We had to get up really early today to catch train/ferry/subway to go to the Belarusian consulate to get a visa for our trip in May. The trip into the city actually went really smoothly and pretty fast. And we were in and out of the consulate in 15 minutes as there were no lines. They said it would take about a week. Overall, a painless process. Now if the Russian visa would be like that too. (I’m still bitter that we have to get a Russian transit visa just because we are spending three hours in Moscow to change planes. But since we are going from one terminal to another we will need to shell out the same amount of money as a regular visa.) We’ll see next week.

The weather was just wonderful all day, all warm and sunny so we decided to enjoy the city a bit. We stopped up a souvenir store to get some NY gifts and I had to resist buying a yellow rubber ducky with statue of liberty hat. I sort of collect the duckies – I have one from Kennedy Space Center in a space shuttle and one in a bathing suit from Montauk vacation. But this one was a bit too expensive, I’ll get it later, maybe.

As we stopped by the Rockefeller Center, we noticed that there weren’t that many people ice-skating in the rink. I never ice skated in that rink before in all the seventeen years in New York and since it is March, the prices are actually reasonable. After some thinking, Mama and I just decided to go for it. It was even cheaper than we thought, since there was a lunch hour discount so we only spent $26 for two people with skate rental. You could skate from 90 minutes but we only did 40 minutes. That was enough. But that was so much fun. I have much better control of the ice skates from all my rollerblading for last few summers, so I was able to go pretty fast sometimes. And they had fun music on too. Papa, who can’t skate at all, was just watching us. The weather, the atmosphere and just being in the city just made me happy to be there even if my legs were annoyed at me after lack of exercise since the summer.

After the ice skating we make our way to Columbus Circle to get some lunch and on the way I had a geeky sighting. Now, in all my time in New York I only had maybe one more random sighting but this was definitely cool. As we were walking on 59th street across Central Park we passed Enver Gjokaj (or his twin, possibly) walking and talking animatedly to someone. As we passed him (or someone who looks just like him, and I just choose to believe it was him) I turned in disbelief and Papa had the same expression as me. (He watched “Dollhouse” with me, so he is a fan too.) Just such a perfect geeky moment for me.

I had Indian for lunch and then Mama was tired so we went home. I sat in front on the top level of the ferry and it was just nice to look out at water glittering in the sunshine and just feel the peace from a pretty awesome day. Of course, by the time we got home, since a took a while, I was just very tired and just wanted a nap.

In the last four days we just have the greatest weather. Which of course means next week will be rainy and miserable. But today was just a wonderful day.
