Day 3: Your view on drugs and alcohol
I don't really drink much alcohol. If I go out with my friends I might have one cocktail or White Russian (I was born in Belarus so it's funny that I like this drink) or rum (I do like rum a lot). At Passover I might have some Passover wine. I might drink red wine or champagne, again when I go somewhere with friends - which doesn't happen that often. I don't really like beer but hard cider is fine. But I can't drink a lot. After one drink, wine becomes bitter to me. And I don't really see the appeal of being drunk. Once I drank a zombie cocktail and my head got all woozy and I got a bit happy - that's as far as I like being inebriated. But it is a little too similar to vertigo to me and I had lack of balance because of unexplained illness for months seven years ago, so I really don't want to induce that state deliberately. I haven't had a drink in two years because I was pregnant/nursing so I am looking forward to a cocktail on Sept 27 when I go to a birthday party and at a wedding on October 10th. Bear doesn't drink at all - he doesn't like the taste, so we don't really have alcohol in the house. I don't mind when people drink in moderation but I don't find super drunk people interesting. Our wedding was full of alcohol, though, and we gave bottles as party favors - it was a proper Russian wedding to the joy of our guests.
I've never smoked nor have I ever tried any drugs. I don't even like prescription drugs (and Vicodin does nothing for me - I did try it once after oral surgery.). I just never seen the appeal nor wanted to avoid reality. I gave birth without epidural because the idea of a needle in my back was scarier than pain and I really didn't want drugs in my body. So illegal drugs are out of the question. I didn't even try pot when I was in Amsterdam but I had a great time watching friends who did - it was amusing. When I lived in London for study abroad, almost all my roommates smoked pot - but I really don't like to let go of control of my body. What people do with their lives is their business -it is not for me to regulate adults. I do feel sad when I hear of people of who because of drugs. But my opinion on drugs is just for me, really.

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?
Harry Potter - I love writing Remus Lupin. He was my second favorite character (Snape is number 1 for me) and I mostly write him. I just relate to him. I ship Remus/Sirius and it is the pair I write most. I did also like writing Luna Lovegood recently - that was a lot of fun. I kept hearing Evanna Lynch in my head (and so did JK Rowling when she wrote Book 7).
Highlander - I adore Methos and he is just really fun to write and imagine in many situations. He lets my snark out. He is also very adoptable.
Torchwood - I only wrote one story and Ianto is my favorite character on the show, but I enjoyed writing Jack in that one (and I accidentally wrote the Doctor too so that was interesting). That story wrote itself, though.
Bible- I wrote from Vashti's perspective and I had to figure out why she wouldn't obey the king and risk punishment. I do want to write every chapter on the Book of Esther at some point as a story - I think I might do that for Purim next year.
Real Life
My parents are back from Aruba and so my Mom picked Tanya and me up this morning. We will stay with them until this Saturday. Tanya and I had fun at the playground here in the morning - there is a tunnel area and new spaces to run around in.
However, the most exciting news of the morning is about books. Yesterday I got into a conversation on LJ about Tomek books - these are children books by a Polish author that I loved as a child. I read them in Russian when I was about 9-10 years old and they stayed with me. The main character, Tomek, traveled with his father and father's friends all over the world to capture animals for a zoo. The books were full of geography lessons, and talked about explorers and there were a lot of adventures. Every book was set on a different continent or region. I used to put myself in those books - do some early fanfic writing and imagining (without knowing what it was called). So I remember those books and many details quite clearly. I only had the first 7 books of the series (there are 9) since the others were published later. I didn't even know if they were available in Russian. And book 7 ended on a cliffhanger. I still have the first 7 books. My parents shipped them to New York to my uncle along with many other childhood favorites before we immigrated.
After that conversation yesterday, I asked my Dad to check if Book 8 or 9 was available in Russian now (they were never translated into English, most likely because the adults in the books were communists/revolutionaries - the books were set in early 1900s). My Dad is the person to ask about books, especially Russian books. He knows all online sites. And there are! He sent me links and I'm going to download 8 and 9! I can finally see what happens. I might end up disappointed but I don't think that matters. The memory of those books will always be a happy one. I'm very excited.
