Teaching went well today. We did sample paragraphs. It went really well, I think. At least they worked on it and everything and mostly paid attention. I still have four more papers to grade. How did I do 40 papers per cycle five years ago? My attention span has lessened.
Some links for today:

1. What people in US actually know about religion:

USAToday article and the US Religious Knowledge Survey . Not surprisingly more educated and minority religions know more about other religion and even their own religious doctrines.

2. Census taken in the recession on various social practices like marriage.

3. Article on whether Colbert’s testimony was ‘bad’ for Congress or actually helped the cause.
The article pointed out how the testimony actually raised publicity for real experts. Daily Show did a nice segment on this too.

I was catching up a little on “the Daily Show” – their website really has buffering problems – I really miss having it on Hulu.

Tonight was also about 90s music nostalgia apparently – I somehow missed uploading my old 90s CD into iTunes and so now I’m listening to Boyz II Men, TLC and 1996 Grammy nominees. It all started because I wanted to hear Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” and I knew I had it on CD but not on my iPod. Oh, the 90s – my teenage years. But this music is really for one night listening, a lot of it is pretty dated.

I have a big headache, mostly ‘I’m tired and stared at the computer too much’ headache where if I have any lights or sounds around me I will throw up. It is not a migraine exactly, since it is all frontal lobe but I’m just going to bed early. Advil and an ice-pack and sleep should help.

Today resulted in a monster headache from staring at computer and TV. I barely sat through “House,” because otherwise I would have to wait a week for the episode to pop up on Hulu and then with Advil and an ice-pack on my head I went into my dark quiet room to avoid all possible stimulation to my brain. It was not a migraine, just full frontal lobe revenge for modern technology and my addiction to it.

I still woke up with a really heavy head from all the adventure yesterday. In the morning, I was determined to still make it to Marianna’s gathering but about 11:30 it became apparent that I should stay home and I’m in no shape to go anywhere. I really need to be OK tomorrow for teaching and next week for writing and that means rest today. My headache is occasionally a migraine headache and sometimes just feels like someone is squeezing my head. Palpitations last night did not help.

Despite my heavy head, Bear and I still managed to have a decent day together. We hung out, watched “Friday the 13th” in the spirit of Halloween (and in the special features the writer pretty much admitted that he copied “Halloween”). It was a pretty decent scary movie, although the inability of any victim to do anything but scream was annoying. We also managed a small 15-20 minute walk and Bear practiced a little Russian with one of my children’s book. I even introduced him to “Dexter.” Now, I will just get an extra long sleep and hopefully my head will feel better and I can teach tomorrow and get through the day. And I need to stop over thinking it all.

I slept in, in the morning, while my parents went to Brooklyn. Instead I ate my breakfast (I made English muffin with egg and cheese) and watched Bill Maher show of nice funny political discussion.

I started the next Hebrew Chapter on plurals. Things are getting complicated and I can’t go fast if I want to absorb it properly. I got plurals in consonant well, but the vowels confuse me since most nouns have their own pattern. I guess I just need more practice.

I left the house at 4:30 because I was meeting Bear in the city for the opera. We met up in the Columbus Circle around 6:30 and had dinner at WholeFoods. Bear had Indian and I had sushi. I also made a mistake, seeing it retroactively, and got a big cup of green tea. Caffeine and I don’t always mix well and I think caffeine was the trigger here. It was also raining like crazy, sheets and sheets of rain and that might have been a trigger too. By 8pm when we got to the Met to see “Barber of Seville,” my favorite comedy opera, I had a slight headache that kept growing throughout the evening. At first I thought it was because of the rain but it wouldn’t go away and I didn’t feel that great. But I managed to enjoy the opera because it has fantastic physical comedy and it is really funny and the music and arias are great. I don’t think Bear is much of an opera fan because he doesn’t like subtitles usually and he decided that he prefers musicals. But still, we had fun. By the time we headed to my house around midnight, my headache refused to go away and just got heavy. By the time we got home I was thinking that my blood pressure was probably up. When I measured it, it read 150/106 which slightly freaked me out. It took a little while, maybe 20 minutes for it to go down to normal level, and that did not help my headache, which during the night turned into a migraine. Maybe it was a migraine all along. Because of all the worry and probably the caffeine my palpitations started to act up and get really loud, which did not help getting a good night sleep. I still had a good Saturday overall, but the last part of the night was a little stressful. No green tea with caffeine for me ever.
