And oh, the twists! Some of those I did not see coming, but it kept things interesting. I really couldn't believe Katniss would have to participate in The Games again after what an ordeal it was for her to survive the first time. I really expected she would be "safe", but when it was clear she wouldn't be, it really served to ratchet up the tension.
I agree about Gale not seeming quite real. I guess if we had seen more of their relationshilp and had more dialogue between them instead of just being told they are close, it would have felt more substantial.
Mockingjayis rather grim, but it's a satisfying conclusion to the series, IMHO.
