Day 13: Somewhere you would like to visit or move to
I don't think I would want to move out of New York although I wouldn't mind the suburbs. But there are a lot of places I really want to visit: Prague, Vienna, Scotland, redwoods in California, Alaska, and Australia come to mind.
30 Days of Fanfic Meme
13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
I love canon. I once even wrote a "Beauty and the Beast" take on Remus and Sirius and set it entirely within canon (and Sirius was the Beast while Remus was Beauty). I'm really good with details. But obviously, some things are fanon since the pairings I like are not canon pairings. And lately I've been writing a lot of AUs (which tend to be more popular). Of course, writing changed the way I see the original source material - writing makes you think more about character motivations and understand canon deeper. Like Sirius' character, as the example I gave before.
Life
It's a little funny how yesterday I wrote about a typical day in my life when today was a clear exception.
My best friend Yeva was having a birthday party/brunch at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan today so I got to dress up and spend the second half of the day hanging out with my close friends at a fancy restaurant, eating lots and lots of buffet food, on the 65th floor with amazing views of Central Park and the whole of Manhattan.
The morning started as usual. Tanya woke up right before 6am (argh) and we went to the playground and then I walked her in the stroller for an hour and 20 minutes while she napped (my exercise for the day). My parents came over by 11 since Bear was at work today and they were watching Tanya while I had the afternoon off.
The original meeting up time was 2pm so I aimed to leave by 12:30. Good thing I had some snacks, and didn't actually expect to eat at 2. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour by subway to get to midtown, so I left early enough. I hate being late and I like being there even a little early - I stress if I'm late. Yeva is a notoriously late person (once she was 3 hours late to my birthday party) but I figured she would try to be on time for her own reservation. I got a text by 1:30 while I was on the train that Marianna would be late and then Yeva said let's meet at 2:30.
Ok, not too annoying. I knew there was a Broadway Flea market going on on 44th street so I got off at Times Square and went there. I miss going to Manhattan for fun. I got two used CDs: West Side Story and Gershwin music and bought a cupcake from cute children. I would have stayed longer but I figured I should be by the restaurant by 2:30. Of course, everyone else was late. Janna finally came around 3 and around 3:20 or so we just went upstairs and enjoyed the views. Marianna and Adama showed up 10 minutes later so we had fun time chatting. Finally by 4 we decided to just get seated and start eating and not wait for the rest of the party (6 more people). Janna is pregnant and was hungry. We were hungry too. (I did pick up a custard roll in a Chinese bakery by the train, so it wasn't that bad). Finally, Yeva and everyone else showed up at 4:30 as we were well into our first plates and ordered drinks. She blamed her lateness on the blocked streets because of the UN meeting. She also said the original reservation was for 3. I just was really cranky at her - she knows I would be on time, shouldn't she just tell me 3 in the first place? Once Janna showed up, it was fine, but before that - if I knew, I would have hung out at the Flea Market for longer.
Anyway, the party itself and the food and everything was really good. Very tasty. And it was a buffet - so lots and lots of food from sushi to Indian to breakfast foods. And I had my first alcoholic cocktail in two years! There was rum and mint. And there was a lot of desert and just nice time hanging out with people I know well (I know Yeva's friends who were at the party well too, even if they are just acquaintances of mine). My kind of party: small group of people I know well and good conversation. I had to leave at 6 to be back home for Tanya's bedtime but by that time we were wrapping up and I had time to sort the check (I'm always the accountant of the group - usually we split the check evenly, but for birthdays, we cover the birthday person. I figure out how much goes on what card, tip. etc) I was pricey, of course, but about what I expected so I saved up for it.
So definitely an unusual day. But in the next two weekends we have a kid birthday party and a wedding to go to. Pretty busy and certainly different.
