Tanya and I have been staying at my parents' since last Wednesday, April 13th, because of Bear's work schedule. He only had half a Saturday and Sunday off last week, so it made more sense for him to just come visit it us here on those days. But in return he has a three day weekend this coming weekend so we can do our yearly Seder at Marianna's on Saturday, which I planned already and almost finished shopping for. My parents will drive us back on Saturday morning.

I had a lot of grading until this Monday, but I wasn't willing to give up the warm summery weather this weekend. So I ended up grading at the playground a lot. I got to sit in the sun, play a bit, and got a lot done. Now I'm enjoying my week of no grading until next Monday when I get the last batch of papers. The end of the semester is in sight.

On Tuesday, I went to my hairdresser for color, highlights and cut, so my hair is a bit shorter now, shoulder length, and much neater. I also went to vote. New York had its primary yesterday and since I'm a registered Democrat since forever, I could go participate. I've trying to avoid all the election coverage as much as I can, since it all just depresses me and annoys me. But obviously voting is something I wasn't going to miss. Go Hillary!

Meanwhile, since the weather has finally became warm and lovely with blue skies and t-shirts, we spent last Wednesday afternoon and today's afternoon at our local zoo. Staten Island Zoo is very small but cute and it's free on Wednesday from 2 to 5, which makes it a perfect outing. We went twice last year, but Tanya is older now and talking, so it was different.

She is still not into all the animals; monkeys and leopard bore her, apparently. But donkeys and geese and swans and ducks are her favorite. When we ask her what she'd seen in the zoo, first thing she says is "eeah" which her word for donkey, based on Russian name for Eeyore (she loves Russian Winnie the Pooh cartoons). And she loves starring at the water. Meanwhile I was enjoying the kangaroos. Last week they were mostly napping, but today they were skipping around. The Emus are pretty fun too.

The rabbit and pig where mostly napping, but the woodchuck Chuck came out today and we took a look at him a bit. Between last week and this week, alpacas and sheep were shorn, so that was a funny contrast. Today, the otter and the Arctic Fox where also out more, enjoying the sun and grooming themselves. It was warmer today so they were probably just enjoying the sun. Eagle, on the other hand, was hiding today, while last week he posed for my camera and spread his wings.

Today I brought my actual camera, not just my phone, to take some photos and in paying attention to the ducks, I think I found my favorite. It's called a smew (real name), and it is white with black stripes. When it's swimming it looks like a superhero duck with a black mask on. It was pretty cute.

Tanya also liked the reptile section, but not for the snakes themselves, more for water in the crocodile tank and the scary snake noise that starts playing if you step on a certain square. I think she would like horror movies when she grows up because she would go up to it, hear a noise, run to hide by my legs, and then would go "again!"

She is talking so much more. Distinct sentences, constant repetition and answering questions. This morning, when I got to the garage to go outside and she was there already playing with her green toy shovel, she saw me, showed me the shovel and said in Russian, "Mama, Tanya is playing with shovel. Green." She is talking more in Russian now, although she does say English sentences occasionally.

I need to make a separate TV post on Grimm, Supergirl and Flash.

It's Election Day and Papa will pick me up from work so we could go vote. Then I'm going to stay at my parents' house for the night, before heading to work tomorrow. I'm not very excited for the election because I'm not a huge De Blasio fan, especially having spent the summer working for his Democratic opposition. But at the same time, I'm not going to vote for Lhota and other Republicans. Well, my Dad is going to vote Republican so we are going to cancel each other's votes, so that makes me feel a little better. I will, of course, still go vote because I never take that privilege for granted.

My semester has been busy, mostly with grading so I have not been updating my journal. I do read my reading list often but I should try to keep up with my own journal. So I thought that if I focus on specific topics it might help me update at least a few days a week.

I want to especially talk about books that I've read, so I will do an update on that Friday, once I'm done with grading my writing classes.

Here are some general updates:

Two of my friends had babies. My friend Janna had a daughter Josephine (Jo for short) on October 3rd and my friend Tjamke had a son Jasper on September 30th. I went to visit Janna and Jo a few times (including after a really nice dinner with the girls on Saturday).

On the other side of the spectrum, the father of one of my best friends (Yeva) is dying from liver cancer at 60. He has from a few weeks to a few months. We've been trying to be there for Yeva as much as we can but it all feels pretty useless. So just throwing a lot of positive thoughts their way.

In more pleasant events, one of my friends, a coworker with whom I commuted last year, wrote a play called "Side Street" and got it produced last month. I went to see it with very little expectations. It was staged in this small room, with about 22 people in the audience, with four actors. And it was amazing. I had a really great time. The play is about a mother/daughter relationship. The actors were brilliant and I loved being so close that I could see their every emotion. I'm so glad I went.

And Bear and I just booked a trip to Dominican Republic for December, right after my semester ends. I am so looking forward to just lying on a beach for a whole week. I'm already tired from the semester and all the grading and there are still six weeks to go.

And finally, RS Games 2013 are just nearing their conclusion (Go Team Post-Hogwarts), and people can still vote on the stories. I did like the way mine turned out and I'm continually amazed by the talent of all the writers there.

The last week and a half has certainly been eventful with the slow recovery from the storm.

I stayed up on election night to watch the results on my laptop. My parents were going to sleep in my living room (there were staying with me since their house had no power and it was really cold) – my Dad, who is a Republican, did want to stay up later but my Mom wouldn’t let him. So I took my laptop to the bedroom. I was going to wait until 11 to wait for California polls to close but I wasn’t really expecting to get the results that night. I was checking various news websites and Comedy Central was awesomely transmitting Jon Stewart’s election night special live online, so that was playing in the background too. And then I saw that Ohio went for Obama and then NBC called it. It took a bit to sink in. Mostly it was the sense of relief. I did go to the living room and told my dad, I couldn’t wait.

My parents went back home last Friday, when it got warmer since they needed to be there for any electricity updates – like the ridiculous rule of shelling out your own money ($150) for the inspector to certify that nothing got damaged before electricity could be turned out. The water didn’t get into their house – it stopped inches from it, but that didn’t matter. But they did finally, finally got their power back two days ago, on Tuesday afternoon, after two weeks with no power. Back to civilization for them.

Last Saturday I went to volunteer at the community center at Brighton Beach, because I couldn’t just sit home and I figured I would help get some water and food to Coney Island buildings. There were National Guide troops, military vehicles and American Red Cross and hot food trucks all over Brighton and Coney Island. Coney Island does look better. Most buildings had power restored, just no heat.

Gas lines are getting much better, thankfully. I’ve never seen people filling up gas cans and giant bottles like last Friday in NJ. A little surreal.

Classes are getting back on track and I’m also tutoring so that is keeping me busy. Sometimes I do wonder how some students actually made it into college. Here is an email I got from a student today: “Hi prof. I was stumbling upon how to start off my paper. Like what should my thesis be?” headdesk.

In TV watching news: this season is probably the least TV I’m actually watching. I watch “Glee”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Grimm,” “Modern Family” and “A New Normal.” That’s it. This is very unusual for me. I am rewatching “Dollhouse” right now, which is very enjoyable. “Glee” is being hard on my heard right now – too much heartbreak on it. At least Chryed storyline on “Eastenders” got the happy ending today. I’m so relieved the characters are done on the show.

And a fun link: Fifty Shades of Chicken read by Patrick Stewart. Made me laugh a lot.

It's Election Day!

My parents are staying with me since Sunday night, since there is still no heat or power in their house. And they are not expecting it at least until Friday. So they went from extreme cold to extreme heat since in the last couple of day the heating in my apartment building was working overtime.

At least we finally solved the problem of a faulty bedroom heater that was pouring out steam and making our bedroom a sauna with wet walls and condensation. While we are waiting for super or whoever to come look at it, we just took the cover off and turned the heater off inside. It actually still gives off some heat and I even left the window a bit open this morning in both the living room and the bedroom. Finally today the inside temperature is just right and the walls are dry.

Bear left yesterday to his parents' house, so he could vote today, save gas a bit by going to work from his parents' house this week, since gas is still a problem in New York, and also not live in close crowded proximity to my parents making everyone a bit more comfortable. And while I miss him, I recognize the necessity of him being at his parents' house this week. Mostly for voting and saving gas.

Since my parents are here, we all drove our polling station in Staten Island this morning bright and early at 6:30. I'm very glad that the time charge happened this last Sunday, so that I can actually wake up at 6 without a problem. We went to vote and passed many houses that were flooded - lots of furniture and other garbage in front of the house. In my parents' community, more than half the cars were done and marked for hauling away.

I filled out my voting form (I miss the old lever machines). I did vote for one Republican - our state senator, but the rest were all Democratic, of course. Unfortunately, my father managed to convince my mother to vote Republican. Argh. Well, at least I could cancel our my Dad's vote. My voting form wouldn't scan in one of the machines, so I had to switch to another one. At least it worked out. Then, Papa dropped Mama back at their house for the day - to warm it up with gas and clean up more - and drove me to work. He drove me to work yesterday too, that part is pretty nice. For Local College, yesterday and tomorrow, I have to deal with subway changes because of the Hurricane so it is much easier to just carpool right now.

My students at University were very excited that the Writing Program cancelled final exams in order to adjust to the schedule, since we missed a week of classes. We will spend good time on the papers, though and I will have less time at the end to grade them. I wrote Assignment 4 this morning and we had good classes discussing Yoshino, our new reading about "covering."

It is a little weird to be in my apartment with my parents in the next room since this is my space. My Mom is cooking though, so I won't complain.

I'm going to try to catch up a bit on my blog and be more consistent at it. I just get tired at the end of the day and there are many other things I can do.

I did finish reading "Emma" and I am in the middle of Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall." My Dad gave it to me as a present so I'm reading it. I'm usually a bit wary of historical novels of English history since I know it a bit too well and the characters need to match to my view of them and not be too off and the time needs to feel authentic enough. And this book is pretty good - I'm not throwing it at the wall or anything. It is about Henry VIII divorce with Thomas Cromwell, a London lawyer, as the main character. My brain is being weird. It took me seeing Jane Seymour's name several times to stop for my brain confusing her with Jane Grey. My brain is clearly too tired.

In a proper grading tradition I woke up at 6 am to grade. I get a lot done that way actually. I so need a break – one week until Thanksgiving. Yay.

Class itself was good. We went over connections again. I hope they are learning. I wore my suit always makes me feel very professional.

Election day was today. Since it was a local election not many actually voted. Mama and I stopped by after work and we were 29 and 30 voter for our district. The election was for District Attorney (we were basically voted for the incumbent) and a local Judge (one guy across all parties). Still I’m glad I did the moral duty.

My brain was so dead that I watched “Glee” as a break. I watch it occasionally and I’m a sucker for boy romance.
