This morning, I read Philip K. Dick’s “Adjustment Team” from his “Selected Stories” book. There is a movie coming out soon with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt based on the story and the trailer for the movie actually made me want to finally pick by Philip K. Dick stories. From what I read today, the movie would just take the basic premise and do a whole new plot. There are some outdated politics in the story and some gender issues (since the God-type person apparently scoffs at sharing anything with a woman, especially a wife). But since it was written in the 50s or 60s, it doesn’t bother me too much. The premise itself, of reality needing to be occasionally reset for some grand plan, is interesting and some of the images the story evokes of things being grey and ash on being adjusted is quite fascinating. And the reaction of a person accidently stumbling into it all, because his dog did not bark on time. And God is a dick in this story.

There was nothing much to do today, since it is a Saturday, which is firmly my day off. It is still hot outside, although I went for a walk to the store to get some stuff (and got caught in a nice rain on the way back, which was so welcome in the humidity). So I watched a lot of TV.

“Highlander” Season 1. I finished the season today. Here are some thoughts:

My favorite two episodes were “Bad Day in Building A” and “Band of Brothers.” The first one because that was a great hostage scenario and Duncan got really mad and it was just good tv. The second because for the first time I bought that Duncan was in danger. I mean I know he is not going to lose a fight or anything, since it is his show. But having an Immortal who is a thousand years old and much more skilled being his opponent, and having Tessa and Richie genuinely worry and leave for Paris really heightened the tension. And we meet Darius too. And start the Paris half too.

“See No Evil” and “Eyewitness” were great Tessa episodes and I thought they were well done.
“See No Evil” was great for how the victim reacted and the conversations between her and Tessa and the latter is because Tessa just doesn’t give up.

Season One was somewhat mixed in quality since the series is just establishing itself and trying to figure out what it would be, but the season does a great job for making me love the characters. There are nice little moments, even in the most terrible episodes (like “The Beast Below” which was just awful Hunchback of Notre Dame/Phantom of the Opera knock off).

My favorite character is Tessa, of course, because she rocks. She can run over someone with a car, and talk down a delusional Immortal, who thinks he is tasked by God to get rid of sin, from killing her. She doesn’t passively sit there and she doesn’t let people intimidate her, even ones with swords. She also doesn’t let Duncan choose for her or “protect” her. She wants to know the truth and decides for herself. And she has her own successful career while maintaining a great passionate relationship. I didn’t expect to like her so much and I’m not looking forward to her leaving the show.

I’m also happy that I don’t have to yell at the screen when someone senses danger and just ignores it, only to be killed. Most people are more active than that, and often react reasonable by running away or checking the danger out or fighting back.

So based on this season, I am going to watch other seasons which I think is a goal of any Season One.
