We went to Long Island for the weekend. We drove in early yesterday morning and just got back about an hour and a half ago. It was a really fun October/Halloween type weekend. When we got in, we almost immediately drove to the local library with Bear's Mom since there was a little farm animal exhibition in the courtyard. It wasn't very large. Some goats, ducks, bunny, 2 pigs and 2 chickens. Tanya watched them but she really didn't want to pet any of them - she's been cautious lately. She does pet the cat at Bear's parents's house but not the farm ones. She did look at the ducks for a while. But mostly she just wanted to run around the grass and the nice courtyard grounds.

In the afternoon, Bear, Tanya, I, Carrie (Bear's sister) and Bear's Mom all drove out to the pumpkin patch to get some pumpkins. Tanya got very excited as she loves pumpkins. She constantly plays with our pumpkin decorations. And when she was the field full of pumpkins she got a super excited look on her face and even flailed her arms. She ran around, tried to pick many up and generally had lots of fun. We ended up picking up 6 small pumpkins and Bear's Mom got a big one. We wanted to paint them at home so got enough for everyone. We will eat them later after Halloween. Tanya also had fun picking up little gourds.

When we got home, I put an apron on her and a bandana in her hair and we let her try paints for the first time as we painted pumpkins. That was so much fun. She didn't get paint over herself that much. She learned to put the paintbrush in water and wanted to wipe the brush with a rag herself when trying different colors. She looked like a hippie painter - it was really awesome. Painting is not something I want to do at home yet - too messy - but it was great at grandma's.

Tonight Carrie got her a little witch mask at a dollar store to try one. We all pretended to be scared when Tanya put the mask on which she found hilarious. And she liked to run at the mirror to see the mask. Bear just liked putting her Darth Vader mask on so he could say, "Tanya, I am your father." So good visit. I even got some grading done and watched more Luke Cage and Flash Season 2 and read my book.

Over this weekend I ended up reading two wonderful articles from the New Yorker . The first one was about Ursula Le Guin and her life. I read two of her books (Left Hand of Darkness and Lavinia ) and I want to read more but she's not my favorite writer, although I loved Left Hand of Darkness. I feel her writing stays with you. But it is a little two philosophical for me. Still, she's amazing in many ways and it was really interesting to read about her life, her family and her writing process.

The second article was about Leonard Cohen. I read it today. Thoroughly. Not skimming anything, taking in every word. He is one of my favorite musicians. His work is poetry to me. (Incidentally, I was surprised but very pleased with Bob Dylan winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. I think it's really cool. And this article interviews Dylan too). Many compared Cohen's songs to prayer and I tend to agree. I rarely go to concerts but I went to his in spring of 2013 and it was so wonderful. He was so impressive and wonderful live. And this article was so well written. I made me tear up at one point when I was reading the email he wrote to his dying friend. Just a gorgeous article.

Two wonderful articles:

1. One on Leonard Cohen

2. One on Ursula Le Guin

Book Meme
15. The book that you reread over and over again and get new things from every time

I don't really reread books. I guess Harry Potter comes the closest as I notice new details. Oh, and Shakespeare. If I reread a play or see one I already read, I definitely get new things out of it. I think when we reread books, new things are inevitable, especially if we read them at different ages.

16. The book that you don’t dare reread for fear it won’t be the same any more

I'm not sure. There are movies I don't want to see because I loved the book so much but I can't think of a book that I don't dare reread, mostly because I don't usually reread book very much. I guess Mary Stewart's Merlin books since I loved them so much and they were such an essential influence. I was thinking about rereading them but I am a little afraid, I guess, so they don't disappoint.

We just got back from visiting Marianna and her family today. Marianna's birthday was on October 7th and we all finally got our schedule aligned. We didn't do anything complicated. Bear, Tanya and I drove to Queens to Marianna's place and Yeva came too a bit later. We told her 1pm, so she showed up by 3:30pm. Real time was about 2pm. We played a little inside with Galya, who is 4, and Idalia, who is 15 months - two days younger than Tanya. And then around 4pm we walked to this Himalayan/Nepalese restaurant, which was a lot like Asian fusion.

The food was good and there weren't a lot of people there so we didn't have to worry about toddler/little kids disrupting other diners. And all the kids were pretty well behaved. Tanya actually was willing to eat and had lots of rice, some tofu from miso soup, and a steamed chicken dumpling. She's been really picky lately about eating - it's a struggle to get her to eat sometimes, so it was nice for her to participate. And I got some time to eat too. We had some chicken and beef dumplings for the table, and bok choi, and I got miso soup, their special bread and crispy noodles with chicken. The noodles were ok, but their dumplings were very delicious.

Last week was stressful. We were thinking lately of buying an apartment instead of renting, with some help from my parents. Last Saturday (on Halloween) one realtor called to show us a two bedroom in his co-op. The size was OK and the kitchen was a good size, but the place would have needed so much renovation. Practically everything. We thought back and forth all week, weighting pros and cons and ultimately decided against it since the flip tax (what you pay into the co-op if you sell) was too big and there is no sublet there either - so if something happened it would not be easy to sell. In the last three years, real estate prices went up - but we will just have to keep looking. One good thing from all the stress of thinking about everything, I called my landlord office to find out if we could break our lease if we had too and they are pretty easy going about it. So, a lot of being an adult this week.

On Halloween, we also dressed up at home - Tanya was the cutest cat, I was a witch (my usual get-up) and Bear was Freddy Kruger. We also played some Halloween music on the radio which Tanya was grooving to. She is too young to trick and treat yet, but I'm looking forward to that in a few years. (I don't share pics on social media but I have no problem emailing them to people on my friends list - so if anyone wants pics, just ask)

I'm going to do a list since that seems to be the easiest way to catch up. So here are my October highlights

• Medusa visiting - I haven't seen her in person in about two years so it was really awesome that she moved much closer to New York and could come visit. We watched silly TV and it was like no time has passed. Great Columbus Day weekend.

• Marianna’s bday - and Adama's too. He turned 40 while Marianna turned 32 and we celebrate at the Indian buffet in Queens we all like. Bear and I took the subway there and had a nice monthly friend gathering. Yeva, Janna and I got them a joint massage gift certificate as a present.

• Battling a cold – now a fun highlight but I did have a big cold for like half the month, I even stayed with my parents one night so I wouldn't have to take the train with the cold when my carpool person was on little vacation. I'm better now but that was not fun.

• Grading and grading and folder review - I did another marathon grading session before my folder review. The review itself went well. But now that I live with Bear, I can't go to sleep at 12 and wake up at 6 to grade. I even slept in the living room so I could let him sleep more. So I need to actually break down my grading so that I could go to sleep like a normal person at these times.

• Ikea and Coney Island Halloween of Horror - October 20th and 21st was a really great weekend. First Bear and I went to IKEA to pick up a living room lamp and a side table (and we ended up with $100 worth of little things). We went to the Brooklyn IKEA in Red Hook, right next to a community farm with a Halloween Fest, so we picked up a little pumpkin for Bear to carve. He later made a vampire face. And in the evening we went to Luna Park in Coney Island for their Halloween of Horror evening. We got discount tickets from LivingSocial. I loved the haunted houses/mazes while Bear loved the rides. I just went on a baby coaster and mild rides - I'm not a fan of rides and turn you upside down. I did cheer Bear on with a cup of hot cider.

• Pea soup and tuna-pasta casserole and cleaning and awesomeness of domesticity - The other great part of that great October weekend was just being at home and cooking and cleaning. I made a pea soup with beef - a first for me, and it came out great. It was just a very relaxing day. Bear and I made the casserole together and cleaned together too and even the chores were fun to do together.

• “Emma” - I finally finished it. I do like Mr. Knighley quite a lot, maybe even more than Mr. Darcy (blasphemy, I know). He is just so practical and says what he means and I love that quality in a person. And I love his relationship with Emma.

• RS Games - October was the posting month and fairy-tales and legends was just a great theme. And the mods are putting together an ebook, which is going to be like 1000 pages. Pure awesomeness.

• Hurricane Sandy - of course, all our plans for the end of October went out of the way because of Sandy. Bear and I did get an unexpected week at home with no work but it wasn't like a vacation or anything. We went to see my grandparents a few times - they are ok, they just don't have an elevator, heat or phone right now, but their home attendants do check on them and bring them food. We did go grocery shopping for them and Coney Island is getting a bit better and less apocalyptic looking. Going to their building last Wednesday was a bit scary.

• Halloween - since we couldn't really have a proper Halloween and I couldn't go out like I originally planned, Bear and I had a mini-halloween by getting some candy, having the pumpkin and watching "Halloween" on DVD. It is actually the first movie we ever watched together, in that one week in the beginning of college where we were just friends before we started dating. It is once of Bears favorite movies and maybe six years ago, when it was briefly in movie theaters for Halloween, I made sure to get tickets. It was really great to watch it on the big screen.

Happy Halloween! I saw many kids out trick-or-treating today with some fun costumes – my favorite was a kid covered in all blue. We gave out a bit of candy too.

But it was a long workday for me as every Monday is. I have an access to a copy machine on Monday so I do most of copying or other grunt work on Mondays since I’m in my office from 8:30 to 12. And then I have two classes back to back from 1 to 4:10. And I did reading for those classes in the evening.

I also wrote Exam 2 for my law class (which I gave today) , graded In-Class Exercise 2 for one history classes and commented on bibliography for another, started re-reading “El Cid” for the discussion class on Wednesday and read law sources and book for Wednesday too. I did take a few breaks during the day (and I showed the movie "El Cid" for 25 minutes in one class) but it feels like I’ve been working all day. I just want to read “The Hobbit” before I go to sleep if I’m awake enough for it.

One weird thing today: so one of my Global History students asked for a paper extension for Paper 1 a month ago for just one class session, but since then he kept avoiding turning it in though lots of bullshit excuses mostly involving email not working or cooperating. Finally, finally today he brought a paper copy, like I told him too. When he showed it to me right before the lecture (in the classroom with other students gathering) he was enthusiastic and asked for a hug. Which threw me off and I didn’t exactly respond since a) I rarely hug people unless I haven’t seen them for a while and mostly really close family members/friends, except for Bear who I hug all the time, understandable and b) he is a student in college and not in kindergarden and c) I never hug students. But he came over and asked again and did hug me. Now the hug itself was not creepy – it was an appropriate length and everything; it was just something I would never do and I wish I knew how to or, had time to respond properly, to not hug. I did focus on his second paper right away and told him to make sure he had it on time and got in a serious teacher mode, which threw him off a bit. But seriously, dude, don’t hug your professors. And he would never have done that if I’ve been a guy. It doesn’t bother me on physical level, again it was not a creepy hug and I’m not really going to dwell on it after I write this but it was just not right.

Happy Halloween! My first Halloween was when I was 13 and my friend told me about this amazing holiday. (I just moved to America six month before and we dressed up in costume for New Year). She convinced me to go trick-o-treating and I made my own costume. Since then it became one of my favorite holidays and I have good memories of this day. This year I was determined to do a lot of Halloweeny stuff.

So today I convinced Bear, who was a bit reluctant to do this, to dress up in costumes and go visit his 93 year old grandmother in her nursing home in costume. I was Catwoman (since I had the mask and the whip from a Halloween party seven years ago) and Bear was Batman. Bear is certainly much shyer than me, but I persuaded him since – hey, mask. We were a hit. We put some smiles on people’s faces and I hope we cheered people up a bit. His grandma certainly enjoyed it. I was happy to dress up even for a bit; I do like being silly.

“Love Hurts” by Jim Butcher – short story printed in “Side Jobs.” This and “Aftermath” are the only stories/novellas in Dresden Files in this recent short story collection that I haven’t read yet. Bear got the book on Tuesday and now it is my turn. I really like that in Dresden Files Harry and Murphy never really got together. They acknowledged the attraction that grew as they became friends and then best friends but they were always very grown up about it. They talked it over in book 8, I think, and decided that it would just end badly if they got together for many complicated reasons and they should just stay friends. While the possibility is always there, Harry’s reactions to Murphy muted too over the years – in one of the latest books when Kincaid was hurt and Murphy was worried, Harry was concerned but not really jealous. This story again points out and reinforces that the characters think a relationship between them would be a bad idea. But, at least, because of the spell they get to have a little happiness and some kissing. But they know it wouldn’t last and while they love each other, it is not the kind of love Harry had with Susan. It can be, if they actually get together, it certainly has potential. Murphy is awesome and Butcher is actually great on strong female characters. I’m just really happy that in this series people’s relationships and interactions feel very realistic and adults are allowed to have adult choices and that most people don’t get a happily ever after – those that do have to earn it.

So Halloween Saturday:

The major plan today was to carve pumpkins. So in the afternoon we drove to a pumpkin patch to get some pumpkins. On the way there we stopped at this awesome bagel store where I got a cranberry muffin. I was very hungry since it was past my lunch time so the muffin was a necessity. Also, it was delicious. Bear wanted to go to this pumpkin patch because it advertised its corn maze. The corn maze was not that impressive and it shouldn’t have cost $3 but we managed to have fun with it by running around like crazy kids and trying to hide and chase each other. The weather was certainly chilly and very fall like this weekend so it was fun to run around. The pumpkin patch itself was ok, it was really just a field where people drove up pumpkins too and put them there – but I did like walking around trying to find the right pumpkin. I got a small one for $4.

This was only my second time carving pumpkins ever (Bear and I carved pumpkins three years ago) and it was fun. I tried carving a traditional pumpkin scary face with bear ears. I don’t know about the end result but I liked the process. Bear likes to carve much bigger faces – I have no artistic talent whatsoever (that is why I love cross-stitch, it is just following directions), so he much better than me at this stuff. My pumpkin just looks sad. The most amusing thing about carving pumpkins this year was Katie, Bear’s parents little kitty. She is eight month old or so and very feisty. (She really liked a little stuffed bear I gave her and kept jumping around with it. Yes, bears are a theme with me.) Katie was very curious about the whole pumpkin thing; she was fascinated. She jumped on the chair by the table and was watching me pretty closely. She kept putting her little paws on the table and we kept telling her to put the paws down. Which she did. But she continued to look intently at what we were doing. It was very amusing. (In the morning, when I turned around to pour myself some tea, she jumped on the high counter chair and stole a piece of my bagel with cheese when my back was turned. Feisty.)

In the evening, Bear and I went to hang out with his best friend and we all went to a thai place. It was very delicious, I got a seafood curry. Nicely spiced. Then we went back to the friend’s new apartment and hung out there for a bit. We originally planned to check out a haunted house, but his friend really need to be social for a bit so we just stayed in. It is a nice one bedroom apartment that he lives in with his fiancée and they have a dog, a cat and several geckos. I had to get used to the dog but he was just all bark, he stayed away for the most part. (I have a phobia of dogs which got a bit better over the years, but I do need to get used to individual dogs to be in their company and they can’t jump on me in any way.) We watched some documentary TV like “Lockup” about prison and juvenile system. It just really made me feel sad for the kids in the system.

I haven’t posted in two days because I saw them as pretty much lost days since I got obsessed with a new awesome fanfic site I found on Tuesday. It is all about Adama/Roslin, my new mushy obsession. (It doesn’t help that they are the cutest thing ever) Argh! This is why it is so dangerous for me to read fanfic, I let it take over my world because it is so nice and comfy. And I can’t just read for an hour or two, I need to devour and skim as much as possible. I recognize a pattern in myself. Since last Saturday when I had my headache/blood pressure spike and then followed by a week of heavy palpitations, I get down and depressed and fanfic is like comfort food. So I binge. Which then feeds the depression and it makes me feel terrible and fogs my head. And I recognize this but I still have a hard time stopping myself. I need to really tell myself, enough, go cold turkey again and clear my head. I had such a nice 38 days and it felt good to have focus, I need to remember this. I’m cutting myself off, again. This needs to stick. I feel like I need to come up with a reward system, perhaps, of some kind. And not resort to comfort reading when my palpitations get bad.

I did finally feel well enough (and it wasn’t raining) to go for a nice walk yesterday and today. Yesterday was Halloween (and Change of Time day, so it was an extra hour, it felt like). I saw a lot of little kids in cute costumes and some adults too. And we didn’t have many visitors for candy so we have lots of candy left over. Yay. Halloween has always been a fun holiday. I have three clear memories of Halloween in my sixteen years in America. (not to mention other Halloween’s like visiting College for the first time on Halloween) My first Halloween was when I was thirteen years old and had no idea what it was about. It was a Sunday and my ten year old friend, Vera, who lived on my block told me all about it and persuaded her parents to let us go trick-or-treating in the afternoon. Her parents, figuring I was older, let us do that, although her grandfather did trail us a half a block away. I didn’t have much money, much less money to buy a costume, so I made my own. I had these bright orange stockings, and a puffy white jacket. I made a cone hat and painted by cheeks red - I guess I was going for a silly clown. Vera got dressed as a gypsy. It was pretty cold but we had lots of fun and went door to door and got lots and lots of candy. It was pretty amazing for an introduction to this weird holiday. (when I was little we wore costumes for New Year kid parties only) The next clear Halloween memory was when I was fifteen and boyfriend and I went trick-and-treating in the evening. I don’t think I wore a costume, just my leather jacket and but he wore a Klingon mask. He was at least six feet tall at the time too, so I imagine the people who opened to door for us weren’t exactly comfortable. That added to our teenage amusement. The third Halloween memory is of couple of years ago. Bear picked me up for a Halloween themed weekend in LI. We met up with his friends and went to a pumpkin museum, which had lots and lots of unusual carvings and displays and the weather was nice and cool and very Octobery, and rainy. It was great. We then went to a haunted firehouse which was amazing. Not too scary, just one guy lunging with a chainsaw made me jump. We had to wait more than an hour to get in, but it was so worth it. The rooms were very elaborate and fancy. The next day Bear and I got pumpkins at this farm place and went back to his house to carve them. It was the first time (and only time) I carved a pumpkin. It was great, although his pumpkin was scarier than mine. But then Bear is an artist and has hand/eye coordination. That was a great Halloween weekend. Oh, I’m just remembering another amazing Halloween a year before. First, I got tickets to the original “Halloween” movie screening, it was one night only, and I knew how much Bear loves that movie. So Bear picked me up after teaching and off we went. We had Chinese food in the car and then saw it in the full movie theater of fans. (“Halloween” is actually the first movie we saw together, a few days before we were officially dating. I came over to his dorm room and he introduced me to it) The next day we had a Halloween party at my friend’s house. I was a sexy witch and Bear was Darth Vader. Tons of fun.

This is too cute.
