Is Gingrich seriously think that if he points out that Romney speaks French it is some sort of bad thing? Wow. That is sad.

An interesting article on teaching kids about gender and how to appreciate the difference in people.

Local College is making all employees to do online sexual harassment seminar and a one on sexual abuse. I think this is partly a response to recent events. A lot of legalese. This online thing also gives very specific legal definitions like when the institution is liable. Mostly this seminar is for institution to avoid liability by ‘education.’ But I think it is useful overall. I’m just glad I can do this online and not attend a class on it. A lot is common sense, like don’t make advances on anyone especially students or others, especially if you are in a power position. No kidding.

I did like some of the questions we had to answer to test our understanding. Basically, it is report everything if there is any problem and be extra cautious. Some examples after a cut.

1. Kate is an administrative assistant in the office of executive administration. Someone has been leaving pornographic pictures and sexually-oriented cartoons in Kate's desk. Kate is very offended by this and has complained to her supervisor. Her supervisor should:
A) Tell Kate there is nothing that can be done at this time, because the pictures have been left anonymously. B) Report the situation to the person(s) in the institution who is to begin investigating the matter immediately. C) Ask Kate why she is so sensitive and possibly refer her for counseling. D) Wait to see if the offender confesses, then discipline accordingly.

I picked the correct answer B.

2. Tom, a department chair, is attracted to Selena, a member of the department’s faculty. Selena is dating Laura, an adjunct faculty member in that same department. Tom knows that Selena is dating Laura. Tom tells Selena that, if she doesn't go to bed with him, he'll take action against Laura. Selena refuses Tom’s advances. Tom, in response, is cordial to Selena, but reports that Laura is helping students cheat on examinations. Tom's claim is untrue. Laura is fired, based on Tom's false statement. Tom has:

A)

Not committed sexual harassment because the institution, not Tom, fired Laura.
B)
Not committed sexual harassment because the law does not recognize sexual harassment by a heterosexual male against a homosexual female.
C)
Not committed sexual harassment because he only asked Selena one time to sleep with him.
D)
Committed sexual harassment.

Really, the answers are too obvious.

Because of Faith's beliefs, she cannot tolerate profanity. Larry is the central office cut-up. One day by the water cooler, Larry told fellow co-workers a joke. As part of the punch line, Larry said several cuss words for emphasis. Faith walked by during the punch line and gave Larry a dirty look. Faith makes a complaint to you about Larry's foul mouth. Faith:

A)

Has a claim for sexual harassment because she is reasonably offended.
B)
Does not have a claim for sexual harassment because Larry is not her supervisor.
C)
Has damaged Larry's reputation, thereby creating a new risk of liability for the institution.
D)
Does not have a claim for sexual harassment, but has a legitimate concern that should be addressed.

Since the joke is not told to her, what is the issue, though? The D is the obvious legal answer here. This was their answer:

D is the best answer. Although Faith is offended, the facts do not indicate that Larry's conduct is so severe and/or pervasive as to give rise to a sexual harassment claim. Profanity may not, in and of itself, have anything to do with gender. Nevertheless, such behavior is disrespectful and can lead to sexual harassment. Tolerance of disrespectful language could be used as evidence that the institution is not concerned about other issues related to respect, including sexual harassment. Larry should be counseled and/or disciplined for his actions. Sexual harassment can be created not only by supervisors, but also by co-workers, vendors, volunteers, or other participants in your campus environment. Faith can report Larry's conduct, without creating liability for damage to his reputation, as long as she tells the truth and only tells those who need to know.

Etc.

The sexual abuse online seminar was a bit boring since it was mostly listening to computer reading aloud what is written on a page- I would rather just read. It would be faster and I would have tuned in to more information, although there was nothing surprising or new. Just how to read the signs and the obligation to report it.

Grimm S1E8 This episode rocked. This series continues just to get better. First of all, Juliette saved Nick. When Nick and Orge were fighting I kept saying about the pot of boiling water in the kitchen, and sure enough, Juliette used it. Second of all, when Nick got hurt it was traumatic for both of them with scars and mental flashbacks, which I appreciate. And he was in the hospital and couldn’t be in on the main action, other than behind the scenes. Third, Monroe and Nick’s relationship continues to get better and better. Implication that Monroe feels so comfortable with Nick in his house that he doesn’t need to put formal attire and Nick knows where coffee is. And many fanfics will rise out of those details. (Although, can’t Nick just say to Hank and he and Monroe are friends – it does happen). And most importantly and significantly, Nick trusted Monroe with the trailer. Cops continue to be competent and they got a female cop too now. And the bad guy was a scary threat. I love this show more and more with every episode.
