Dec. 15th, 2009 11:00 pmFolder review day. Got up early to go to school and graded nonstop from 7:30 to 12, managed to grade 10 papers and the rest of the finals. By the end, when I was done with the papers and was just finishing up the finals I couldn’t even absorb the sentences anymore. I was reading but nothing was staying in my brain at all. I just passed them if it looked coherent. Good thing it was a Pass/Fail type final and I already looked at those I suspected could fail.
Mama came to hang out with me today as I was finishing grading after her work got a bit cancelled with her client having a stroke. She got to emotional over it so she didn’t want to be alone, and she drove over.
We went to lunch around 12:20 and I ended up getting a swine flu shot. They were having a free clinic for students at the student center and we were there to get lunch. Now I won’t turn into a pig. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get it, especially because I was sick recently but seeing another grad student I knew be so cheerful about it, I just went for it. They even offered my Mom a vaccine too as a family member but she will wait until the next clinic next Monday since she was sick even more recently.
Folder review itself was fast and painless. I failed less students than I wanted, though, the slacker guy ended up with a “C” because the director determined that taking another semester of Basic won’t do him any good and he can just go to Expos. He was happy with a ‘C’ because he knew he slacked off. He gave me a two page Paper 3 and three page Paper 4. Since his Paper 5 was not too terrible he got off easy.
Then I went to the campus where I teach to hold final office hour to give folders back with the final grade. That is always interesting experience. Some are so happy with a “B” or a “C+” that it just makes me happy too to see their reactions and one guy who got a “A” had no reaction at all, it was weird. There were also donuts and tea and cakes in the office there to help up sit for so long to give out the folders and my brain was tired to do anything but look up Golden Globe nomination. Many students showed up actually, and it was a pretty good closing to a semester. My brain is fried.
Got home and had enough energy left to just watch the final performance show of SYTYCD. That show was just one hour with nine performances and it felt rushed but I liked most of the dances, in particular the contemporary with Kathryn and Jakob. I couldn’t take my eyes of Jakob in all his dances and I voted for him twice. But I am pretty happy with the final six. I do want this show in the summer when fall schedule can’t interfere with it. I wish we had final four and a performance show with the rehearsal footage. There is a fine line between too much filler and too little breaks.
