A Note (June 7, 2010): In the airport, on May 19, I bought a little notebook so that I would keep a journal of my Minsk vacation and every night, until I got back to New York, I wrote about my day. So all the blog entries from May 19 to June 4 are transcriptions from my traveling journal (with some elaboration if I feel something needs explanation). I discovered there was a difference in writing about my day by hand and typing about it.

Today is a traveling day so pretty much the whole day we were in readiness. We only left the house at 2:30pm. I had to wash my hair, shave my legs, do a pedicure with red paint and a manicure too. That took some time in the morning. I watched NPH’s episode of “Glee” as I got all girly – I normally don’t like “Glee” that much but this was NPH and Joss Whedon directed it. It was amusing enough when I only had to sort of pay attention to it and was focused on something else.

I also posted my story online. I don’t normally write Remus stories but this one just got in my head.

At 2:30 the taxi van came and we were off. We were ready before that and sat on the steps in the fine Russian tradition. No traffic. I had to go through security twice because customs didn’t like Mama’s propolis (bee thing, like honey but not really). Luckily, Mama’s friend was flying with us and her son worked at the airport. So I went out to give him the propolis and then had to wait in a long long line to clear security again.

Then it was a wait at the gate and duty-free area where I bought “Time” magazine because of the cover story on three women that are highly influencial in US financial policy called “The New Sheriffs of Wall Street.” I also bought “National Geographic” for later reading. And I bought this little notebook with New York City on the cover. And I ate a delicious panini sandwich.

The boarding was a little late and by the time we got on the plane we got delayed again by JFK. The Aeroflot was nice enough to turn on our individual entertainment system while we waited and gave us drinks.

I watched “Avatar” because I figured that way I won’t have to pay for it. I knew the story was idiotic and that knowledge helped me tolerate the movie. This is definitely a movie for a big screen where the visuals would distract from a crappy story. On the small screen the stupidity of it all shines through. And the movie was way too long. I actually liked Sam Worthington more here than in “Terminator 4” but the clichés and the plot is made for mockage. Especially General Evil McEvil had to be super evil and gleeful as he wanted to destroy all nature. Why was this movie even nominated for Best Picture? At least now when I tell people I didn’t like it, I actually speak from experience. Sigourney Weaver was cool in the movie and Na’vi girls had good roles in the tribe, so at least that was a bit of a plus. But overall, the movie bored me.

We finally lifted off at 9 pm, two hours behind our original schedule so we were a bit worried about making our connection the next day. They fed us a nice dinner (beef) with desert. I tried to nap a bit but I’m not big on sleeping on planes. Nine hours is a long ride, though. We were flying close to Iceland, above Scotland, through Norway and Sweden- and that was kind of cool. I really love the map feature with the flight route on the entertainment system.
