If you are interested in Global History and also want a general overview you might want to get this textbook as well:
Stearns, Peter et al "World Civilizations: The Global Experience, Volume 1: Beginnings to 1750. (5th edition)
It is affordable used and I love this textbook. It provides good time lines and maps. While I'm not assigning this to my students this semester, I will use it to figure out my class and for some of my lectures.
