Feb. 22nd, 2010 11:55 pmIce dancing- free dance. Much better to watch than the original dance round, mostly because of much better music. And I agree to the judging here. Top three so far for every skating event has been in the proper order for me.
British sibling team Kerr/Kerr were great to watch on this part. They performed to Linkin Park and had characters (yes, derivative characters, she as his savior, but still story!) and interesting moves like when she lifted him. Definitely better then sibling tango and cowboy dance.
“Requiem for a Dream”, while overplayed at these events is a really nice piece of music. (it reminds me of Dr Who for some reason, even as it should probably make me want to rewatch Lord of the Rings) I’m so going to get it on iTunes. France’s ‘clock’ routine was certainly different.
I enjoyed the firebird dance by the second Russian team, again because it had a sort of story, and her firebird costume is pretty and is what I associate with ice dancing.
“Phantom of the Opera” music should be banned, especially versions with actual singing. I love the actual musical – but I don’t like it being appropriated as ‘romantic’ music. The story is creepy for a reason and Christine is not supposed to end up with her stalker, unlike dances and stakes to this music might suggest. The use of this music makes me want to roll my eyes. Davis/White stake was very good and I enjoyed their skating skills and really fast crazy lifts but the music just took me out of it.
Virtue/Moir skate was beautiful. She was just so graceful and they worked really well together. They had my favorite skate of the night and I was very happy they got gold on their home soil. Very very pretty. And good lifts that added to the dance but did not overwhelm it; they were very much part of the program.
Belbin and Agosto were boring too me and their skating quality was not that good. I don’t understand many comments on forums that wanted to put them in third (I think that was more against the Russian team then for the American team). Their program was ok but I was falling asleep on it. Hey, they had a silver medal in Torino, so they had their career high, at least.
After looking at the TWoP forums I was also bewildered by the seemingly unanimous popular opinion that the Russian team did not belong on that podium. I think that was the reaction to the original dance still, and that colored many opinions. I enjoyed their skate, in particular Domnina – she just commands attention and her lines are beautiful. I think they deserved the third place for their compulsory tango alone. Again, maybe the forum consensus was because everyone else wanted a North American sweep that there is so much negative talk there – but I really liked the free skate and I think they deserved that bronze especially coming off an injury that didn’t allow for much practice this season. I was rooting for them. To me the top four deserved to be in that order.
What I really didn’t like was the ice-skating commentators on NBC. They have such a prevalent bias for North American teams. They were talking of North American sweep in the beginning of the program as if it already happened. They guy, especially, was really annoying me. I get the desire to root for a home team or your country team but could they pretend to be a bit unbiased.
Stephen Colbert's Olympic coverage is super awesome.
