Bear had to go in to work for half a day and I didn’t want to just sit in his house even if I had work to do too, so I went with him. I couldn’t sit in his office, obviously, but there were couches in the main building and actually a nice bench outside where I sat and finished “Gilgamesh”.
I really really like this edition by Stephen Mitchell. His introduction shows his political views (he really equated Gilgamesh going to fight Humbaba to US invasion of Iraq), but he has an interesting breakdown of the story and character motivations and his version is very readable and flows well. I enjoyed the story. Now I have to think up of a paper question for students and if I want to pair it with any other reading.
After his shift, Bear went to work out and I didn’t have workout clothes of any kind with me so instead I had lunch that Bear made me that morning (he makes excellent sandwiches) at a picnic table in the sunshine while reading National Geographic. I finished the July issue, finally. I liked the article on the diversity of food. It is scary to read that we lost almost 90% of variety of our crops because of monoculture.
In the afternoon, we went for a drive and then went to Northport and walked around the marina and main street there. I got raspberry swirl ice cream while Bear had an Italian ice. My favorite boat name this time was ‘Unbalanced’. (We like to check out boat names to see if there any fun ones).
After dinner, we watched “Fast and Furious” since I got that in his library the day before. I do like movies that I don’t have to take seriously sometimes.
