Since my phone is getting crowded with open tabs, I figured I should do another links post.

1. 2015 Fall movie preview
I don't watch a lot of movies anymore nor do I watch regular TV to see trailers, so this was a nice little summary of upcoming films. I'm looking forward to The Martian, since I read and liked the book and I like Matt Damon.

2. Hugo Awards last weekend awarded many 'no award' awards because of the whole Puppies controversy where a few writers, generally conservative, male and white, felt that awards became too political and leftist with less 'traditional' adventure stories and with more political themes with terrible quality (which generally includes female writers and people of color). These Puppies screwed with the nomination process to promote mostly white male writers. Hugos gave 'no award' in those categoties. I cheer that decision. If you want to lament the current state of sci-fi or create your own award, go ahead, but don't hijack the existing process because the world is getting more inclusive. My Dad, who has gotten more conservative over the years, is on the side of Puppies. We argue over state of Sci fi a lot. So I collected a few articles that outline the issue. If you are into sci-fi, this should be interesting. For fairness sake I will link the article my Dad sent me after I sent him the Wired article, which I will link first.

a. The Wired article
Good breakdown of what happened and why Hugo vote mattered. George Martin is the voice of reason at the end of the article.

b. The Federalist article explains the Puppies position how diversity is the 'War on Art" This is the article my Dad sent me. It's well written but I still disagree with it.

c. WordPress post
Why representation matters and how just because a book talks about gender or race or other issue, it doesn't mean the quality of the book is bad.

3. "No, I'm not crowdfunding this baby" by Amanda Palmer
Amanda Palmer is eight months pregnant and one of her fans actually wrote to her with worry that impending motherhood would change Amanda as an artist and how terrible that would be and why should the fan contribute to Patreon. Just sheer gall. The artists are not your personal slaves. And art evolves, that's the point. Also no one is asking Neil Gaiman if fatherhood is going to change his ability to create stories. Anyway, I thought this was a great response and a good read.
