Today was bitter, bitter cold outside and just going to the car and to the restaurant/hall was unpleasant. Good thing we just drove there. We did have to drive in a different car since Bear’s right tire deflated the day before, but still, yay for car!

We went to Bear’s great-aunt’s 90th birthday/family reunion party in the afternoon. Bear’s parents and sister with sister’s boyfriend and boyfriend’s daughter were there too. Bear’s grandmother was seventh of nine children (she is almost 93 now and it was too cold for her to attend) and this was the birthday of the eighth child in that family. They are two remaining siblings. So the family gatherings tend to be big, especially as all nine children were Catholic and most with the desire for three or four children and/or lack of birth control. Not that Bear was super excited to go and mingle but it was nice to have the gathering as an opportunity to spend the whole weekend together. I did like looking at old photographs of this person’s life and even a high school yearbook from 1938. There were several family albums and genealogies always interest me. I also like the food and especially desert. I had cheesecake and cannolis and was so stuffed I did not eat much dinner later.

In the evening, we watched some movies I brought. First, we watched “9,” mostly because Papa liked it and it had an interesting trailer of an animated movie with apocalyptic theme. However, the plot was so ridiculous that neither Bear nor I could really make sense of it and neither of us is stupid. None of the characters’ actions or motivations or endgame really made sense. Yes, it had some interesting images, although the monsters were such a rip-off of “Terminator.” But just like with recent “Terminator 4” movie, for a movie to succeed, its plot needs to be coherent. I was falling asleep on the movie and I was really glad it was short. Not worth watching.

What was worth watching was Planet Earth. I kept telling Bear how awesome this show was but I don’t think he believed me until we watched it together. First I rewatched “Caves” with him and I found it just as interesting the second time. And then we saw “Deserts.” Some impressions: Bactrian camel mating dance was funny, heat vision showing how kangaroos cool themselves was very interesting, deserts in bloom and cactus keeping water was very impressive, oryx look too big to live near a desert and locusts are freaky.

When we took a break before watching “Deserts,” Bear went downstairs to get us some ice-cream as a snack. He brought back cookies and cream ice-cream, which is one of my favorites and it just made me happy. It’s the little things.
