When summer comes, I seem to lose the drive to blog. I write down notes every day in my Word document and tell myself that I will catch up on the more full entries and I usually do. But this June I just don’t feel up to it. And before I knew it, four weeks have passed. And I decided to change the format, at least for June, and to combine my notes into a few themed posts. Less reading list spam too that way.

Part 1: TV

In the summer, and in particular this summer, I only have three TV shows to watch – “True Blood” “SYTYCD” and “Burn Notice.” And well, “Buffy” and “Angel” rewatch along with MarkWatches project. Watching it slowly and reading all the comments and reviews are making me appreciate and feel it more too. (And I also catch up on YouTube clips of Chrolli and Chryed storylines for my soap fix, although there haven’t been my screen time on that). This past year, I seem to be really backing off TV, although it is still my favorite story telling medium. I guess not many shows hold my attention anymore.

I also finished catching up to “Legend of Korra” online.

I can’t wait until the Olympics, though – gymnastics and swimming make great summer TV. “True Blood” and “Burn Notice” I watch with my Dad – which occasionally gets a little uncomfortable in watching the former but that show is such crack.

So here are my thoughts so far.

True Blood S5E1-3

True Blood S5E1 It’s so good. I love this show so much. It is such crack. This show can be so absurd and horrifying and funny at the same time like when Steve Newlin was confessing his love for Jason. Or Pam in Walmart yellow pajamas getting into the grave. Tara is a vampire now but her brain was all over the floor so we won’t know the extent of her sanity yet. I’m looking forward to vampire Authority the most. The Mom werewolf is actually making me care about werewolves.

True Blood S5E2 Well, at least Tara can talk – she is not stuck in the mute state. I want to see more Pam flashbacks. Little wolf was very cute. I like seeing inside the Authority but I don’t know about the religious aspect. And does it mean the ultimately mainstreaming is a goal for the Authority to control all humans? Yes, I get that we get a discussion on fundamentalism – it is a little over the head. It will take a while for Russell to get full strength. Tara’s Dad (from Buffy) is playing Debbie’s Dad, it looks like and that will set off feelings. Don’t know what to make of Terry’s storyline. Steve continues to be a hilarious vampire. This episode did feel like a lot of set up. Alexander Scarsgard is such a great actor.

True Blood S5E3 Flashbacks of Eric making Pam are really about Pam as a maker to Tara. Loved the first Eric and Bill meeting and seeing Lorena. Those were my favorite part of the episode. I can’t believe Sookie just told Alcide about Debbie. And then she wants him to be instantly OK about it. Authority plot is keeping my interest, although Salome’s magic vagina is a bit annoying. I do adore this show, though.

“SYTYCD” Up to choosing Top 20

As usual, this show makes me feel like summer. I watched all the auditions and Vegas week and I’m glad all the crazies were kept to the minimum. I’m excited for the season, even if do have to wait two weeks because of the 4th of July.

SYTYCD Top 20 are chosen Episode reaction
Stage! Cat! Judges! The Season begins. I adore Cat.

Contemporary:
Alexa – promoted too much but I do like her so far
George – like him a lot – he so pulls focus in the Tyce’s routine, I was watching him. And I liked his bow tie.
Amber –she is interesting, we’ll see
Will – he wasn’t featured in the auditions – he is attractive.

Ballroom:
Witney – I knew she was going on the show since the audition and I love her.
Lindsay – I can’t tell her apart from Whitney too much but I’m excited for two ballroom dancers.
Nick – stop crying! Yay, ballroom guy. He won’t last long, I don’t think.

I figured out they both will get in – judges can’t fake me anymore. A threesome dance! All three of them are really exciting. Nick is weaker than the girls but he is in the supporting role here. I’m glad to see ballroom representation this season.

Ballet:
Eliana
Daniel
Chehon

I was rooting for both boys and I was very excited first for Daniel and then for the other one. And they both should not be wearing shirts for the rest of the season. And I like the girl too but with those two dancing without shirts my eyes were not on her. . I’m so, so exited for not having so many contemporary. Nigel, stop kissing choreographer’s ass.

Jazz:
Tiffany – yes, judges, she was invisible – mostly because you didn’t show her
Audrey – cute enough but I’m not sure she will last
Janelle – I think she is my favorite girl – belly dancer too – 1st one. She is sitting tonight out through.

The costumes made the two girls look absolutely identical and I couldn’t tell them apart. They were too shaky for this choreography.

Contemporary: (again)
Matthew – I’m intrigued by him so far.
Dareian – I can’t tell him apart yet but his personality is nice.
Janaya (how do you spell these names – I had to look this up) – she does pull the eyes
Amelia – I sort of predicted this but I don’t know if she will last

Other
Cole – he is gorgeous
Brandon –stepper, should be interesting style
Cyrus – Vegas week made it clear he would be in; I hope he lives up to it.

That was one creative routine that really brought three different styles forward. Fantastic choreography.

30 minutes of just dancing.

Travis’ girl routine. Door to afterlife? Huh. It is a little forgettable.
Sonya’s boy routine Rehearsal without shirts – yay. Boys on boy partnering – oh, yay. Loved it.
Mia’s Top 20 It was nice? I guess.

“Burn Notice” S6E1-3
I love that Madeline can take care of herself “You had to wait for 1” “I had to be sure I shoot the right person.” I am a little bit bored, though, watching this show now. I keep looking at the clock. It’s fine and entertaining and I do love all the characters and cons but it is just getting a little much.

“Legend of Korra” Season 1
First half of the season: I’m really glad the sports part is over because this show just got so much more interesting as it went to a very uncomfortable place of limiting civil liberties to provide security in “When Extremes Meet” episode. Second half of the season was much stronger than the first especially when they were done with the stupid sports. The villain reveal was a little weird since we had no clue earlier – the threats should have been planted earlier like a mention of a brother. Korra going into Avatar state was awesome although the resolution seemed too quick. Overall, I think I like Avatar better but as a sequel, this does hold interest, especially once we get to know the characters more. But I really dislike sports and teenage love angst.

Dawson’s Creek is now on Netflix Instant Queue. I’m ridiculously excited about it. I might not even rewatch it but it holds a special place in my heart. I did rewatch the finale and the pilot and a few scenes along the way. Oh, the drama. And the 90s songs, which makes it very nostalgic.
