This weekend was super cold so we didn't venture out. At 7F (-14C), as high, we didn't even take Tanya to her dance class. Instead it was a nice quiet weekend at home.

I made meatloaf on Saturday from ground beef. I prefer turkey but it was in my freezer and I needed to use it. Because there was 2 lb of ground beef, I used half on meatloaf on Saturday and made the rest into wontons on Sunday to put in the freezer for later meals. I also made soup for the girls on Sunday morning (we gave Olivia 1oz of that soup, with chicken in it, yesterday for the first time), and some elbow pasta in the afternoon. It was very nice to cook after so long.

Bear and I also managed to watch Wonder Woman in two evenings. I liked it. It wasn't the best movie ever but definitely best DC one. The plot was a lot tighter than many othet DC movies. Kid Diana was adorable and I liked the emotional journey the character was on. Plus, nice fighting skills.

I also watched a little Golden Globes, on and off as I did other things in the evening. Bear drove Tanya to my parents on Sunday evening for 24 hours becuase he had to take Olivia to the doctor this morning and this way my Mom wouldn't have to come out for the day. So after I put Olivia to bed there was a bit more free time and it felt pretty nice to just have the TV on.

Today at work, I had to go to a meeting with Big Boss about project delivery. Since I'm in change of updating the database for our group, I got invited. Cardan went too and we sat in the middle of the table, not realizing that Big Boss would sit right across from us. He asked us to introduce ourselves. My Boss and Assistant Boss and some other people I knew were at the meeting and we mainly talked about projects they want to register with comptroller by June 30, the end of fiscal year. One of our projects came up, the one I'm doing cost comparison for, so I talked about that project and how we will certainly prioritize it. After the meeting, Boss complimented me for doing well and later on she stopped by my desk to specifically tell me that Big Boss commented that I did well in that meeting, so that cheered me up for sure.

Olivia just woke up again. Last couple of nights she seems to have trouble sleeping. Her nose sounds a little stuffy, maybe that's bothering her. I hope she sleeps better tonight. Last night I ended up holding her after 4 40, so she could sleep some more.

I'm watching the Golden Globes right now. I used to follow the award season closely but for the last few years as I watched fewer movies and TV, I kind of stopped caring. Unlike last year I can watch some of it tonight, since bedtime has gotten a lot better, but I find that while I'm enjoying it, I'm using the time to write this blog with the show in the background. Some of the dresses with open boobs are not that attractive and make me fear for accidents. I can't recognize most familiar actresses because of such heavy make-up on their faces - like Amy Adams, Melissa Benoist, Felicity Huffman and Eva Langoria (I did love Eva Langoria's dress). It's fun to see Sylvester Stallone, Matt Damon, Lady Gaga and Inside Out win.

I spent this week - well, evenings - mostly reading - for fun and for work, and writing (yay) and I actually watched a movie in one sitting, which has been a long time for me. I'm trying to make the best out of the improved bedtime before the 18 months sleep regression hits at the end of the month (Tanya has hit every one of the sleep regressions the books described to my utter 'joy'). But I am making the most out of my work break and I feel good about it.

The week itself was pretty ordinary: I was home with Tanya; had naps; I cooked dinner, including a cottage pie with ground turkey and with Tanya helping me by washing a carrot and 'mashing' the potatoes (a mix of regular potatoes and yams); I even managed to work out on our exercise bike this morning (I only did 15 minutes to ease into it after a very long time, still it's something).

Reading
I have orientation for work this coming week so I started reading some articles from our textbook to figure out what themes I want to focus on and to figure out my sequences. So yesterday and today I read Andrew Solomon's "Son," which is the excerpt from his book Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and Search for Identity. He focuses on what he calls "horizontal identities," identities that children don't inherit from their parents, identities that are different and often challenging for parents to understand and are often equated with illness or otherness. like deafness, or dwarfism, or disability, or being gay or even prodigies. I don't agree with some ideas - I don't want Tanya to be exactly like me- but I understand the premise that it might be hard to understand and not want to just cure otherness. He talks about children who are born deaf to hearing parents and the parental choice to put in an implant, which might kill the horizontal deaf culture. He focuses on what diversity adds as well, on why difference matters.

I forgot how wonderful, rich and challenging the articles in our textbook are. As a 35 year old I can really appreciate them and get most of the references but it is understandably challenging for 18-19 year olds. It's hard for them to focus on complex twenty pages. But it is certainly fun to challenge them. "Identity" and its construction and meaning is one of my favorite themes so I think I will use this article this semester - I just need to figure out how. I think I have it too but I will finalize this week. I decide to do all prep at the orientation days since they are forcing us into two full days of it (still bitter about that).

For fun, I'm almost done with Hamilton - I'm up to the duel. I'm reading faster as I'm nearing the end as it usually happens. I kind of love listening to "Hamilton" soundtrack in between reading - great confluence of events for me.

I read the short article about Stephen King praising J.K.Rowling's detective novels that she writes under Robert Galbraith and I realized there was the third book out there. I really loved the first two. I went to my library website to put it on hold, but my library card has expired for some reason. So I will have to make it to the library soon. I really want to read that book.

On Friday, my new Microsoft Office 2013 finally arrived at my parents' house after some extra traveling. I even got on the phone with the post office because my tracking said it was going to Brooklyn in a different direction - this was a priority mail order too. But it got there at the end, which is what's important. And I installed it yesterday. I'm still getting used to Windows 8 - slowly. It is still majorly awkward and weird at times like creating shortcuts for my desktop. Some things are better - I reorganized my tiles. But I really, really love my new Office. It did take a little time to figure out how to change the stupid paragraph formatting - I hate that space between paragraphs and I prefer Times Roman 12, but otherwise it is pretty cool and very shiny.

And today I'm getting reacquainted with Excel. I applied to a few jobs today, and one job for an Analyst Fellowship needs me to take a test in Excel in handling educational data. I'm going to do it on Tuesday when my Mom is over so I get uninterrupted 2 hours but in the meantime, I took their suggestion and I'm watching Excel online tutorials. I learned Excel in high school and used it since then. I write a pretty complex formulas for grading and I created charts before and sorted and filtered data. And as I rewatched Basic videos, it was all review. I mean, I created a new 2015 Job workbook today right before I watched those. But still, there are new features in Excel 2013, so it was nice to know. Tomorrow I will watch Intermediate and Advanced videos since those will be directly relevant to data analyzing. I'm taking a city test for Research Assistant soon and they give special consideration for those with Excel skills, so I want to check that box with a very clear conscience in knowing Advanced skills.

I started reading The Martian by Andy Weir, the book that Papa gave me for my birthday. The author is a science nerd so his book has lots of actual science. It is about an astronaut who is left for dead on Mars and has to figure out how to survive. It is based on real scientific possibilities. But so far, actual science which is described in detailed is a bit boring to me. It is written clearly but I just want more plot to happen. I did just start, so I'll keep reading.

Giving Tanya a little water at 5 seems to really help, her bedtime definitely got much easier. It is very exciting for me. She is not crying much and has been pretty much asleep for sure by 8:15. And it is fun to see her master a sippy cup - she is so excited when she sees it. Bear was having a training day for taking care of Tanya by himself on Mondays when I go back to work, so I got a bit of a break today. I still had to show him everything and put her down for naps but overall, I got time to look for jobs and read a bit.

Golden Globes are on but this year they are in the background for me, really. I haven't seen any movies and I don't watch much TV anymore. But Matt Bomer just won for "Normal Heart" and I got to cheer a bit. And many ugly dresses are fun too. Still, I'd rather read or watch more Excel videos. I'm forcing myself to relax.

I just finished watching the Golden Globes while Bear practiced piano and drew. (We don't have cable just a TV for Netflix/DVD viewings, but we do have a digital antenna on Bear's commuter and he graciously gave it up to me for three hours.) It was entertaining. Favorite opening joke - George Clooney one. I loved how so many people were drunk and the speeches were fun because of it. And there were many surprises. I adore Brooklyn Nine Nine , it's my favorite new show of the season, so I was very happy it won. That show is hilarious. I barely seen any nominated movies, but I made a list about those movies I want to catch up on. Local College has a nice movie borrowing in their library with many new movies, so I will take advantage of it this semester, if I can.

Today, as per usual on Sunday, Bear and I went grocery shopping. Then my parents came over after lunch and I went for a nice walk with them. Mama really liked our new magnetic darts and also re-potted Bear's aloe plant.

And I finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It only took me two days to read it - he books are really easy to read. I did enjoy it very much. We are all a product of our culture and time and it was interesting to see how that influences success.
