Oh My God. Best news Ever. Get library books with Kindle!

Today I was teaching my history students how to write papers. The students in my Global class had to bring a three page rough draft, which I think was a great idea since I could go over things like thesis and topic sentences. For my law class, I should have held the class in the library itself instead of just showing the library website. I let them go early today, not that they minded. I did give a good handout of topics and explained how to search for articles.

Local College offered me two classes for the Spring semester again. I will still teach Global but I also get a new upper class. I basically got a choice between two classes. This was their description from their course catalog:

Class 1: “The World of the Crusades*. *One unit.* This course will focus on
Western Europe at a time of intense creativity, expansive growth, and
significant interactions with non-Christian, non-Western neighbors. Topics
will include the Viking expansion, El Cid, Saladin, the Templar’s, the
Islamic response to Western Crusaders, cathedral and castle-building,
pilgrimage, Venice and Byzantium, Marco Polo, and Jewish communities in the
Mediterranean. Class trips to the Cloisters and to the Cathedral of St. John
the Divine. *Offered as required.*

Class 2: Sex, Power & Identity in Europe before 1800.* (I)* One unit. *This
course traces the development of “male” and “female” from the ancient world
through the nineteenth century, focusing on the impact of gender on culture
and on political and social organization. Changing scientific and medical
ideas about sexuality will be discussed. Topics will include attitudes
toward chastity, prostitution and childbirth, the history of costume and
cross-dressing, conflicting notions of “honor,” the use of gender for
political and social commentary, and the impact of the Enlightenment on the
“gendering” of state and society. The course will also compare the gendered
model of the Western nuclear family to non-Western examples.* Offered
alternate years as needed.*

Both sound very fun but, of course, I was leaning toward Sex and Power since I can do Karras and Cadden and such and after some thinking I decided on that one. I finally get to do a gender class. Yay.

I did a major happy dance when I read the announcement for Kindle. I prefer to read on the Kindle over the iPad most of the time, so I'm really happy to be able to have that choice since I hope to do a lot more of my reading for free!

Yes! My friend Trisha told about the Library getting Kindle books—I wonder how that will work? I haven’t checked out the link yet but I’ll check it out later.

That’s exciting about the class options! (:
