Oct. 1st, 2010 11:00 pmI couldn’t sleep that much again. Partly because it was really, really raining. Heavy, loud rain and high wind beating at the windows. The whole day was pretty gray and depressing with bouts of rain.
I graded some papers, printed out the outlines exercise for my students and tried not to nap in the rainy weather. Classes were ok, my first class was much more into the stuff I gave them to do. Both classes finished ten minutes early, thought. I really didn’t have extra stuff for them to do, so I let them go early (not that they didn’t rejoice).
I got a chicken parmesan sandwich for lunch and met another instructor in the office and it was actually fun to interact with someone – I really do miss the communal offices downstairs that we had last year. The guy is retired and teaches technical writing part time because he liked it and translates German radio plays for fun.
I had a student actually show up for office hours; he needed to learn grammar. How does one make it to college and not know what an independent clause is (or dependent one)? The kid wants to be a lawyer and he has a personality for it but he really needs to drop the attitude that he knows better and that he can skate on just charm. He is amusing to talk too.
Something I noticed this year: the students are having trouble calling me by just my first name (which I allow in the writing classes, since it is easier to pronounce and the classes are smaller. I never allowed it in history classes). They usually go with ‘Miss’ or with “Professor.” I guess I gotten old enough that they feel weird using just the first name even if they have permission.
I had to get a new school ID card and I was surprised that it was actually pretty easy. I was expecting a run-around or some more bureaucracy.
As I went for a walk after I got home, in the setting sun, one of the trees was glowing red. The weather was also chilly enough to really make apparent that it is not autumn. I do like October, I never used to as a child. But I love the change in seasons, the crispiness of air and my fall jackets. But how did it get to be October already?
I have no words for some things in this world . I feel really sad for everyone involved in this situation. A boy jumps off a bridge because some kids really have no idea of privacy or any kind of sound judgment anymore.
