very fuzzy. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-headed_Marmoset In the small African wing there were two leopards. One was pacing back and forth waiting for its dinner; it was making me a bit nervous. The zookeeper said they eat a pound of special cat food, calibrated to their weight.

After the zoo we went to a Halloween store to look at costumes and scary props. They had really nice party goblets that were black and said “poison” on them.

Genesis WTF moment of the day: The last five chapters of the Genesis are mainly about the death of Jacob. Nothing too crazy is going on. But the “blessings” Jacob bestows on his sons are a bit frelled up since some are not exactly positive. Jacob still resented the fact that his oldest son Reuben slept with an equivalent of his step-mother, since Reuben seduced one of the servants who bore Jacob children. So Jacob told him that for all his excellence, Reuben will “no longer excel” because he “defiled” his father’s bed. Simeon and Levi who murdered all men from the tribe of a guy who raped their sister, got the “blessing” of being dispersed and scattered. (Jacob is referring to future tribes here, since the twelve sons are the founders of the tribes of Israel. Israel is a name given to Jacob by God after they fought one night in a very HoYay way) Some sons like Judah and Joseph receive blessings in the traditional sense, they are the favorites along with Benjamin. There are certainly preferences of Jacob, he favors some sons over others which can be seen in his blessings. This is it for Genesis. I will take a short break from the Bible and start on Exodus on October 1. I’m on Bible overload. But I finished Genesis!
