Happy Birthday, Janna.

A volcano in Iceland is grounding air travel in Northern Europe and especially in the UK. Well, not the volcano eruption itself but the volcanic ash that is spewing from it. And it is not clear when the ban on air travel will end. Well, it is a good thing we don’t have to fly for a month and we are flying to Eastern Europe. The whole lack of flying thing might be frustrating many people, but at least we can look at pretty nature pictures .

A professor was removed from teaching her class for grading according to ability, not curve, and for tough standards. This is so wrong. This is her class and she had a right to determine grading standards, especially since she had academic integrity in her exams. I get that she is tough and the students had a right to drop her class, but you can’t just remove a professor mid semester. At least the professor was not fired, just removed from the class. I think what galls me is that the dean didn’t talk to the professor about the issues, he just removed her. There should have been some discussion, at least. And students usually need a wake up call in the beginning of a semester to understand they have to do work.

Donation dilemma. Today is the first of the month and I usually do some donation to sort of match my Netflix subscription. Usually I like Global Giving . But my Undergrad University is being very sneaky and making me uncomfortable. In October they called soliciting for their general fund. I don’t like car salesman tactics or being pressured or having to decide ‘right now’ so I told them what I always tell those kinds of phone calls. I asked them to send me the information in the mail. Which the pushy solicitor interpreted as “I will put you down for $20.” They have been sending me notices every few month to make good on ‘my pledge.’ After ignoring it for a while, I did make this month’s contribution over to them. Now, on general principles, I really don’t mind contributing to my Undergrad University. I got a great education there and had a really good experience. And I believe in education and supporting the school once I have a real job with real income. It was just the way they get the donation that was making me uncomfortable.

Bones S5E17. High school reunion episode. Very funny. When they do humor well, the episode works. And they did not pretend last week and the emotional discussion didn’t exist. Couldn’t care about Angela breaking up with Wendell subplot and otherwise I just wanted the show to be at the high school all the time because those scenes were funny. David Boreanaz had to dance and he always looks so silly dancing – just reminds me of the “Angel” episode where he and Wesley danced like idiots at a party. And Freddy Krueger played a great janitor who taught Brennan about death. (I was actually friendly to janitors in high school, just like I liked to chat with dining hall ladies in college). Fun episode.
