On Friday, I went to see “Les Miserables” with Yeva. I walked over to her place and we drove to get tickets and then we had about 30 minutes to get desert. That desert place is so delicious. Yeva’s new boyfriend Sergey joined us for the movie. He wasn’t really interested in the movie, he just came along to spend time with her (ah, new relationships!) and it was also the first time I got to meet him. They are getting a bit serious now - I’m just very glad to hear Yeva so happy again. Her break up seven month ago was really hard on her. But when she called me right after the New Year to recount their recent trip to Vegas, she sounded like herself again. Of course, I’m hoping for dinner soon so we could met Sergey properly, with conversation.

Maybe about half way through the movie I knew that I will be buying this on DVD and that I would use my Barnes and Noble gift card to buy the soundtrack. This movie was perfect. Just perfect. I loved it so much. I want to see it again – it will not be technically possible and I’d rather use that $13.50 to buy the movie later – but I just wish I could see it again. Two days later, it is still in my head.

Now, I don’t have perfect musical hearing. I’m not tone deaf or anything, but in music class I would always put a note about half tone of where it is supposed to be. So, as much as many people were bothered that the songs were not always sung perfectly, that didn’t bother me in the slightest. I loved the acting of the songs, and the acting was wonderful. Even Russell Crowe, whom I don’t generally like and only liked in a couple of movies, like “The Insider”, and who was panned by many, turned in a performance I enjoyed because I think he did capture Javert and his nature. I do love Javert since I understand him – he is not a two dimensional villain – he is not even a villain, he is a guy doing his job with specific principles who can’t handle it when those principles are broken – and I felt that in his two solos.

“Les Miserables” is the first musical I’ve ever seen. I used my prom money when I was eighteen and went to see it on Broadway with my parents. (I really didn’t want to go to prom). And I bought the tape of it. (I wish I had a CD, so I could download it to my iPod – that cast recording is expensive though, so I’m going to get the movie soundtrack.) So I know all the songs very well. I was mouthing the words for most of the songs – which contributed to my enjoyment. My favorite and unexpected song, that still sticks in my head, was “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.” I never really thought much of this song before but the staging and the singing just stab at your heart. I so wish I could watch this movie again.

I also spent the first week of the new year, finishing the 14th book of the Dresden Files, “Cold Days” by Jim Butcher.

I liked the book. The plot moved along nicely. I liked some hints of what is to come, although I needed a Wikipedia summary pages to catch Odin’ reference to mantles and Halloween. The main plot of the series with Outsiders is much more explicit now, which is great – it really feels like the mythology is moving along. Murphy and Harry have earned their relationship – they should stop stalling on it – but I’m happy with their continued conversations. I really cringe at any hint of Harry and Molly, mostly because I’m a teacher and that kind of dynamic is icky. So I liked Harry’s acknowledgment of that (Murphy, I think is just using potentiality of Molly as a excuse).

Downton Abbey S3E1 (US) It’s two UK episodes, really. I watched it this morning online. I’ve never really been a giant fan of Mary and Matthew but their proposal last year made me mushy and the wedding scenes were actually making me cry. Loved the wedding. When both Mary’s father and Mr. Carson were just looking in Mary in the dress - aw. Good job, show. I really liked these two episodes – I thought it was all on point. Both Mary and Matthew need to get over themselves in regards to money. So I’m excited for the season in general.

Tomorrow, Bear and I are going on our real delayed honeymoon. We just going on vacation really. We are going to Arizona to Grand Canyon. I’ve never been to a desert environment so I don’t really know what to expect. Pictures and TV and movies are not same and I’m looking forward to seeing it live. I did decide to have an internet break. I will put pictures up when I come back.
