Day 25: A problem that you have had

This question is a little strange. What kind of problem? Personal, work? Right now the biggest problem is getting Tanya to eat stuff before she starts rejecting it and throwing food on the floor. Or getting enough time to grade papers.

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

If the story is inspired by a song or a piece of music I listen to it as I write to get the mood and the feel of the story. And as I think about the story. But otherwise I don't listen to anything as I write. Nor do I make a playlist for a story or mood. I don't need noise. Too much noise would be distracting. I do prefer it generally quiet but not overly so.

Saturday

I had really busy last few days. I had to grade a lot for work on top of attending two events, so I'm just getting back to blogging and my computer in general.

On Saturday afternoon Bear and I went to a wedding. His best friend Jeremy and his now wife Fran were together for the last 10 years and engaged for the last 5. They live together and neither was really in a hurry to sign the paperwork nor did they want a big thing where they spent a lot of money. Finally, the legal advantages of marriage and their family convinced them to just get the license and have a small party for family.

They got quietly married by themselves with one witness on Saturday morning and then had their reception at 2pm in the greenhouse in the back of a Mexican restaurant they really liked. There were maybe 25 to 30 guests. The weather was sunny and gorgeous and the greenhouse was a very lovely setting.

There was good food and sangrias and a lot of relaxing and hanging out. It was exactly what they wanted without a big fuss. The bride did wear a lovely white lacy dress but it was not a "wedding dress" per se. And the groom always said he wanted to get married in flip flops.

My parents were watching Tanya and Bear and I left a little early since he wanted to stop by the Spirit of Halloween store to get a Ball & Chain as a gag gift (it was a big hit). We also like to go to that store around October to look at all the masks (although all the 'sexy' women costumes just generally make me mad. Like there is one normal cop costume for a guy but 5 different "dirty cop" "sexy cop" costumes for women, and none a normal uniform). So we had a little fun even if that made us a little late with the traffic. (I also got Bear a fake machete with fake blood on it for his Jason costume. He has several ready costumes - Batman, Darth Vader, Freddy, Mike Meyers, ghostface and now Jason. He loves Halloween. I just stick to my witch costume with big pointy hat and my graduation gown.)

I also gave the newlyweds a cross stitch I made of a lighthouse, which turned out very appropriate since they are going to Montauk for their honeymoon. We did give them a card with a check too, but I wanted to give them something special.

We got home by 7:30 and bedtime, but it was a very nice date and a very nice wedding.

Sunday

On Sunday we drove to a playground in Manhattan for a small party for a 2 year old. This party was supposed to be last Saturday but got postponed because of rain. (which was not good timing because of my big work thing today - Monday - and all the grading I had to do, but I managed). The traffic to get there was pretty terrible - that tunnel was never that slow - but it gave Tanya extra time to nap. The party itself just was a few couples with their small kids. Mostly it was pizza and baby cupcakes and Tanya running around the playground.

I bought a book of Russian children poems by Chukovskiy and little Cheburashka and Crocodile Gena (characters from a cartoon) toys as presents. When we visited Janna and Jo a few months ago, Tanya brought over her Cheburashka and Gena (she since lost the Cheburashka) and Jo was in thrall with them. Apparently, just before the party when Janna mentioned to Jo that Tanya was coming, Jo said "Tanya, Gena, Cheburashka" in one breath. She remembered even after a few months that one afternoon. So my gift was very fortunate.

I was so tired by the evening, that I fell asleep at 9:30 despite wanting to stay up to grade some more. I did wake up at 3:30am feeling refreshed but made myself sleep some more until 6. I've been in this state of not quite being sick but feeling like I can get sick at any moment since October started, so I'm just waiting for it to catch up with me.

Monday

I was grading since I got on the train at 6:30am, through office hours and though class. I was giving the first part of the midterm today so class time was all grading papers. I had a meeting with the director at 2pm for the mid term review. I just needed to get all the grading done before then and this weekend was quite busy. I was feeling sick most of the morning - just wooly head and tiredness - but it could be from a lot of grading.

Review itself is not as stressful after so many years. They check on us that we are grading correctly and that we are giving good paper comments and if we need to discuss a specific student. But I'm pretty good at grading correctly by now and the directors know it - they trust me to do my job well - so I mostly use the meeting to discuss papers where the grade is in between two grades and I want to make sure I'm not being either too harsh or too nice. It's really nice to get feedback and my current director always advocates for the students, which I find very good and useful. It went really well and I was done earlier than I thought and I was back home (well, the playground) by 5pm.

And now I can watch something on Netflix or read a bit.
