Mar. 4th, 2012 11:00 pmBear went running in the morning so I had time to do some work. I read another chapter of Dubois on the Haitian Revolution (“Avengers of the New World”), then graded more midterms and hagiography papers. (The students had to read a prologue and two chapters of Dubois, which were in a pdf file on the class website. I had about five emails about which pages the students were responsible for since God forbid they read more than five pages. Finally, I told them to write on one of the chapters but read both – not that they would. But I did really like the chapters - really informative and written well. One day when I have time I want to read the whole book.)
Then in the afternoon we went over the Bear’s Grandma’s 95th birthday party at her nursing home. On the way there we picked up cake and I bought flowers. There were about 20 people there, mostly relatives. It was most fun to see Diane, his Mom’s cousin who is a nun and who is such a fun person. I just realized she reminds me of my grandma in her kindness and humor and I think that is why I like her so much. And his brother and girlfriend were there so we got to talk wedding details. It was a nice party – nothing terribly exciting since 95th birthday and everything but that is a great birthday to have.
I was home by 9pm and writing a lecture on Terror, Napoleon and French Revolution for the next day. By 12:30 I was exhausted. The coming week will be a horrible one, I can tell. A week before Spring Break is usually one of the busiest.
