International Women’s Day! Happy 8th of March! When I was little this was a real holiday and a day off school and presents. (Well, it still is in the former republics of Soviet Union). I got presents three times a year – New Year, birthday and 8th of March. So it ranked as my third favorite time of the year. The presents stopped when we moved to America but I still think of this day fondly. I used to make cards for Mama and Grandma.
Post office farce. Today as Mama and I went to the post office to get a money order to pay for our Belarus visas, I was a witness to a bit of a farce. The woman in front of us in the long line was Russian and she and Mama kind of started talking. The woman began to bemoan how hard life is in America and that life always sucks and no one can catch a break and that to get anywhere you need to know people, like for jobs at the post office. BUT throughout the conversation it was slowly revealed that her daughter just got done with eye surgery doctor school and is about to sign a three year contract in Long Island (the horror of moving 100 miles away) which will necessitate selling of the second home they have across the street from their home, that they bought for said daughter. And her son after finishing college just had to settle for working in their family business. Which of course is just a terrible thing. Especially since, as we left the post office, we saw the woman drive off in Mercedes SUV playing a loud cheerful Russian song. It was like a comedy show to me and this really amused me. I don’t understand people looking at the world like that.
House S6E15 An extremely funny episode about connections. PotW is a blogger looking to connect with the world, House is seeking a connection with his biological father, if only through the latter’s religious book, and Chase wondering if all romantic connections are based on superficial looks. Two hysterical threads in the episode – House, Wilson and Chase on a speed dating scene with Chase pretending to be unemployed American who still gets lots of phone numbers because of his looks (like he never knew he was good looking) and Wilson being in a porn-movie with antlers in his youth (not the porn part, just artsy scenes in the beginning). House, of course, made posters and the whole hospital was laughing. And so was I. And Wilson going to Chase for help with getting “House” back. One of the funniest episodes lately. Plus we got fun porn film names.
