Mar. 16th, 2011 11:00 pmWaking up to car alarm at 7:30 is not fun.
I gave my students in-class exercise 3 today. Some students don’t check their email and read some extra material for class. I gave them all a bit more time for their essays. In my first class, I gave my Islam lecture and in the second it was Christian monks and beginning of Islam.
I did like reading about the religious conversions in their sourcebook, in particular about Vladimir of Kievan Rus picking a religion. He went shopping. And, of course, in most of the story it was interesting to read about the role women play in making kings convert and, therefore, whole states convert.
“Quest for El Cid” by Fletcher is a fun book. I know a lot about medieval Europe but mostly about North-Western Europe and Spain was a bit of a missing link in my education. This book is fun and I think I will read the whole thing for fun. It traces Spain from the conquests in 711 to the beginning of the twelfth century with a particular focus on the eleventh century.
I finally watched “Stonehenge Apocalypse.” The first five minutes are so terrible. It is bad in a fun way, though. CGI is so crappy too, it is really funny. People actually walking around the stones did take me out of the movie. I really wish I wasn’t watching it by myself, I have the need to snark and mock it mercilessly, which is really half the fun of watching a SyFy channel movies. Methos’s inspirational speech of “let’s find answers” was so silly and unnecessary I think I saw him cringing at it. He was fun to watch for little silly expressions throughout the movie. I think he was having a bit of fun. Security at the place is very shoddy too, Jacob just walks around with no problem even with everyone looking for him. It passes Bechdel since there is more than one woman scientist and they talk to each other about sciency things occasionally. Overall, a fun Sy-fy channel romp with lots of sci-fi/fantasy actors. Why was US Army in England? And why are the military cars American with the steering on the left. It would be fun to count all the clichés here. I do really appreciate that there is no romance here at all, just people dealing with disasters. Ok, no more comments. With an extremely high death toll of millions which makes for a depressing ending. This is a really fun terrible sy-fy channel movie.
