Jun. 18th, 2014 07:10 am Saturday - For my birthday every year, I usually pick a Broadway show and Bear gets us tickets. This year I decided on If/Then with Idina Menzel. When I went to see "Wicked" years ago, it was with the original cast but Idina Menzel was out that day. So it was good to finally see her live. I didn't have high expectations for "If/Then" musical but I really, really ended up enjoying it. I liked the story of parallel universes and choices vs fate. The supporting cast was incredible and worked so well, not to mention strong voices and good songs. And the staging was really good too and drew you into the story. So it was certainly a musical worthy of seeing and I'm going to get the soundtrack at some point.
We went to see a matinee show, so we were back home by 6, but since we were leaving for Bear's parents' house, I really didn't want to cook. So we got Chinese food. We brought it home and ate of our new fancy plates that my parents got us last year but just now finally brought over and arranged. Then we went to Long Island to spent Bear's birthday/Father's Day with his family.
Annie, one of Bear's relatives, who lives in Las Vegas now, sent us some baby clothes - all pink, of course. But cute. I just wish there was the end of baby color coding. And I got my last birthday present from Bear's parents: a collection of classic sci-fi stories from 1929-1960.
Sunday - A very nice day in Long Island for Bear's birthday party/father's day; I gave Bear his presents early in the morning - I got him a wrestling DVD, a video game, a book by Oliver Sacks, a book of classic piano for beginners and nun-chucks he wanted. In the afternoon, we went to get him a haircut and then went to Home Depot. There was a party in the evening with lots of food and Bear's sister came with her boyfriend and then, unexpectedly, since they were coming home from travel, Bear's brother and his girlfriend could make it too. So everyone was there for a nice party. There was a very terrible traffic on the way home - we waited until pretty late to head out but still didn't get home until midnight - double the time it usually takes. But at least it was a nice day.
Monday - My Mom had a doctor's appointment today in Brooklyn, so she came over early in the morning and was driving me crazy. I get that the appointment was making her anxious and she tends to convert her bad mood into picking on everyone and being generally critical and unpleasant but she was really making me stressed. Usually, I don't pay attention when she gets like this but it was really hard not to. We also had to deal with our incompetent super - the faucet in the bathroom was leaking a bit and, after a week, he finally came to deal with it but he didn't really fix anything - it is still leaking. I wish the substitute super from last summer was still here - that guy actually got some work done. ]
I did go shopping for fruit with my Mom in the mid-morning and did some cooking in the evening - cauliflower casserole and some steak but mostly I spent the day finishing latest Dresden Files book. I really don't like the villain in the book so I wasn't looking forward to this installment that much but I really ended up enjoying Skin Game and all its developments.
Tuesday - it is starting to get really hot, although I did manage to get off the couch and go for a walk in the evening. My main accomplishment today was making split pea soup. Staying home all the time again is starting to get to me. I need to make a better schedule for myself to be more productive and read and write more.
