Apr. 6th, 2010 11:00 pmThis was the eight day of Passover – last day to eat mazza. Passover actually went quickly this year. It helped that I could control what I could eat at home; it is always harder to eat at restaurants or cafeterias at this time.
I got to go outside to play for half an hour with neighbor kids. It is cute how they occasionally show up at my door and see if I want to play outside with them since I know the jump rope game. And I figure leaving the house to enjoy the sunny weather and do a bit of exercise. I cant believe how much energy I had as a kid to be able to jump so much. Now I get tired so much easier. Plus my center of gravity is much different.
“Changes” by Jim Butcher finally came out today and Amazon was nice enough to ship it so it would arrive on the release date. I couldn’t wait to see what happens so, for my sanity, I just skimmed the whole book. Wow, that was some good plot. And the cliffhanger! I realized that if I didn’t skim it, it would just drive me crazy. Now I can read the details at my leisure. Jim Butcher is really in control of his story, especially as he has a plan for 20 + books with three part apocalypse trilogy at the end. As his world is getting more sophisticated, his characters grow and clearly get older, which I just love.
Someone made this “Dresden Files” Timeline , which is very handy
I love Harry and Susan. Their story has been wonderful and poignant and it is still clear how much they love each other. And Harry starts to forgive her for keeping the knowledge of Maggie away from him too which makes the ending sadder. Her sacrifice at the end was very cry worthy and actually very appropriate at the same time. That story is now fully over (well she’d always be Maggie’s Mom). I’m glad they had some kisses. Maybe it is all the angst that makes this book good or maybe it is excellent plot. But just skimming the book elevated it about “Dead Beat,” my previously favorite book of the series. I also liked how many characters makes cameos. And Butters! is awesome. Ebenezer being Harry’s grandfather actually made all kinds of sense, although now I question if he knows about Thomas. Ebenezer was very cold to Thomas in the last book, so I hope he doesn’t know.
My favorite development was Harry becoming Winter Knight. That just raises the stakes all kinds of ways and should prove interesting, providing Butcher won’t go for the loophole some posters on the forums suggested. Since Harry possibly dies at the end (although I don’t think he is quite dead yet, just shot), the Winter Knight mantle might just go back to Mab. But I don’t think so, because Butcher never shied from consequences. He did a great job with Lasciel plotline, so hopefully Harry will still be Winter Knight.
This book really changes everything as the title suggests as Harry no longer has his office, car, staff, house, leather coat, Susan and now he has a daughter somewhere (who will probably appear again once she will be a teenager with new Wizard powers). I’m looking forward to the novella in October and a new book next year.
