17 Iyar/1 May, 2010
May. 1st, 2010 11:00 pmIt is a really warm and summery day which just lifts the mood. It is also May 1 which is International Labor Day. When I was little, it was a major holiday with demonstrations that adults were made to go to. But for kids, it was a fun day off school with balloons and celebrations.
Early in the morning I went to the store for onions and that it was already warm and sunny. I got to do a bunch of relaxing Saturday things.
In the morning I read more “Dune.” Then in the afternoon, Papa and I drove up to the library. We could have walked there, but it would mean an hour to go there and back and it was almost time for lunch. I needed to return some books but I also wanted to visit my local comic book shop next door to the library since it was Free Comic book day. We got to pick four comic books each from the special display. I got “The Tick,” “Toy Story,” “War of the Supermen,” and “Green Hornet.” The Tick was actually a reprint of the original first issue and the rest were more of previews. The Toy Story people just released part one of the story for free so people would be forced to buy Part two later. Evil marketing. Still, free comics. Papa got four children’s comics for my nephews in Minsk. They are studying some English but we figure they would still be exciting about American comics with pictures even if they can’t always understand them.
After lunch I did a bit more cross stitch. Now that all the four corners are set the whole size of the project is clearly visible.
And I got more than half hour of roller blading in too, as we went to the beach area. Lots of favorite Saturday activities. I need to exercise more as my body feels stiffer after the winter.
I got “Good Hair” from Netflix and that was an interesting documentary about African-American hair. It is crazy just how much money the people in the documentary have to spend on their hair to fit in Eurocentric idea of beauty. A weave costs $1000 plus. Insane. Makes me feel lucky I only spend $100 per year on my hair. I just do a basic haircut a few times a year. My hair got unruly a bit after a short hair cut when I was twenty and sometimes becomes ‘liony hair’ but still I don’t have to spend a lot of money to really maintain it.
