Aug. 12th, 2011 11:55 pmNPR list of top 100 sci-fi and fantasy books chosen by people. Mary Stewart is on it with “Crystal Cave.” The second book in that Merlin trilogy “Hollow Hill” used to be my favorite book before Harry Potter.
I was working on my history of law syllabus today and the introduction lecture. I figured out all but the first section – the Roman law. I probably should use their textbook as a guide.
In the evening I wanted something more substantial for supper than just cottage cheese so I walked to the pizza place and got a spinach roll to go. It is a nice walk actually. And after I was craving an éclair, so I took another walk. But the local bakery was already closed and bakery in the supermarket did not have individual éclairs. And as I much as I wanted the cream I didn’t want to resort to a donut tonight. So I got ice-cream. I’ll try for an éclair tomorrow.
Torchwood S4E6 This was the most intense episode so far with some shots I couldn’t watch like pen in the heart. I had the hands in front of my eyes. The tension here just great. And I don’t know if I can watch the episode again – too much tension. And this episode lives up to its title of “Middlemen” – from the camp director to PhiCorp guy (which is a great twist) to the guy Rhys talks too. Bureaucracy at its worst. And blowing the whistle doesn’t make too much difference which is a good point too. And I just realized that Oswald Danes not being in the episode was actually good. Good character moments: Jack – great conversations with mistress (nice reading of email) and the PhiCorp guy, funny in a Jack way. And suggesting a threesome with the coat. And having a ‘hostage’. He loves his coat. Gwen – being all badass. Telling off the doctor. And now her whole family might be captured, the bad guys could be bluffing, though. But with the next week trailer Gwen will firmly chose family over Jack. Rex – trying to be sneaky there but ultimately failing which is a refreshing change from the usual trope. Esther – continues to be my favorite new character. I was cheering out loud during her fight with camp director (I’m so glad the cop shot him). Go, Esther. I do love her reactions to everything – Torchwood has always been realistic enough about how people react in a crisis. Rhys – trying to be secret agent there and using Jack’s name. And trying to sneak in an extra kiss with Gwen. What did the guy in China saw that led him to kill himself (or as close to death as possible – 45 floors and all). I also like that Rex and Esther did not magically escape the camp and had to work on it. And I’m watching them just as much as Jack and Gwen now. Next week – the flashback episode and the guy Jack loved. This season is starting to build.
