Part 4: Friends and get togethers and presents and awesomeness

I am mostly at home in the summer but I do have occasional outings and social events. After the musical on June 8, Bear and I took the train to his parents’ house and the next day, my parents came to visit. Since his parents came to my house in January, this was the return invite. I thought that it went pretty well. Bear took out archery stuff for the backyard, since I know my Mom likes to shoot things – and this was the first time she tried archery. We all also went into the local little village to see the scenery and then parents and I drove home.

Bear and I also spent the day in the city when we had to meet with the rabbi and the priest. We went to see “Prometheus” and walked around for maybe an hour and a half. We just missed the last UN tour. And for the first time ever I tried Korean food – I had a rice bowl. Very delicious. I want to be more adventurous with food.

And the last June outing was for Galya’s 1st birthday party in Central Park on June 23. I met Bear at the train station and we sat in the park for a bit before everyone else made it. (I always show up early and everyone else takes at least 45 minutes to an hour more. But I can’t help it and usually plan ahead.) We had a great picnic. Marianna had a great time opening Galya’s presents. I think the ball I got was hit and I hope Galya will enjoy her blocks.

And, of course, the fireworks and ice cream in the park listening to music was a great way to cap June.

Oh, and I also went strawberry picking with my parents. My Mom made a lot of preserves.

Other awesomeness of June was a fabulous author asking me if she could timestamp one of my Highlander stories for the upcoming fest. Very exciting!

Also I got “Sherlock Season 2” DVD from Medusa and “Arizona travel book” and “Perks of Being a Wallflower” from Bear’s parents for my birthday.

I was feeling blah all morning and I wasn’t sure I would even leave the house to go anywhere. But Bear called and reminded me how much I was looking forward to the movie and that I should stop moping. And around 1:30 I figured, why not. So I went to see “Beauty and the Beast in 3D.”

I’m not a fan of 3D that much. The landscapes looked really beautiful in 3D, though. And it was interesting to see a drawn 2D characters move in 3D – it was different than just a computer generated movie. But after a while 3D doesn’t really add much. I was just happy to see this movie on the big screen. I completely forgot the very violent ending to this movie where the Beast is stabbed pretty graphically and Gaston falls to his death. One of the girls watching the movie said upon Gaston’s death: “He deserved it because the Beast didn’t do anything wrong.” She was very adamant in that defense. But I really adore Belle out of all Disney princesses because she always stands up for herself (when he yells and rages, she doesn’t just accept it) and she loves books and the library is the best key to her heart. And they get to know each other a bit – it is not instant love.

Back to work tomorrow. I need to pack my bookbag. I teach in the afternoons now and I won’t be done until 6:20pm – it will be a long day.

Pretty ordinary day, which is a good thing. I read a bit more of Marco Polo and Silk Road and I watched the second episode of Russian Sherlock Holmes tv show which was really close to the “Study in Scarlet” book. Really great adaptation.

I also saw the first two episodes of “Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child” the very first Doctor Who that aired in 1963. I liked the first episode when Barbara and Ian, schoolteachers, first meet the Doctor. They were teaching Susan, the Doctor’s granddaughter, and got curious and concerned about her and her weirdness. I saw the pilot episode first and then the actual first episode, which was reshot in the first meeting with the Doctor. In the pilot Doctor was too strict and too serious and creepier and was kidnapping them. So I’m glad for the reshots. He is a little more like the Doctor them. The second episode was a little boring with the cavemen but I’ll see where it is going. I do like Barbara and Ian a lot. I really enjoyed watching the comedy sketches that came with the DVD.

I liked “Brothers and Sisters” episode and I thought it was a good goodbye to Holly but I’m not sure about the end with the old video of Nora. Are they setting up a new mystery? And what is going on with Kitty?

Poor little girl, Christina, who was killed yesterday in the Arizona shooting. I caught a phone interview with her mother on TV and it was so hard to just listen to that account and to imagine being that family.

Exercise: 30 minute walk. Today’s weather was very nice.

Cross-stitch: I finished the ducky body with light yellow and light orange and started on the bow around ducky’s neck with a really beautiful color of dark pink. Every Sunday I’m taking a picture of what the project looks like so I can assemble a string of pictures showing the progress. Because this project has a deadline I need to really keep at it.

I don’t go on the internet until after 6pm now and seeing the headline about Congresswoman Giffords being shot at a rally was startling. I hope she pulls through.

I’m glad I figured out last night what caused iTunes to get blank and I’m very happy that internet had the answers on how to fix it. I spent the morning transferring all my music from folders to the library and then I bought “Glasvegas.” It sucks that I lost all the play counts, and this was frustrating and annoying but at least I didn’t actually lose the music. And knowing why this happened actually helps a lot. I was very cranky last night.

More Sherlock Holmes today. I finished “A Study in Scarlet” and I watched the first of the Russian Sherlock Holmes TV movies “Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson” – well, one hour episode. These episodes were made from 1979 to 1986 and I grew up on them. I haven’t seen any in a while. When I think of the characters, these actors are who I always picture. The music from this show is really famous – it is quintessential Sherlock music to me. The first half was based on “Study in Scarlet” and their initial meeting and Watson being suspicious of what Holmes does. It was really funny, I don’t remember all this humor. Watson is adorable in this. The second half was based on a different case. Russian tv channel is going to run these on weekends so that should be fun. There are eleven episodes overall. The only one I vividly remember is “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

The book, “A Study in Scarlet,” was really fun to read. I didn’t realize that fully a third of it was not Watson narration but the background to the murder and the motivation for the killer. I love the language of it – nineteenth century English literature does have such a lovely prose. When we first meet Holmes he a little more geeky than I expected. I don’t know when I will read the rest with my busy semester but I certainly want to read more.

This afternoon I proofed my Harry Potter story so I could post it tonight (just when it was January 9 in England, since I wrote it for Snape’s birthday, and yes, I know just how geeky that is). When I decided in December that this year I want to do more writing and do one story a month, I wanted to do a Snape story for January because of the birthday. And then I remembered the Christmas conversation between Lupin and Harry in Book 6 where Lupin defends Snape to Harry and mention that they might not be friends but he still trust him. So I wanted to write a story with Lupin and Snape and maybe get them to be friends a little bit. And then I started writing it in the last week of December and I wrote it from Lupin’s perspective. So it ended up more a story about Lupin. And it flowed really well since I kept hearing in my head all the things they would talk about. I finished it right before the new year. Now, for February, I will try a Janeway/Chakotay story since I love them and February calls for romance.

One of my friends has an Etsy shop where she sells the jewelry she makes. She makes these beautiful pearl bracelets of different colors for a cancer charity. I bought one for Bear’s Mom a while ago. I’m going to buy one this year in deep purple color in honor of my dad.

Exercise: 30 minute walk with nice falling snow
Cross-stitch: orange, blue and yellow – I love different colors.
