Bear went running in the morning and I had breakfast with Bear’s parents. Usually, in the morning everyone has breakfast on their own time in that house, so that was actually unusual. We talked about traveling mostly. It is fun how many things we could talk about and completely avoid politics or religion. Bear’s parents are conservative Republican Catholics, so that could get very interesting, hence avoiding all the pitfalls of conversation.

In the afternoon, Bear and I went to visit his grandmother in her Catholic nursing home and found her about to start bingo. So we joined in and I played one of the two cards she had and actually won one of the games. As a prize I got some candy. (They play for candy and the last play is for money – all of fifty cents). After bingo we went to her room and played a bit of cards. Bear won ‘kings in the corner’ game and then we left. It was a good visit. She is 93 and forgets a lot of recent things but is still very spirited.

After that we drove to a park, with a lake and trails that is not too far from the nursing home. Distances in Long Island are always so relative since everyone has to drive everywhere. Still, own trusty GPS didn’t fail and that part was pretty close. It was a nice spring day and after a bit of orienting ourselves we had a nice nature walk. It would be nice to come back in the summer and rent a boat on the lake there.

We got back just in time for family dinner, as Bear’s brother and brother’s girlfriend came over as well. It felt like a Thanksgiving dinner with all the food and a turkey. And desert too. I brought over some gingerbread and tea cookies and both went over well. After dinner, Bear drove me home and we practiced some Russian. He is up to the words of motion. I haven’t done Russian grammar since I was a child and it is interesting to see the rules again and see someone approach it as a foreign language and try to make sense of the rules.

“Brothers & Sisters” is such a comfort food TV for me. It does not have the best storylines and it full of soap opera qualities sometimes but it has such fun characters, especially Kevin and Scotty. And that family feels like a real family with all their quirks. And they resolve the dilemmas pretty quickly too. Tonight’s episode was about Kevin’s b-day and featured the great Walker dinner again.

This was a really nice weekend.
