Happy b-day, Vika!

I got my new passport yesterday and today my old passport came back too, all useless except to see my pretty traveling stamps. The new picture was stapled to the old passport too and it was a little jarring seeing my old 19 year old self together with my 29 year old self. When did I became an adult? I’ve been feeling like an adult more and more this year, maybe it is approaching 30 that feels serious, but still. When did this happen?

Had a meeting with the Advisor today. I came up with a plan to get my butt in gear and I needed an authority to reinforce it. It is a new non-negotiable, not-flexible deadlines plan. I made a list of when I want each chapter to get done. It is all very practical and doable, assuming I don’t slack off, so I’m hoping to start a new loop and keep some pressure on me, which worked in the past. First deadline, November 2. I’ve been sitting on this chapter for a while and it is time to put it to bed. It is the same chapter where my conference paper is coming from. But this plan and the whole advisor meeting made me happy, I felt like myself. Bubbly and studious.

Numbers WTF moment of the day: chapters 26-30 start with a new census. In the beginning of the journey, not counting Levites the census number was 603,550. Now it is 601,730. That is only counting males over certain age and not Levites. But none of these numbers is supposedly any of the people, except a few, who were counted in Mt. Sinai (since God promised all adults that they won’t reach the actual promised land). Did so many years pass already that they almost rebuilt the numbers? There was probably nothing to do in the desert but procreate. Chapter 27 deals with some inheritance laws. It was nice of God to give inheritance to the daughters of a guy who had no sons. In this chapter, Moses also is told to go up on a mountain to get a glimpse of the promised land before his death. Moses’ aide Joshua will become the leader. Then there are lists of more offerings, mostly listing the animals. All that ritual, good thing we don’t have to kill so many animals anymore. And the last chapter is all about how a father or husband can nullify a woman’s vows. I’m so happy to live in modern Western Civilization were at least we try for the whole equality thing. At least as a widow or a divorcee a woman’s word and oath is treated as a man’s.
