Jun. 26th, 2010 11:00 pmI started “Catherine the Great” book that I got for my birthday. The intro is meh but first chapter is really good, lots of quotes from primary sources. One thing- no genealogy chart anywhere in the book and that Russian tsars and tsaritsas were very tricky – the genealogy is a bit complicated with cousins, half-siblings, wife’s – I really had to look that up. Internet can be a great thing, the research is so easy.
There was a fair at the beach this weekend and we went for a few hours this late morning. It was really hot with little wind, so Mama couldn’t take too much heat. Still, I managed to see every stall. I got myself a blue anclet. I found a funny t-shirt for Bear but they did not have his size, unfortunately. It is a tea-shirt of Stewie with a quote “I’d love to stay and chat but you are a total idiot” It was only $5 there – I found it online later for $18 Arh. No t-shirt for Bear this time. I also bought Italian sausage.
In the afternoon Papa and I watched the World Cup (USA vs Ghana) while I was cross-stitching. I was mostly cross-stitching and looking up when there was excitement in the air. For the first half Americans were asleep. They are not even playing with the ball there, just defending. Second half, they kept the pressure on and did much better. Finally. It was exciting with Donovan landed the penalty shot. I have much respect for Ghana’s goalie who saved so many shots. It’s too bad that we didn’t make it. Second half and overtime was good soccer.
“Doctor Who” S5E13. “The Big Bang” Well, that was the season. A really good conclusion, lots of timey-wimey time travel stuff. Not hard to follow, really. Nice wedding too. Rory is now a companion full time which is really awesome. I really like him. And he guarded her for 2000 years. And now there is a married couple on the Tardis – which is such a new dynamic, and I don’t think has been done before, but it is a development I like. Internet figured out long ago that the Doctor in the “Angels” episode was a Doctor from this episode, so that wasn’t such a surprise. And even his heartfelt speech when he tucked little Amelia into bed was really manipulating her, which she realized later, and was happy that she figured it out and was able to bring the Doctor back. And that speech and plan I liked a lot. He is clever! How did the whole – parents erased from time in the first place worked , overall, wouldn’t she’d been erased too when they were erased? Doctor was dancing all spazy! And River! She gets more awesome every time. They still don’t explain all, like why is River in the 21st century and how did she know she had to pass Amy the book?
This season did not gel for me, in general – I didn’t always like its style. And I think I just figured out why – it is a fairytale and I just don’t want a fairytale, I really want more sci-fi. And yes, there is lots of time travel, which is nice, but a lot depends on remembering and believing things into existence and that makes no sense to me. I loved half the episodes this season and really didn’t like three and that is not a ratio I like. I’ll keep watching, obviously, since individual Moffat-written episodes are really good, and I like that there are two companions now, but I am not as excited about the show. And I think in the next season Eleven will meet River properly, which would be excellent. And we get more on ‘the silence.”
“Doctor Who S5E10” “Vincent and the Doctor” This was my favorite episode of the season! It beats the Angels and the final two episodes hands down. Just for that scene alone where the Doctor takes Vincent to Musee D’Orsay. There were tears – and doesn’t happen that much with TV. I always like stories with historical figures and this one was no exception. Vincent was awesome and the episode captures his depression, madness, artistry and passion. Of course, he would be the monster since he sees the world differently. And like the Doctor said – good moments don’t make bad moments go away but then bad moments don’t take away the good. And his describing the how he saw the sky – that is a really cool way to get into that painting. And the Doctor being all bored while Van Gogh painted was very hilarious and very silly. This episode I would rewatch. I thought it tackled depression, madness and suicide themes very well and it was what sci-fi ought to be.
There was a bit of drama with NH vacation, but it was sorted, I think, because it is really hard to reschedule five people – it was hard enough to find the time in the first place. So no rescheduling.
