It is my Grandfather’s birthday today – he is 84! I made sure to call him to wish him a happy birthday. Bear and I were supposed to drive to Brooklyn with presents today (I got him the Russian version of “Girl with Dragon Tattoo” and Papa got him a book and a cd; my grandfather, like my father and I, is a big reader) but because Bear had to go home this morning, I would have to wait until this weekend when Papa will get back from his vacation. But that’s ok, that will be fun too and we will do a gift exchange.

I finished “Catching Fire” today.

I can’t think of this book as a separate book from “Hunger Games” – especially since I’m reading the whole trilogy all together. I do really like that I really could not tell where this book was going – from the beginning with the Victory Tour to the end with the Games and the rescue – it was definitely a ride. Good twists coming. Again there was some information I caught on before Katniss did like water in trees and some came as a surprise. But it was certainly entertaining in a horrific way. In this book, just when you think things can’t get any worse – they do. I really did not expect the Quell twist at all. I do like the characters and the realism and I love Peeta – he is awesome. Gale, at this point, is the only one who is not really a real character to me, he is more an object (Prim is like that a little too). I don’t get a clear sense of who he is. But usually in stories girls are written like that – a potential love interest at home, so I appreciate the reversal here. I’m a little weary of starting “Mockingjay” right away because this book ended on such a depressing note but I will probably start it tonight anyway

I hope your Grandfather has a wonderful birthday!

Re: Catching Fire - Like you, I can't really think of the books separately...they just blend together into one seamless story when read together like that. (Not that I mind.)

And oh, the twists! Some of those I did not see coming, but it kept things interesting. I really couldn't believe Katniss would have to participate in The Games again after what an ordeal it was for her to survive the first time. I really expected she would be "safe", but when it was clear she wouldn't be, it really served to ratchet up the tension.

I agree about Gale not seeming quite real. I guess if we had seen more of their relationshilp and had more dialogue between them instead of just being told they are close, it would have felt more substantial.

Mockingjay is rather grim, but it's a satisfying conclusion to the series, IMHO.
