Happy New Year!

The baby blanket cross-stitch quilt came in the mail today – right in time to start it in the new year. I’m very excited about it. I don’t usually do stamped cross stitch, I prefer counted cross stitch because that feels more like drawing, but I like the idea of this blanket and the design.

It wasn’t the most terrible year and I don’t like to dwell on bad things but the worst thing about 2010 was Papa’s thyroid cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, he is fine and all he has to do now is take hormones but the summer was nerve wracking anyway. I’m very glad to leave this behind in the year that passed. I also went to a funeral this year – Yeva’s grandfather. May he rest in peace. Let all the bad things about the year stay in it.

2010 did have many good things too: I turned 30 and was able to celebrate it with my whole family in Belarus; I took three trips, one with family, one with friends and one with just Bear – Minsk, New Hampshire, and Montauk. Healthwise I finally feel like a mostly normal person, finally after two years, since I got used to my palpitations and could teach a whole class without feeling weak although now my bladder wants to play but I’d rather deal with that than with my heart. I discovered that I love reading National Geographic, I wrote some fanfic I liked, there was rollerblading, I did fun cross stitch projects and I went to an aquarium. I’m grateful for all our girl dinner gatherings and other get-togethers like seeing “Sex and the City” with Yeva, “Eat, Pray, Love” with the girls and our Passover Seder at Marianna’s. I was really happy to go to the “The Daily Show” with Medusa in May, and attend two operas, one ballet, one musical and one play and also to see Neil Gaiman at New Yorker festival. I liked free museum day and watching the Winter Olympics. Work wise, I loved teaching this year – it was a good group of students. On TV front, I really enjoyed “Caprica,” “True Blood,” “Community,” and especially “Highlander” which I watched for the first time and discovered a great number of great fanfiction. In the movies, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” and “Toy Story 3” were wonderful. My favorite books of the year include “Riverworld, ”“Neverwhere,” “American Gods,” “Changes,” and Stephen Fry autobiography. I thankful for my family, friends and I’m glad I met very interesting people online.

The day went by really fast. I cleaned my room some more and got ready. I did do some work too. We always get dressed up for New Years – not always fancy, but nice. So I put on shiny earrings and even some make-up and my beige sweater. We always take photographs on New Year’s Eve before we eat in front of the tree. Since I was little, we always took pictures on New Years, my uncle had a camera and a dark room. I think I have a picture for every year of my life. Bear was stuck in traffic a little, so we did some pictures on our own until he arrived and then he joined in.

We had our holiday dinner on fancy tablecloths with nice china. Mama made very many delicious things including olivie salad, tongue, chicken and fried potatoes. And there was cake later on in the evening. I was stuffed.

After dinner and before the midnight TV watching, Bear and I first finished 1981 “Clash of the Titans” which continued to be cheesy fun and then joined my parents to watch the rest of “Toy Story 3” that they were watching. The garbage/fire scene was still very intense and the end still made me chocked up. Then we had some time before midnight so I put on “Doctor Who” latest Christmas special on again for Bear to see.

The clock counted down, and it was fun to see the crowds on TV but I really could not believe that it was already a new year.

Instead of doing resolutions for the whole year, which never work, I’m doing resolutions for a month to see how that will go. And I will keep them small. So my January resolutions:

1. 30 minutes of exercise of any kind a day – walking, elliptical, wii, weights –, just something
2. no internet until 6pm unless for work
3. publish a fanfiction story for January (I actually already wrote it, I just need to beta it)
4. cross stitch a little every day
