Day 2 of the Olympics:
I watched the tiny bits of:
Judo – It looks very much like wrestling. I’m not sure what I thought it would be like. I just watched a little bit when I woke up.
Weightlifting – lifting more than double your weight is always impressive. I was watching the women to this.
Table tennis – just a few points to get the feel for it. I like playing table tennis but it is a little frantic to watch it.
Canoe/Kayak – kayak through rapids – slalom - that looks difficult. And fun. I liked this.
Women’s skeet shooting – target shooting – pretty fun – US won
The main focus of the day, though, was on archery, swimming and gymnastics.
Archery – Women’s team – some quarterfinals, etc. I’m really liking this – I can’t believe I never watched competition archery before. This is why online streaming is so worth it. I did catch the finals (parts of Russia/Japan and China/S. Korea) on TV – I don’t like the commentary though, I’d much rather just watch a straight feed.
NBC people who interview the athletes after they swim ask the stupidest questions. How does it feel to win? I don’t know, pretty good. How does it feel to lose? Not that great, I wager.
True Blood S5E8 I’m really enjoying this season especially since major changes with the vampires seem to be underway. Eric is the rational one and Bill is going a bit off the rails along with the authority. That Alcide sex scene was just pandering but it was such a nice pandering. I would enjoy those scenes more if I wasn’t watching this show with my Dad. Graphic scenes do make it a bit awkward. Lafayette – I’m glad he is charging money for being a medium. That scene with Jesus was so sweet. I’m still not that interested in the ifrit storyline. I’m worried about Hoyt. The actor who plays Sam (also Sam) did a great job playing Luna. I think the reason I love this show so much is because of its humor in the midst of disturbing thing. Sookie’s story seems to go into a direction I’m not expecting. It is not connecting to the rest of the stories. Stories do need to come together somehow. I do like that vampires are so scary here. The glamoring by Pam was so disturbing. I think that is the scariest power in this vampire universe.
Books I read in July (the few that I had time for):
“The Giver” I only heard of this book a few month ago and I borrowed it on Kindle from the library. Then I read it in less than 24 hours. Yes, it is a YA book and there were narrative problems but I thought the story was engaging and the dystopian word was interesting. The style was very simplistic but I thought it was to fit the story.
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” I am not really into teenage angst anymore. Plus I really didn’t like the narration style – something was wrong about the main character. He was thinking like a person much younger than 15-16. Maybe he is a little autistic. And I just don’t care much about his life. I didn’t like “Catcher in the Rye” much either and I read that a second time when I was 17 – I think I’m just not into that type of books. The movie trailer looked so much more interesting than the book.
“The Wake” This is my favorite Volume of the Sandman. It is the combination of stories and the art. I so love the art in this volume. The last story of Shakespeare seems a bit of indulgence by Gaiman about the nature of the author and storytelling and stories but a well deserved indulgence.
July movies: I just seen very few movies – I’m just not watching that many lately but I have seen two. I rented “The Artist” from redbox to add to my Oscar movie list (I’ve seen every movie that won an Oscar) and I watched “The Decoy Bride” with Kelly Macdonald and David Tennant on Netflix Instant. (And since I just seen “Brave” where Kelly Macdonald voiced the main character, her voice just stuck out in my head).
“The Artist” A cute movie. Not the best movie ever but I do appreciate the creativity. It took a little time to get into in but once the main plot starts I really appreciated it. And I loved the sound nightmare scene.
“The Decoy Bride” Now this is a type of romantic comedy I adore. It was really wonderful and funny. And all the characters were sympathetic. And the conflicts seemed actually realistic enough and not that contrived. I really enjoyed this movie.
One movie I did not see was the “Dark Knight Rises” because I really have no interest in it. I didn’t like “The Dark Knight” very much, especially what they did with Rachel’s character – in the first movie she at least had a career and a drive and in the second she was the love interest who had to die and her job took a major back seat. I might watch this movie on DVD but I’m just not that interested.
