TV in 2019

I think 2019 was a pretty good year in TV. I didn't watch that many network shows in real time: 3 dramas (Supernatural, Flash and Supergirl) and 2 comedies (Modern Family and Good Place). Three of those are coming to an end this spring, which is probably a good thing. I do prefer having the whole series at once rather than watching one week at a time.

Most of my other shows I saw on Netflix, or PBS or ask my Dad to procure them from some Russian sites the provenance of which I do not ask about.

I also saw a lot of comedy specials this year - Ali Wong was my favorite.

My favorite shows this year were "After Life", "The Crown Season 3", Good Omens and Chernobyl.

Doctor Who S11 was a lot of fun too and so was Star Trek Discovery S2. And I really loved "The Witcher" too, although I finished it in 2020.

Orange in the New Black S7, Stranger Things 3 and Agents of Shield S6 were enjoyable to watch. "Letdown" was pretty amusing.

I was disappointed with American Gods S2. But overall a pretty good TV year.

I actually recorded all of the TV shows I watched this year in a Word document. So far, 222 hours of full hour shows, and 63 half-hour comedies. I don't think there is much TV left to watch in 2016; maybe one more episode of "Modern Family" and some Christmas specials. I also watched some award shows, usually some pieces of it as I was doing other things, and I caught Olympics when I could. And there were a few documentaries like "Hamilton's America" on PBS.

I am going to break down my TV shows. Out of those 222 full hour shows, I only watched 1 - the season finale of "Supernatural" - in real time. I watch everything later, usually the same week it airs on the computer or on the tablet. Or I just watch it on Netflix at my own pace. It was strange during the Olympics to actually turn the TV on and watch as something aired.

Looking at the show breakdown I think my favorite discovery and show I enjoyed most this year was "Flash."

4 – Do you have a "muse" character, that speaks to you more than others, or that tries to push their way in, even when the fic isn't about them? Who are they, and why did that character became your muse?

Not really. I tend to write Remus and his POV more than anyone else but I'm not sure if he qualifies as a muse.

I wanted to try some new (for me) shows yesterday evening just to see if there was anything new I could watch. So I just looked at what was on Netflix. I heard some good things about "100" so I tried that. I lasted 15 minutes, maybe 10. It probably gets better but the dialogue was pretty terrible, I couldn't buy the premise and I was not really interested in watching the show about teenagers who were all very CW. I was just bored and the overacting and character types made me roll my eyes a lot. I tried "The Fosters" next and I did like the Pilot and I can see why people really like the show but again I'm not sure I can watch it since I'm really not interested in teenage drama. (Even for my favorite shows like Buffy or Glee, I always like the seasons where the characters are out of high school more.). I want the Fall TV season to start already. But Supernatural and Grimm are coming back only in October.

I'm very sleep deprived at the moment because since right after Thanksgiving Tanya entered a lovely stage called 4 month sleep regression. Basically, she wakes up every hour or two at night, asking for pacifier which is not something she used to do. Occasionally she can manage three hours at a time. So while I do sleep, my sleep is very broken. It should pass soon, according to all the books. She is starting with REM sleep so she is learning how to fall asleep on her own. Meanwhile, I'm just very grateful I don't go back to work until Jan 20th, so I can be a zombie.

But this also basically means that her brain is progressing nicely. She is rolling over all over the place now and can drag herself around on her gym and play mat and she is trying to sit up.

I'm almost done with my Harry Potter reread. I have so many books on my wish list that are coming out next year. I don't watch a lot of TV anymore, so I do want to read more.

It's weird but even a few years ago I had so many shows I was watching on TV.
Now I'm just watching 'Supernatural', 'Grimm' and 'Modern Family' in regular season. In January I will also add 'Glee' and 'Downton Abbey' to the roster, with 'Teen Wolf' in the summer. That's pretry much it. I tried 'Marco Polo' on Netflix but found the first episode boring. I did like the casting at least. Still, it is weird for me not to have TV nights anymore. I watch everything after the fact online or onDemand. Oh, I did watch Season 8 of ' Doctor Who', I liked it much more that Eleven seasons.

Belarus got two medals! One silver and one bronze for biathlon. That is very cool. (I usually root for US, Belarus and Russia in that order, although sometimes there are variations – like the Chinese team in pair figure skating)

Ice-dancing compulsory. I did like the tango music but I hoped more would treat it as a tango and look each other in the eye. The Russian pair that was in first place after the compulsory did an excellent job at actual tango, they oozed sex appeal and they danced with speed and precision. Others were OK but the judging was actually right on the money to my untrained eye. Brother/sister British pair was just uncomfortable to watch since they had to dance a tango and pretend to be into each other. Why are there so many sibling pairs in ice-dancing? According to some articles there are four. American girls both have really squeaky voices.

Finally after years of paperwork hiding in obscurity in my books, I filled out the claims form from class action lawsuit against BA and Virgin Atlantic for conspiracy to hike up fuel changes from 2004 to 2006. As I flew to England a few times in 2005 I got a claim form awhile ago but was putting it off and I relegated it to one of my history books. I found the claim form today when I took that book out and I realized I could just do that online. Luckily the deadline is not until 2012 so maybe I’ll get a few bucks from this. We’ll see.

Looking at network intel on the TV pilots for next year, there will be absolutely nothing intriguing. The networks are mostly ordering procedurals with cops, lawyers and doctors. Nothing at all stands out, especially in drama. Which is probably the good thing since I really don’t need any new TV shows to watch, and I can catch up with some old ones on DVD.
