May. 20th, 2013 10:10 pmMy semester officially ended on Friday when I turned in the final grades for Local College. My writing classes in University were done on May 8th, so for the last week and a half it was all history papers and final exams.
I did get a bizarre email today from someone who wants me to change this one's student grade from a C to C+ to a B in one of my history classes so he could get this summer internship because the young man has potential and needs 2.5 GPA to be considered. He is an athlete and has been 'trying hard.' And maybe I can give him some extra credit. Yeah. How about working hard during the semester. This guy is lucky enough to get a C. His papers were terrible. He wrote about not believing in dinosaurs in a paper addressing the reliability of Tacitus.
As usual, the end of the semester is a bit anticlimactic. I'm pretty much tired, since I don't really get to have weekends during a semester: there is so much work and grading. But at the same time I feel I should be doing something and it is really weird to not have grading anymore or work deadlines. I did clean out my desk today and that felt very nice. I am taking a couple of weeks to breathe but I am looking for an internship, or temp job or something this summer. At the very least I'm going to volunteer. But next couple of week, I'm looking forward to sleep. Weekends in June will be busy with lots of birthdays and baby shower and I need to get all the presents set for that.
Bear has the last couple of weeks of weird schedules on his job. He ends pretty late so he usually stays over his parents' house from Tuesday to Saturday. And he will miss my birthday in two weeks. But after that he is on regular schedule again and I'm looking forward to that. We did get to have a very nice weekend - well Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon that he had off. I made meatballs (new recipe I found online), my fancy rice with mushrooms and eggplant. And yesterday we went to see "Star Trek."
I really enjoyed to movie. I heard that some liked the action but didn't think much of the plot so I didn't have many expectations but I ended up really having fun and I didn't mind the plot at all. Sure it was pretty predictable and I knew what was coming before it happened but it was entertaining.
I purposely avoided reading anything or watching clips of the movie since I wanted to be unspoiled. Somehow I still knew Benedict Cumberbatch was Khan and the reversal death scene of second movie between Spock and Kirk. I think through internet osmosis. But I didn't mind it at all. I actually like the idea that even in alternate universes some things are just meant to happen. The only plot problem I had was in the beginning where Spock landed on a rock in the middle of a volcano, and not in the volcano, because, of course. I really liked Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan (it doesn't hurt that I love his voice and can't wait to hear it as the dragon in the Hobbit) and the "Doctor Who" nerd in me was thrilled to see Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith) in a major movie. And the reference to Section 31 was neat. I also really enjoyed the banter and the characters were really their characters. I wish there was more interaction between women but Uhura was a least competent and good at her job and Carol Marcus got to disarm a torpedo. So I definitely had a good time and so did Bear. And the trekkie in me is thrilled to be in this universe again. It is my first fandom after all.
